Tony Awards 2010: Green Day is everywhere, Jay-Z is nowhere, and Catherine Zeta-Jones gets 'crass'

Green-DayImage Credit: Kevin Mazur/Wireimage.comIf you watched the 2010 Tony Awards—and that’s a very big if, considering it was the night of the True Blood premiere and game 5 of the NBA finals—you probably saw a few strange things: Host Sean Hayes tonguing Kristin Chenoweth, Green Day playing a mini-concert, and Oscar winners Denzel Washington and Catherine Zeta-Jones making off with two of the four major acting awards. The night’s biggest winner was, uncharacteristically, a play: the Mark Rothko homage Red, which took home six awards including Best Play. Memphis—featuring music by Bon Jovi’s David Bryan—won Best Musical. Below, a few more moments from Tony night 2010:

Green Day night: So, let’s tally it up here: American Idiot had four musical numbers. Four: three in the opening number (one from the cast, and two from Green Day), then the show’s official Best Musical performance later in the telecast. That’s more awards than it got (it won best sets and lighting). Heck, that’s more nominations than it got. Think the other best musical nominees were ticked off? READ FULL STORY »

Syfy renews 'Ghost Hunters' for seventh season

ghost-huntersImage Credit: Andrei Jackamets/SyfyEven though I can’t stand typing “Syfy” and pretending it’s a viable word, you should know that the network has renewed its flagship series Ghost Hunters for a seventh season. Twenty-five new episodes, nerds! Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson will resume their roles as the leaders of TAPS (The Atlantic Paranormal Society). Don’t just sit around waiting for the luxurious grip of Death to massage your shoulder at dusk — call them today!

After the jump, watch a YouTube compilation of all the best evidences of ghosts caught on tape, paying close attention to the moment at 0:37 when a strategically placed floral print hotel room chair makes it seem like Grant Wilson is wearing a lovely skirt. READ FULL STORY »

England's World Cup blunder: Which obvious sports mistakes would make great movie scenes?

Most Americans don’t care about soccer, but every American cares about defeating the English. So far, we’ve got an unimpeachable track record on the latter: the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Miracle on the Grass of 1950, and maybe their rock ‘n roll is better than ours, but our hip-hop is much better than theirs. Our national winning streak was tested on Saturday, when the USA faced England in the opening round of the World Cup. Things looked grim for our boys…until English goalkeeper Robert Green let in an easy goal. Watch the blunder here: if you freeze-frame, you can actually pinpoint the second when his heart rips in half.

The final score was 1-1, which counts as a practical win for the U.S. thanks to the bizarre arithmetic of soccer tournaments. This got me thinking: READ FULL STORY »

'Rubicon': Cracking the code

rubiconImage Credit: AMCLast night’s Rubicon felt like a test of TV knowledge — in the best possible way. While my code-cracking skills are nothing special, deciphering television is pretty much my only skill, unless you count coffee-guzzling or enthusiasm for cocktails. Anyway, so far, Rubicon appears to be a mix of:

Millennium: A massive, mysterious, and frighteningly powerful organization juuuust this side of the law may be using its far-reaching influence for evil.
Nowhere Man: Guy loses everything and must be the sole agent for virtue within a corrupt organization. (Less action-y so far, but still.)
Glee: Let’s be real. Will Travers looks a LOT like Will Schuester. So far, this is the only similarity between the shows. But we’ll see! READ FULL STORY »

Sean Hayes lets his Kristin Chenoweth kiss do the talking: How did he do as Tonys host?

kristen-chenoweth-sean-hayesImage Credit: Andrew H. Walker/Getty ImagesSean Hayes found a very classy and funny way to address the Newsweek article suggesting that he’s unconvincing as a straight leading man: During his opening monologue as host of last night’s Tony Awards, he laid a long, wet, tongue-filled kiss on his Promises, Promises costar Kristin Chenoweth, who’d come out on stage to wish him good luck. “I know what you’re thinking,” he said. “She’s too short for me.” Watch the clip below. I would totally go to there. Especially if he’s just played the piano.

That kiss, along with his role-playing (Billy Elliott, Little Orphan Annie, and Spider-Man), earned Hayes two spots on our list of the Tonys’ Top 10 Moments. So, I think that means he fared well as host of the World Cup of Showtunes. (“At the World Cup, when somebody scores, they yell ‘Gooooooal!’. At the Tonys, when somebody scores, they yell ‘Girrrl,’” he quipped in his monologue, which was just long enough and totally bomb-free.) READ FULL STORY »

Matthew Morrison at the Tonys: Watch his shirt magically open

matthew-morrison-tonysImage Credit: Kevin Mazur/WireImage.comLast night, Glee stars and Broadway vets Matthew Morrison and Lea Michele took to the stage at the Tony Awards for a special performance. Watch it below. My favorite moment is at 2:00, when a collective attempt at psychokinesis by viewers suddenly opens Morrison’s shirt. Okay, we probably failed and it was merely the effect of him hitting the dance portion of his number, “All I Need Is the Girl.” Let the record show that the man can bust more moves than spins, his signature move on Glee. (How about he get to put ‘em on display in season 2, when he’s not rapping? Just when you think he might be out of breath, he holds a note.)

I’d hoped Morrison and Michele would perform together, but they sang separately. She started in the aisles of Radio City for her rendition of “Don’t Rain on My Parade.” She sounded great, and it was sweet the way she sat on Jonathan Groff’s lap in the audience. But I think I would have been more wowed had I not previously seen it on GleeREAD FULL STORY »

Katie Finneran, Tony winner: Where do you know her from?

Katie-Finneran-tonysImage Credit: Dimitrios Kambouris/WireImage.comA lot of people were Googling “Katie Finneran” this morning: It could be because the Promises, Promises star delivered a fantastic speech after winning the Tony for Featured Actress in a Musical. She had humor, expressing gratitude for the 20 family and friends who came in for the ceremony, actor Darren Goldstein proposing to her last week, and fellow nominee Angela Lansbury taking her to dinner two weeks ago. (She also noted that costar Kristin Chenoweth had loaned her her eyelashes for the night). READ FULL STORY »

'The Hangover' ranks No. 1 on all-time on-demanded list. How many of the Top 20 have you demanded?

Categories: Lists-o-rama!, Movies

Hangover-TysonImage Credit: Frank MasiAccording to a new industry study, The Hangover is the most-watched On Demand movie ever. Of course, On Demand has only been big for a few years, so “ever” in this case means “since the first CGI Alvin & the Chipmunks movie came out.” (That cinema classic squeaks on to the list at No. 6.) No. 2 went to Twilight, and No. 3 went to the slightly surprising Gran Torino.

Aside from that one Clint Eastwood drama, this is a list of popcorn movies — mostly comedies and romances of various sorts, with a couple of action flicks tossed in. They’re all the type of films I can easily see tons of people deciding to order on TV some random night. I think I might have even seen one or two of these movies On Demand myself. Not 10,000 BC (No. 19), though. That one I saw in theaters. Please don’t judge me.

Check out the full list of On Demand blockbusters via Variety after the jump. How many of these have you demanded?

Microsoft Kinect: New gaming device debuts at E3 with a mind-blowing presentation

Categories: E3, On the Scene, Tech, Videogames

x-box-kinectImage Credit: Elisabeth Caren/AP Images One of the perks of this job is being able to go to some major Hollywood awards shows and performances, but attending Microsoft’s unveiling of its new Xbox 360 motion-detection device, called Kinect, was an experience that trumped all the rest. The tech giant hired the French-Canadian circus group Cirque du Soleil to create an all-out extravaganza that’d introduce Kinect (and kick off the annual E3 videogaming convention) with a bang, and boy did they succeed. I think. See, I’m still trying to process the hallucinogenic fever that occurred Sunday night inside L.A.’s Galen Center. I’ll attempt to describe some of the evening below, but I also encourage you to catch the TV broadcast of the show on MTV this Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. (It’ll air again at 9 p.m. on Nick at Nite, mtvU, MTV Hits, and Logo). Now, grab your poncho and let’s begin. No, seriously, you’ll need a poncho for this ride. READ FULL STORY »
