Harry Potter series done filming: Where do the stars go from here?

harry-potter-castImage Credit: Stephen Lovekin/Getty ImagesGet out your time-turners, folks, because we’ve reached the end of an era. On Saturday, filming of the Harry Potter series came to a close. Warwick Davis, who plays Professor Flitwick, tweeted out the news: “Today is officially the last day of principal photography on ‘Harry Potter’ – ever. I feel honoured to be here as the director shouts cut for the very last time. Farewell Harry & Hogwarts, it’s been magic!”

It must have been a sad day for all the actors involved, especially the trio of young stars who have charmed audiences around the world since Harry Potter And The Sorcerer’s Stone was released back in 2001. (Fun fact: Considering the first movie started filming in October 2000, the Harry Potter films were in production for exactly nine and three-fourths years.) We’ve gotten the chance to watch Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint literally grow up before our eyes, and although so many child stars find themselves forever stuck in a proverbial Azkaban of type-casting, these three seem to have bright futures ahead of them, as people actually take them seriously.

So, I’m wondering: where do they go from here? Sure, they still have another year of promotional appearances for the two Deathly Hallows movies before they’re through with the Harry Potter universe, but once their time as part of the most successful franchise in film history wraps up, what avenues will they pursue? Allow me to put my divination skills to use as I predict the future for the magical trio: READ FULL STORY »

Evidence of a benevolent Internet: Zach Anner's journey into the Oprahsphere

It’s a rare day that presents overwhelming evidence of the inherent goodness of the Internet — but this, friends, is that day. (And on a Monday, no less!) Over the past few days, Zach Anner has become an online sensation — through, it seems, sheer force of goodness — after posting a video audition for Oprah’s Search for the Next TV Star, in which the really funny wheelchair-bound Texan explains that he has cerebral palsy (“the sexiest of the palsies”) and pitches “a travel show for people who never thought they could travel.” We could go on about the highlights (“This isn’t yoga, I’m just putting on pants.”), but instead we’ll just show it to after the jump: READ FULL STORY »

Johnny Weir would obviously Be Good on 'Dancing With the Stars'

Johnny-WeirImage Credit: Justin LubinIt seems Johnny Weir has become besties with former Dancing With the Stars pro Karina Smirnoff, and now they’re both angling to pair up for season 11. “I met [Karina] a few weeks ago and she was like, ‘Johnny, you are the perfect height for me. Let’s dance,’” Weir said. “So…it’s on. I’ve chosen my partner, I’m ready.” If only it were that easy! At least Weir’s casting would set back into ice one of the show’s most basic, inalienable tenets, which ABC shamefully disregarded at the end of season 10: THY FIGURE SKATER SHALL WIN.

10 (“Tehhhhhhhn!”) reasons Johnny Weir Would Be Good for ‘DWTS’

Ricky Gervais visiting 'Curb Your Enthusiasm,' MTV searches for first Twitter Jockey

excess-hollywood

  • Ricky Gervais will have a role on the next season of Curb Your Enthusiasm. HBO is also considering picking up the funnyman’s live-action pilot Life’s Too Short. Yes, it is, so I will watch this clip again. Because it’s still funny the 395th time. [Variety]
  • MTV is searching for its first Twitter Jockey, a “social media maven” who will “serve as a liaison between viewers and network honchos.” Five people will be chosen as finalists, and fans will choose the winner during a live show Aug. 8. If there’s a God, then Jesse Camp is landing this gig. [Associated Press]
  • Jake Pavelka will play “a suitor on Finding the One, a dating show” on an episode of Drop Dead Diva. Apparently, the plot follows a producer of Finding the One, who is being sued for “intentionally inflicting emotional harm” by making the world watch this. [People]

'Next Food Network Star' recap: A 'bizarre and confusing exercise'

next-food-network-starsImage Credit: Food NetworkLast night’s episode of The Next Food Network Star reminded me a little of that old Avril Lavigne lyric: “Why’d ya have to go and make things so complicated?” From Noreen’s baffling culinary viewpoint to Dzintra’s schizophrenic party plate to adorable Brad’s peanut-roasted debacle, it seemed like contestants were tripping over their own self-erected obstacles at every turn. Except for Das, of course, who realized sometimes a lemon-pepper chicken wing is all a crowd of 100 partygoers really wants to eat. And Aarti (picured), whose ricotta pancake and winning personality scored a last-minute triumph over her irritating self-doubt. Let’s hope she leaves the latter trait behind, like Aria did with the extra tray of meatballs that got abandoned in the oven. (Was anyone else obsessed with finding out whether those bite-sized treats caught fire and found new lives as charcoal briquettes?)

Anyhow…on to this week’s shenanigans! READ FULL STORY »

Breaking: Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp have good hair in 'The Tourist'

the-TouristThe first official image from The Tourist, the international spy thriller starring Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp, has been released. While my colleague Adam Markovitz has already told you what he thinks it’s really about based on paparazzi shots, I’ll tell you what I learned from this shot: The film has amazing hair stylists. That could be a dangerous fly-away length for Depp, and he looks clean. I’m sure fashion mags are already working on telling us how to steal Jolie’s look.

'The A-Team': Did the PG-13 rating ruin yet another action movie?

Last weekend,  The Kung Fu Karate Kid dominated the box office, while The A-Team pulled in an okay-but-not-sequel-worthy $26 million. I saw A-Team, and kinda enjoyed it (check out Owen Gleiberman’s spot-on review). But I thought there was one glaring problem with the movie: the PG-13 rating. What could have been an enjoyably coarse testosterone-fest felt pruned and bland. The characters were “badass,” but their badassery was utterly inoffensive. If you ask me, the movie’s mediocre box office is just further proof that Hollywood’s craven attempt to make teen-friendly films has practically destroyed a sainted genre: the contemporary action movie.

I understand why Hollywood aims for PG-13 with these big blockbusters. Giving a movie an R rating means that teenagers with lame parents don’t get to see your movie. (Or, more likely, it means that teenagers buy Karate Kid tickets and then sneak into your movie.) And don’t get me wrong. The PG-13 rating makes sense for superhero movies (which are mostly just stealth dramedies hiding underneath a few explosions) and fantasy films (which are mostly set in beautiful worlds without any naughty language.)

But A-Team is a movie about four dudes with guns who drive fast cars and blow things up real good. It’s utterly nonsensical that these guys use swear words about as often as prep-school preschoolers. READ FULL STORY »

Female cops on TV: It's a good thing we can't get enough of them

Categories: Television

Rizzoli_IslesImage Credit: Darren Michaels/TNTWho’s your favorite female cop on TV? She’s about to have more competition. Gabrielle Union has signed on for a potential spin-off to Lifetime’s Army Wives. According to The Hollywood Reporter, near the end of this season, we’ll see a Wives episode that serves as a backdoor pilot in which “Pamela Moran (Brigid Brannagh) returns to her former career and becomes a detective with the Atlanta police department. Union will play her partner, Detective Gina Holt.”

As much as I love the sexual tension that bubbles between co-ed crime-fighting duos (Bones, Castle), the pilot of TNT’s new drama Rizzoli & Isles (premiering July 12) has already reminded me how interesting two women can be all on their own. Angie Harmon (Women’s Murder Club) stars as badass and beautiful Boston homicide detective Jane Rizzoli, and Sasha Alexander (who you might remember from NCIS and our list of the 20 Most Shocking TV Deaths) as impeccably-dressed medical examiner Maura Isles. Yeah, they work with men (including Jane’s veteran former partner, a squeamish rookie, and an FBI agent played by Twilight‘s Billy Burke), but they’re the focus. When a serial killer with whom Rizzoli has a history returns in the premiere, it’s Isles’ bed Rizzoli ends up in (because her mother, played by Lorraine Bracco, showed up at her place and drove her crazy). Being able to say you’ve never been more afraid to someone, and not having to worry about whether he thinks you’re saying “Protect me” — that’s refreshing. Harmon and Alexander have great chemistry, we don’t need the sexual tension. (Though we do hope Burke sticks around so we get some.) Watch an intro to Rizzoli & Isles below. READ FULL STORY »

Lunchtime Poll: Battle of the host-types we didn't realize were such hot commodities

piers-jennyImage Credit: Solarpix/PR Photos; Jay Kravetz/PR PhotosCNN is talking to America’s Got Talent judge Piers Morgan about filling “a potential slot in its troubled prime-time lineup,” according to the NY Post. (EW’s calls to CNN and Morgan’s rep have yet to be returned.) Meanwhile, Oprah seems to have SINGLED OUT former Playboy/MTV/NBC personality Jenny McCarthy, who has a development deal with Winfrey’s Harpo Productions. A spokeswoman denied that McCarthy or anyone else would be specifically “taking over for Oprah.”

Ugh, I get really annoyed when people start clamoring for The Next ____, The Next ____, etc. There is no next anyone! New hosts of new shows will not “be” or even “embody” Oprah or Larry King. They will “be” themselves! That said/b–chfest over, it’s pretty weird that Piers Morgan and Jenny McCarthy are suddenly in demand. Poll!
