'Bachelorette' instant reaction: Wrestling with some bad news

Filed under: Reality TV, TV and tagged: ,

Ali began the episode by chirping to the camera, “I don’t think anything could go wrong at this point!” Which meant only one thing: Most. Dramatic. First 20 Minutes or So. Of The Bachelorette. Ever. It came as no surprise that some serious Justin stuff went down — we could tell that much from the teasers — but how it all went down was pretty much the reason we watch reality TV. You never know what’s going to happen (or who’s going to show up, or where producers will have cameras, or what audio tapes will be played, or how many places one can walk on hotel grounds to try to escape from cameras and accusations).

After all that, the rest of the trip to Turkey had a lot to live up to. And much of it didn’t, though there were plenty of hints of trouble to come. Ty put in a fairly typical date’s work — with one red-flag revelation. Frank continued his now-standard whining about having to share Ali with other guys while on a show that’s about her dating him and a bunch of other guys — while also making veiled references to never being “100 percent sure” about romantic choices. The group date involved olive-oil wrestling, which is really quite something, I must admit.

The full recap with all the specifics, including much more discussion of the Canadian phone call heard round the world, will be up soon (UPDATE: Click the link to read Jennifer Armstrong’s full Bachelorette recap), but if you’ve already watched and want to weigh in on Justin’s level of jerkdom or Chris’ recipe for grilled asparagus, read on after the jump for more. [SPOILER ALERT: Read on only if you've already watched Monday's Bachelorette. Seriously.]

New 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows' trailer debuts. Goosebumple overdose in progress.

I’m finding it difficult to type, Popwatchers, because I’ve just watched the first full trailer for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and my entire body is currently riddled with goosebumples. Before I apparate you over the jump so y’all can watch the trailer and discover for yourself the sensation of a goosebumple overdose, a word of warning: The opening of this trailer includes an iconic and surprising moment between Harry and Voldemort in the Forbidden Forest. Those of you who’ve read the final Harry Potter book know exactly which scene I’m talking about, but those of you who haven’t — those of you who’ve only consumed Harry Potter as a cinematic experience, and not a literary one — may find this scene to be a big honking spoiler. Indeed, pretty much all of the footage ahead, and my thoughts on it, aren’t for those who prefer to see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows with virgin eyes. For the rest of you: Accio goosebumples! Exclusive: Eminem, Christina Aguilera among guests for 'Entourage' season finale

Filed under: News, Television, TV and tagged: , ,

Eminem-XtinaImage Credit: Frank Micelotta/Getty Images; Steve Granitz/WireImage.com Here’s some news that will be music to Entourage fans’ ears: Eminem and Christina Aguilera are among the guest stars appearing in the HBO comedy’s season 7 finale, EW.com has learned. The rapper, who released Recovery last week, shot a scene that takes place “at a platinum record party for his album, which by the time this airs will be platinum, I’m sure,” says Entourage creator Doug Ellin, adding: “He has a little conflict—a little beef—with Vince [Adrian Grenier].” While Eminem won’t be performing in the episode, Aguilera will. Like Eminem, the singer plays herself—but she’s also a client of Ari. “She’s doing Ari a favor and performing at a party for him,” Ellin tells EW.com. The Sept. 12 episode, which Ellin hints is a “pretty dramatic season finale,” also features Minka Kelly (whom Vince has his eye on) and John Cleese, as well as pro athletes such as Super Bowl MVP Drew Brees, Phillies All-Star first baseman Ryan Howard, and NBA players Jordan Farmar and Kevin Love.

'Pawn Stars': Rick Harrison talks about cable's most unlikely hit!

Filed under: Reality TV, TV and tagged: ,

Pawn-Stars-RichImage Credit: Joey L/History ChannelIf you’ve never seen The History Channel’s Pawn Stars, you are seriously missing out. Much like an actual pawn shop, this good-natured reality show — which airs Monday nights at 10 p.m. ET — has a little bit of everything: unbelievable objects, absurd stories, ridiculous family banter, and surprise fortunes. Viewers can’t get enough of the cable smash, which is reaching ratings heights that almost any network would be willing to trade for. We got the chance to speak with shop-owner Rick Harrison, the man-in-charge on Pawn Stars, about the success of the show, his old man’s work ethic, honesty in the pawn business, and a whole lot more.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: How did the show come about?
RICK HARRISON:
I was pitching the show for four years, and nothing ever came of it. Out of the blue, Leftfield Pictures calls me up and says, “Hey, we’re thinking about trying to do a reality show in a pawn shop.” I said, “Oh, really? I’ve been trying to get this thing going for four years!” It was really refreshing. They were from New York. They weren’t from Hollywood. They were really business-minded, from the first call with them to being on the air for six months, and from there, the ratings just kept on going up. READ FULL STORY »

Forbes power list: Women on top

Lady-GagaImage Credit: Rob Verhorst/Redferns/Getty ImagesMemo to Angelina Jolie: Charity work doesn’t make you powerful. That seems to be the message from today’s announcement of Forbes magazine’s annual celebrity power list, where women may have claimed three of the top five slots, but Jolie, last year’s top-ranked star, fell to No. 18. (Though Jolie has been keeping relatively busy filming projects like Salt and The Tourist, she hasn’t actually had a film in theaters since 2008.) Rather, this year’s top five were (in order) Oprah Winfrey, Beyoncé, James Cameron, Lady Gaga, and Tiger Woods, a lineup determined by income and media presence. Elsewhere on the list, Robert Pattinson (No. 50) outranked James Patterson (No. 53), Alec Baldwin (No. 88) edged out Tina Fey (No. 90), and — since I know you all were wondering — Justin Bieber was nowhere to be found.

'X-Men: First Class': Alice Eve in talks to play the White Queen

emma-frostImage Credit: Ethan Miller/Getty Images; Marvel EntertainmentX-Men: First Class confuses me. I’m excited for it, of course. (With Kick-Ass director Matthew Vaughn at the helm, how could you not be?) I guess I’m just more surprised that the movie was greenlit at all. It’s an X-Men movie, but there’s no Wolverine, and the two most important roles have been recast with considerably younger actors. Also, First Class is simultaneously a prequel and a reboot (preboot?). That’s a rough mixture to pull off, though the results can be incredible.

So far, every piece of news has left me dizzy with anticipation. I’m stoked to see James McAvoy play a young Professor X, I know Michael Fassbender will be great as young Magneto, and I like everything that the movie’s four credited screenwriters have worked on. Now, we’ve got some more advance news to add to the pile. According to The Hollywood Reporter‘s Heat Vision Blog, She’s Out Of Your League‘s Alice Eve is currently negotiating to star as the White Queen, the blonde British bombshell with a penchant for instigating telepathic melodrama. 'Make It or Break It' returns tonight, just in time to stick some landings

Filed under: TV and tagged:

make-it-or-break-itImage Credit: Bob D'Amico/ABC FamilyI know that Make It Or Break It isn’t an Emmy-worthy show: It can be as hokey as 7th Heaven. And yet…I totally love it and am ridiculously excited for its second-season premiere tonight. Gymnastics drama for everyone! Yay!

It helps I guess that I was into gymnastics as a kid. (True story: I got an e-mail a few months ago from my dad that just said “Today is Shannon Miller’s birthday!” I was a really big fan of hers.) But the bigger draw is that the show has distilled teen dramas into their most concentrated form: There’s the once and future heroine, the villain (with hairdos so perfect Blair Waldorf would weep), the one from the wrong side of the tracks, the champion with the secret. There’s the good parents, the bad parents, the poor parents, and the cheater parents; the fought-over guy, the emo guy, the inappropriately hot coach, and the disgraced former coach who now heads up a rival squad. It’s every old-school 90210 premise jammed into one magnificent leotard, and I love it like Brenda Walsh loves heavy bangs and high-waisted jeans: too much for my own good.

Admit it, PopWatchers: You’re as excited as I am to see the fall-out between Kaylie and Lauren, right? Can Summer and Sasha get together for reals already?

'Prison Break' alum Wentworth Miller's screenplay in development. It's a good week for brainy hotties.

wentworth-millerImage Credit: Chen He/ChinaFotoPress/Getty ImagesComing off the heels of James Franco’s turn as an artist, Wentworth Miller’s passion project Stoker has caught the eye of Fox Searchlight. Carey Mulligan is reportedly attached to the project, and Jodie Foster is in talks. (Mulligan’s rep didn’t respond to EW’s request for confirmation.)

Little known fact — for those of you who haven’t cyberstalked the actor since his Prison Break days — this is a project Miller has been chatting about for a while. Back in 2008, the Princeton grad spoke about the project in an interview, saying, “It’s kind of love story with a Hitchcock twist. …It’s not about vampires at least with the teeth and the desire to suck your blood, but it is a thriller and it is about an individual who preys on the innocent.”

Great news, I say! Not only because the story seems well thought out, but also because I love seeing bankable faces take a step behind the scenes — even if it means we get less of them. When an actor feels like they have something greater to contribute to the creative process (be it writing, directing, or otherwise), it shows substance, which is really one of the most attractive things of all. Agree?

'Pretty Little Liars' gets 12 more episodes: Yay for Lucy Hale (and Holly Marie Combs)!

Filed under: News, Television, TV and tagged: ,

pretty-little-liarsImage Credit: Danny Feld/ABC FamilyIt’s days like these that make me ever-so-optimistic, PopWatchers. Because today, ABC Family announced it has picked up 12 additional episodes of Pretty Little Liars, the network’s Gossip Girl-esque mystery starring PopWatch favorite Lucy Hale and Kate Ward favorite Holly Marie Combs. (This Charmed obsession just won’t quit!)

Are there two actors more deserving of some small-screen success after Hale coped with cancellation (R.I.P. Privileged), and Combs coped with, well, post-Charmed TV movies and general nothingness? Well, maybe Joanna Garcia and Brian Krause, but I’m still happy that PLL has managed to stake a place on ABC Family, kicking off its first season with the network’s highest debut ever in adults 18-34. Plus, I’m just happy to hear PLL won’t be going all Reunion on us before it rounds out its Alison mystery.

Who else is pumped? And I suppose Chad Lowe deserves three cheers too, no?

PopWatch Confessional: Your most dysfunctional obsession?

dysfunctional-obsessionsImage Credit: Kevin Mazur/WireImage.com; Everett CollectionThere’s an interesting piece in the L.A. Times today (“When Twilight fandom becomes addiction”) that concludes by asking if being a Twihard is necessarily anymore dysfunctional than being a sports fanatic. It’s a fair question. And one that you can expand to include whatever current (or recurring) pop culture addiction is disrupting your life. I say this as someone who spent a good two hours last night reading Jon Bon Jovi fan fiction (and occasionally faux-sobbing “I’m reading Jon Bon Jovi fan fiction” aloud, to herself, in acknowledgment of the shame spiral), because I’ve become equally obsessed with Jon and his effect on women since seeing my first Bon Jovi stadium show earlier this summer. I’ve polled a few other brave PopWatch bloggers on their most dysfunctional obsessions. What’s yours? No judgment! READ FULL STORY »
