Kristen Stewart braved a return to the Late Show last night on her Eclipse promotional rounds. (For anyone who doesn’t remember her last miserably uncomfortable visit, the clip is after the jump.) There was an accidental allusion to funny business with co-stars. “That’s so not what I mean!” she groaned. And then another one. “Anyways, uh, he’s a really active guy,” she said. The audience tittered. Stewart grimaced. Her anecdotes pained her, stories trailed off in angry sighs. “You’re fine, it’s fine,” Letterman said, trying to let her off the hook. “I should never take weekends off.”
That said, she was miles more relaxed than her last visit. Ouch.
PopWatchers, I ask this in all seriousness, and am hoping for some answers beyond “She sucks!” or “You suck!”: Is it part of an actor’s responsibility to be charming in interviews? If your trade is acting, does that suggest that you can play breezy and relaxed in a five-minute TV appearance? Part of me appreciates Stewart’s authentic awkwardness, and part of me just wants her to take a breath, count to 10, and stop making promotional appearances so painful for everyone involved, including herself. One last programming note: I’m digging the red hair but tired of the one-shouldered dresses. You?

It pains me to watch how awkward she is in real life. They shouldn’t let her do press it depressing.
She is a teenager and supposed to be ackward, give her some time. But, if she can’t handle it she needs to move to lower profile acting jobs or another line of work. Press interviews are a part of the job of a big screen star.
she not a teenager anymore, isn’t she 20 now? she can no longer use that excuse.
and as far as the ackwardness, let me just say that she’s been in a few movies where she is laying on a bed in nothing more than a tee shirt and underware, usually waiting for a boy to kiss her, and yet we’re all supposed to believe that she’s shy????
if she’s attempting to be a young adult hollywood actress, she’s going to have to know how to do promotional interviews, its just part of the game. you can’t come on here and say that no one objects when DeNiro or Malkovich doesn’t like interviews. those man have proven themselves as real actors, and Stewart is no where near that level.
i’m well aware that no one is happy everyday of there lives, but she could at least improvise happiness during an interview. she is after all trying to sell her movie. a smile helps. if she can’t at least improvise, get out of acting.
I agree. I mean she is an ‘actress’ after all, she should ‘act’ in these interviews, like she does in her movies. Oh wait…
I don’t know, I kind of like that she’s awkward and uncomfortable. It reminds me of how I’d feel being interviewed in front of millions of people. Granted she is an actress and this is part of her job, but just look at the amount of press she gets for being so awkward. I’m sure TPTB aren’t mad at her.
Marie, did you read anything but my first sentence?
@Wend, if watching this humorous interview w/Kristen depresses you, I suggest you avoid the news, you’re thinking is too off kilter to handle it. And, for those who say that because she’s an actor, she should be able to be smooth in live TV interviews, that’s illogical. In interviews, the people have to talk about themselves & don’t know how the interviewer will respond. BTW, no one is good at every part of their job. We all have weaknesses. Also, for the complainers here who say Kristen can’t act, if that were true, directors & studios wouldn’t be hiring her. I believe they know more about acting than you do. I thought she did a good job on the show. She had the audience laughing whether she meant to or not. She brought pics of her pets. She smiled & laughed at herself. Give her a break!!
To ..The Truth and Marie….Don’t you know how to use Google? If you Google her name and look in Wikipedia it says she was born April 9, 1990 which makes her 20. I’ve seen several actresses half her age doing great interviews so age is no excuse…Dakota Fanning, Abigail Breslin, and Mae Whitman just to name a few they did great interviews when they weren’t even teens yet. I cannot watch her interviews it makes me uncomfortable she always seems on the verge of crying or cussing. If she can’t fake a good interview maybe she shouldn’t do them anymore. Alot of celebrities decline doing talk shows. She just needs grow up and quit acting so immature.
She did just fine. Jeepers! People laughed, Letterman laughed – she played off of him well given the topics. As Matt Lauer pointed out on the Today Show today, Kristen Stewart has directors and producers standing in line wanting to work with her. She refuses to FAKE it. Go Kristen! Chin up, feet up, go cuddle with Max! =) Great job on Regis and Kelly!!
I love Dave, I really really do but he could have helped Kristen in that interview. Knowing how awkward she was the first time and how disappointing it turned out, it took guts for her to come back. Let’s face it, the movie will do well whether she did Letterman or not. To answer the question at hand, I say actors don’t need to do talk shows like these if it’s not their strength. Some actors do it well – Sandra Bullock, Rob Pattinson, Hugh Grant – they just ooze charm and this environment highlights that. Shy, awkward introverts like Kristen perhaps work better in a more intimate one-on-one interview settings. EW has gotten some written articles off her interviews. I say let’s give the poor girl a break. Oh, and LOVE the new hair, Kristen!
Some actors are fantastic in their roles, but are too nervous/anxious/etc in interview-type situations. Harrison Ford is a terrific actor but looks like he’s terrified when at an awards show or in interviews.
@Jan: “If she couldn’t act, directors and studios wouldn’t want to work with her”? Not necessarily so, I mean, look at Keanu Reeves. He’s a great actor until he needs to portray any emotion, which he’s incapable of doing… because he’s a robot.
I’m not saying Kristin can’t act, because I think she can (Speak, anyone?), but there are plenty of famous people who either don’t act, or play themselves.
Gotta love “ackward.” I mean, that wouldn’t even SOUND like “awkward.”
Somewhere there’s an accent that produces “ackward”–Boston? Long Island?
I think she deserves some slack with these interviews, but if we’re using her acting talent as a measure, it’s no surprise she’s hopeless at this stuff.
Dave was not being a jerk and she definitely was a little awkward but wouldn’t you be too in her place? She’s one of the few actors or people in Hollywood who realizes she’s going to be appearing in front of millions of people. That’s more than a little daunting to me. Plus, she obviously does not fit into the cookie-cutter movie star role, nor should she. She’s a rare, weird type of person, and as someone who feels like a bit of an outsider sometimes, I appreciate seeing someone like me in tv and movies. Go Kirsten!
But I am NOT in her place. She is a veteran actress. This is her job. This is what she does. She is part of what will be a billion dollar franchise when it’s done. This is what she is supposed to do. If she can’t or doesn’t like it, do something else. Why should I feel badly for her? She sure gets paid well enough (which I do not begrudge her) to do this stuff.
You make the big bucks then do the damned job.
Acting is an art…appearing on talk shows is part of being a ‘star’ and I don’t think she’s so much into that.
This is her personality and I’m glad she doesn’t change for her ‘image’. Personally, I LIKE that she is real, genuinely a little awkward, but very easy to relate to. She seems like a cool girl and the twilight movies do not do her acting justice. Watch Adventureland, she’s fantastically real in it.
I am not a fan of the Twilight series, but I’ve seen her in a few other projects and I think she is talented in the roles she has played – even as Bella. She chose this career path. She has been doing this for at least 10 years. She should be well aware of the different appearances she will need to make to promote her movies especially for the Twilight series. Since she is a pretty decent actress, I don’t see what the problem would be with her trying to portray a calm and respectful young woman. She can still be a fun oddball and little different, but she doesn’t need to be rude. No one is attacking her on the red carpets or talk shows – stand up straight and smile for goodness sake!
I agree. There are tons of people comfortable on talk shows, but don’t posses a drop of talent(Kare Gosselain, Jersey shore brats). Sean Penn used to be pretty uncomfortable and so was DeNiro. A lot of people complaining about her probably didn’t even watch Letterman so why gripe? And many years ago, there were no tv talk shows, but we still had movie stars. I couldn’t care less if they go on Dave or Jay or whoever. The only job I expect of them is to deliver a good performance when I pay to see their movies. And I’ve never seen Twilight and never intend to. I’ve seen her in a couple of things but I’m not a big fan. I just don’t care if my favorite actors are good interview subjects. Then again, I couldn’t tell you the last time I watched a late night(or morning or afternoon for that matter) talkshow, so I couldn’t care less anyway.
@ Scott…she did the Dam job why do you think shes Famous! and rich
Kirstens’s one of the few actors or people in Hollywood who realizes she’s going to be appearing in front of millions of people. That’s more than a little daunting to me. Dave was not being a jerk and she definitely was a little awkward but wouldn’t you be too in her place? Kirsten obviously doesn’t fit into the cookie-cutter movie star ideal, nor should she. She’s a rare, weird kind of person, and as a person who feels like an outsider sometimes too, I appreciate seeing someone like me in tv and movies. Go Kirsten!
sorry kept saying the comment was duplicated when it never showed up so i reposted it with a different name lol
She’s one of the few working in Hollywood who want to be an ACTOR. Everyone else wants to be a Star. There’s a difference.
Oh please cut the over the top worship out. There are plenty of real actors in hollywood who will never get the chance she is getting so shut up
You don’t have to tell Dani to shut up, don’t be so rude.
She’s a creep. And very very lucky.
Though I really don’t care about her in the least (she was OK in Adventureland; Twilight is just so bad that it’s not fair to judge her acting based on it), I do feel bad for her. Her handlers and the Twilight people are shoving her into the spotlight, which she obviously doesn’t want/isn’t prepared for. Now look at Robert DeNiro and Harrison Ford… they are HUGE stars yet they have ALWAYS been very awkward in interviews; however, they are mature men who have earned their right to be awkward in the public’s eyes while Kristen is a young girl and as such isn’t granted the same amount of leeway.
Its endearing. Because thats exactly how I would act if I was on that kind of public stage.
Well I don’t watch letterman nor twilight but I caught this last night because she looked absolutely gorgeous in the previews. I like her as a person, not an actress.
i thought she was great…and much improved actually.
Agreed. So embarassing. Clearly Letterman doesn’t like her at all. She’s so weird. It makes me uncomfortable. This second interview was even worse than the first, because you can tell she TRIED.
I thought she did fine the first one was a liitle stilted but the second one did not come off badly to me.If anything Dave was the awkward one.I dont see all the “angry” sighs and she appears to be really getting smoother at doing these interviews.
What exactly made this so horrible? The audience laughed? She told stories, and it was Letterman who didn’t play off of her. I think so many of his interviews with actors turn out a little jilted and awkward. Considering Kristen’s tendency toward quirky mannerisms, this was above par, and moreover, why must every actor be exactly the same in interviews. At least when she appears on screen, something entertaining is bound to happen. Someone suggested that she should stop doing interviews, which is ridiculous because she’s generating publicity either way.
she need a course in press relations, public speaking, or just plain speech.
I’m not really sure why people who are incredibly awkward or uncomfortable being the center of attention and speaking in front of large crowds choose to go into show business. If you value your privacy THAT much, and hate the spot light being on you, why the hell would you pick the one profession where that’s pretty much the entire basis of your job?
…and to think a lot of you dummies go out and buy tickets to these horribly acted and produced movies.
For shame.
Loloita, phone Robert DeNiro and tell is what he says.
Lolita, phone Robert DeNiro and tell is what he says.
And Harrison Ford.
Fair point, but this girl is no Robert DeNiro, Harrison Ford, Johnny Depp, John Malkovich or Gary Oldman. Those actors also built their careers primarily on solid “actor’s” films or legitimate cultural phenomena where they were NEVER “bigger” than the films they were in. I think there’s a difference between that, and being an up-and-comer who has to pay her dues by doing crass promotional circuits.
And “awkward” doesn’t have to be the same as rude. There are many actors and actresses who are awkward in interviews but never come off as rude. Some interviews I’ve seen of her, Stewart does come off rude.
Johnny Depp, too…
+ Gary Oldman
But they have done some “fun interviews”. To be fair she was better last night. She didn’t look sloppy. But she really has to bring her A-game. If she doesn’t feel comfy then she should go on Leno. He babies his guests. She shouldn’t go on Letterman or Ferguson. She will get eaten alive.
Exactly. I think she’s too slow or maybe not the most intelligent person in the world to deal with smart a*ses like Letterman and Ferguson. She can’t hold her own with them. I know she’s been on Kimmel and Fallon a couple of times and I’m assuming she does better there, because I never hear too much about those interviews.
Her problem is NOT that she’s awkward, it’s that she has absolutely NO charisma at all. Johnny Depp is awkward, Lady Gaga is awkward, A LOT of celebs are awkward, but they’re charming, so that saves them. Kristen Stewart’s totally unlikeable.
Actually, I think a lot of shy, awkward people like acting because it’s a chance to pretend to be someone else. You don’t necessarily go into it thinking you’re going to be a movie star with all the obligations that come with that. Having said that, maybe she should do some theater in order to become more comfortable in front of an audience.
why is it suddenly that all this publicity crap comes with acting? Acting itself is an art, something that people feel passionate about. Kristen loves acting. Not being in the media spotlight. Its two different things. Plus she’s always been in small, indie films, she didnt know that she was going to be doing interviews like letterman in the future; I think she does everything incredibly well for someone who’s so normal and doesnt want to put on a hollywood act when being interviewed.
She is a a terrible actress in moveis (only plays awkward sullen teens, and not very well I may add) so in “real life” she doesnt have an “actress’s” skill to pull off being gratious and charming or entertaining in an interview. Even Gwyneth Paltrow, someone I find pretty talentless and pretentious, can manange to keep it together for a couple minute interview.
Ha..Ha..Ha.. I agree with you. Her awkwardness makes her seem authentic, but perhaps we’d be more forgiving if she was a decent actress. She’s quite terrible.
She gave good performances in “Speak”, “Into the Wild”, “Panic Room”, and “The Runaways.”
She was horrible in “Into the Wild.” even if she was on the screen for just five minutes. I haven’t seen the other movies you mentioned but I did see Adventureland and she was horrible in that too.
uh, Gwenyth Paltrow has an academy award. I’m not sure if they give those out to talentless people. But i do agree with you about your other point
She’s been a decent actress at times, but she IS pretentious. Her Goop Website is just insufferable.
No, website is not insufferable. I love it, the recipes are great! I also don’t find her to be pretentious, I think she is very charming in interviews.
Gwenyth Paltrow can be very good (though not particularly in the role she won the Oscar for). She deserved it for Possession, for example. Paltrow is a bad example. Try Oscar-award gifted Halle Berry – who can’t spell acting, let alone do it. Ugh.
An Academy awrd means nothing!!!!!!! Except you are the It person of the moment.
Easy the most undeserved acadamy award of all time and proof that with the right amount of marketing from the studio, an award can be bought.
Agree. After her first appearance, she should know better. And it is not Letterman who is the issue (he always is like that), it is the guest who has to have it together.
I agree, her clumsiness was cute after the first Twilight but now it just embarassing. If she can’t get it together, they should not send her to the Letterman show; she should visit more joyful hosts like Jimmy Fallon or Tyra. Tyra would have provided answers to her own questions lol, God bless her. I’ll miss that show.
Agree.
You guys are pathetic. I think she is WONDERFUL in all her awkwardness. It is the US culture that makes her seem weird the way some people here idolize celebrity. Because she is gorgeous you guys expect her to act a certain something that you have in your heads the way you think she should be. when you don’t get what you expect you start insulting, tearing a person down. It’s what I hate most about my country’s stupid culture. Why don’t you learn how to open up your mind and be more accepting of your fellow human beings.
She was not the one painful to watch. He was a complete jerk to her and I thought she handled it as well as anyone could have. Kudos to her. She is who she is and that, in a world of Britney Spears’ and Lindsey Lohan’s, is refreshing….
Not to mention, she looks hot with the new hair! She is fierce!!!
I have to say I agree with you, I think Letterman was being rude in this interview. He was not trying to do his job but instead to make her uncomfortable. She is not known for her interviewing but she was back on his show and trying to play his game but he was not even trying. I think she handled herself well considering how he acted.
Kristen was absolutely awkward in this interview. That said, Letterman has a habit of making his interview subjects feel uncomfortable if they don’t fall into his idea of the perfect guest. To me, it’s a cringeworthy tactic that makes him hard to watch, and if I were Kristen or others like her, I would refuse to do his show (well, if the studio would let me).
Everybody knows Letterman acts like that. If a relative newcomer like little Jaden Smith could handle himself, why can’t Stewart who has been in the business for over a decade.
She wasn’t good, but he was doing nothing to help her. Honestly, though, it wasn’t just him. He wasn’t helping her out, but he also wasn’t really trying to make it worse than it was, either (except for the discussion of wolves). It was the entire audience. They were acting like they were all fourteen (which was probably the case). It was ridiculous that they all had to giggle at every single way she said that she had more fun on this press tour than the previous one. Honestly, I’m no fan of hers, and I’ve got nothing but hate for everything Twilight, but the amount of crap this girl gets is ridiculous and unfair.
I don’t like Letterman and never have, but that is ALL he ever does. He’s been doing it for decades. She can’t handle it, don’t go on the show. He didn’t single her out.
Yes, she is an awkward interview, but I think alot of the fault in this one falls on Letterman. I love Letterman, and loathe Leno, so I hate to say this, but it’s interviews like this that are the reason Leno beats him in the ratings. Kristen has been on the show before and has said she’s an awkward, uncomfortable interview. She’s very private about her personal life. Now, she’s one of the biggest draws in Hollywood, and agrees to come back to do his show. She dressed up. She brought personal pictures from her home. She smiled. She engaged the audience a bit. She was willing to talk about her travels. She was loads more relaxed at the beginning of the interview than she was the last time she was on. She didn’t give him an olive branch, she gave him an olive tree, and he whacked it down. As a host, he should know his interview. He should know how to engage and not cause them to withdraw. He talked to her like she was 5. He interrupted when she was trying to make a point. He didn’t try to make her feel comfortable. Should she not worry so much about the interview? Yes. But there are loads of actors who are awkward or uncomfortable in interviews. Letterman should know how to diffuse that.
As for the comment someone made about “little” Jaden Smith being able to handle himself…he’s not a newcomer. He’s also an 11 year old who dealt with the interview by taking on his father’s persona. Oh yeah and that interview was awkward too.
But she’s awkward in almost EVERY interview. You can’t blame all of it on Letterman. He doesn’t do ALL of her interviews, does he?
And I’ve seen Emma Watson (quite gracefully, I might add) and Jaden Smith throw Dave’s brusqueness right back at him. If they can do it, surely this girl can.
Letterman’s always been like that, she’s just plain ole’ awkward to watch. I saw her again this morning on Regis & Kelly and she kept looking down at her hands and playing with her hair, so awkward and uncomfortbale to watch, BUT it’s endearing in a way. Heath Ledger was the same as her, not wanting the spotlight, but he had no choice because he got famous.
Letterman likes to play. He doesn’t just feed his guests the questions. His interviews are never easy regardless of the guest. He’s tough and he also likes to be entertained. Kristen Stewart (and she’s said this herself) is straight up boring. She can’t tell a story to save her life. She’s always fidgeting, which makes people uncomfortable. She acts like a complete idiot. I think Letterman was completely bored by her and just wanted the interview to end. She doesn’t know how to handle him. She’s not street smart at all.
How is she different from Linsdays and Britneys? I can assure you she doesn’t act significantly better than they do.
hmmm, she doesn’t party all night for starters…
@Taylor. She does party. She looks stoned 90% of the time.
I just love her awkwardness, but I thought she was refreshingly honest and endearing last night on Letterman and came across as funny. I love that she’s not scripted and is so real. Funny but that’s what makes her so adorable… her awkwardness. So sick of the cookie-cutter Hollywood types. Anyway, she’s getting all the great movie roles, she’s making the big bucks and you know something else… she stands out because she is different… maybe some of these “hard pressed to get a movie role” young actresses should take note and stop being so cliche and common…
ToTally agree with you lee… i love her… awkwardness and all.. i thought letterman was a real jerk the first time he interviewed her and the 2nd time as well.. u r supposed to treat guests like royalty.. he is a real ass to me.. just trying to be funny… as for Kristan, she is who she is and i think her honesty and realness no matter how strange it may be makes her second to none!!! more celebs should be real like her and Rob.. that is why i love them so SO much!! and she is a great actress too.. in the right role… obviously, she kicks ass in Twilight!!
p.s. i am a redhead and i LOVE her new look!! it ROCKS!
I disagree with you that Letterman should treat his guests like royalty. He is a comic genius and knows how to get a good interview. If he didn’t poke Kristin and try to get a reaction, the interview would have been completely uninteresting. I think it’s unfair to say that Kristin can be who she really is (awkward) and Letterman has to pretend to kiss her butt and treat her like royalty. It’s not like the stars are doing him a favor by gracing his show with their presence, he is doing them a favor as well by getting them national exposure.
haha, yeah ok, how long has Miss Stewart been around and how long has Letterman been around? Who should treat who like royalty? Yeah, exactly. Plus, does anyone have an example of how Letterman was a “jerk” cuz that’s not the impression I got at all…
Oh, and like JGam said, her red hair is HOT HOT HOT!!!
Yeah her hair does look good. But that dress looked better on American Gladiators.
She’s a natural strawberry blond.
I don’t think it’s part of an actor’s “responsibility” to be charming or interesting in interviews – but it’d be nice if they were.
I always think of Robert DeNiro, who is undisputably a great actor, but who ALWAYS looks like he’d rather be somewhere else when he’s making a talk show appearance.
In Stewart’s case, I can appreciate that the awkwardness is real (I’ll take it over phoniness or blandness). On the other hand, I don’t really think she’s doing the movie any favors with these painful appearances, since they seem to turn lots of people off. (And it’s not like people wouldn’t know there’s a new “Twilight” movie coming out if she weren’t on Letterman.)
She is a complete turn off. I’ve seen DeNiro in interviews and he’s not very warm, but he’s still charming. He’s still Robert freakin’ DeNiro. Kristen isn’t very well known, so people who were tuning into the Letterman and had no idea who she was, probably got a very bad first impression. First impressions are everything. It’s really hard to change someone’s opinion once they’ve made up their mind. I think they should probably just leave the interviews up to the other actors.
I am sory but if you don’t know who she is by now, then you must have been living on the moon. i thought Dave was just giving her a hard time and she came through it well. Sure she is not a great interviewer but she come on there to sell a movie and i think she did that well and she held her own with dave despite his trying to trip her up with the wolf talk. She did pretty well.
Just because you’re in the ‘spotlight’ does not mean you automatically have an outgoing, extroverted personality–or that you have to have one. No matter what we do in life, there are certain personality traits that are a part of who we are. If you ever watch awards shows, you can see the actors who work well under the pressure of a live audience and those who don’t. For people who read lines for a living, some of them have an excruciatingly difficult time with that Teleprompter. Stewart’s not the first actor who can be awkward in interviews or shy about the outside spotlight–see Harrison Ford, who many respect as a Hollywood personage. And yes, they get that publicity, interviews and fans are all a part of the job–doesn’t necessarily mean they’re going to just snap their fingers and be great at handling any or all of them.
Well said, Eri!
I actually found her funny and fine. She didn’t bother me at all like she does on other talk shows.
What I don’t understand is the surprise that she is awkward on television. She has no personality or presence on film when she can do multiple takes. Why should we expect anything differently when she is in a one shot setting such as a talk show? Please keep her away from the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.
I just finished “Dragon Tattoo,” they better NOT cast her. I was pulling for Ellen Page, but now I think is HAS to be an unknown. None of the actresses that have been mentioned (especially Stewart) are right for that role.
I think she looks great with her new hair. However, that interview was THE worst. She makes ME uncomfortable. I do think that she needs to mature and maybe have someone teach her how to compose herself and how to conduct interviews. I’m surprised the studios haven’t enforced it. I think when she is older, she will regret how she comes across.
I think doing interviews/press is part of an actor’s job (whether they like it or not). It’s a business. If you want to succeed, play the game.
It seemed to me that he was not trying to let her “off the hook”.He started the interview as if this was a chore admitting he didn’t know or care about the movies. It would of made me at 20 feel awkward and insecure. She did not allow him to bait her with the wolves questions and thanked him at the end for having her there. She showed the class he is clearly missing.
Dave was not being a jerk! Dave was interviewing her just like he would most people. She is really awkward and after doing SO much press for all the Twilight movies plus her other indie projects you would think she would be more relaxed at this stage in the game. She reminds me a lot of Alicia Keys when she first came on the scene. Really hard to watch and very awkward in interviews, and now with a lot of help, she comes across extremely pleasant and well spoken.
The first three people are probaly the same worthless person with no life, why wld u search her if u don’t like her. get a life and fast.
I didn’t really think the interview – or her hair – was bad at all. I am, however, also sick of one shouldered dresses.
I hate hate hate one armed/shouldered dresses/shirts etc. I think they make women look way more top heavy than they are and it is not attractive. I have never seen a woman wearing an attractive 1 shouldered anything.
totally agree!!! Hate the dresses. She needs someone to help her because her choices of dresses do not do her justice.
I find Kristen’s general distaste of the Hollywood machine, her uncanny individuality, and graceful “awkwardness” endearing and charming.
Dave seem inhospitable, unremarkable, and defensive.
@Chris, I agree with the “baiting”. She demonstrated class when a seasoned vet showed her none.
I’m hoping she’ll break free from the entire Twilight saga. With the right coaching and maturation, Kristen could develop as a talented actress.
Oh please. If she hates the Hollywood machine so much, why is she in Twilight of all films? Pre-Brangelina, Angelina Jolie did the whole anti-Hollywood thing and still managed to be cool about it and come off somewhat genuine.
It’s a well-documented fact that none of the Twilight actors were aware of what a phenomenon it would be when they filmed the first one. Say what you want about the quality of the movies, but what exactly is wrong with Kristen? I think she comes off as nervous, but genuine.
Because…Kristen Stewart isn’t cool. That’s the whole point. She’s awkward, not purposely anti-Hollywood…although she doesn’t fit well into the mold for impeccably coiffed, giggly Hollywood starlets who are perfectly PR-savvy so as to appear blandly delightful and primed with stock interview responses. If you view that as a negative, then so be it – I think it’s refreshing. But she obviously can’t duck out of contractually obligatory interviews. I don’t know why people are so unforgiving of social awkwardness; as has been pointed out in a previous comment, actors who are just are not comfortable putting on a cool, breezy interview persona and are not good at all at press tours are not unheard of. If you can’t handle watching people who aren’t socially graceful, then I don’t know why on earth you’d watch a Kristen Stewart interview.
People who can’t handle a socially awkward person but still choose to watch a Kristen Stewart interview aren’t nearly as bad as a person who hates all things Hollywood and decides to become an actress. Come on.
“It’s a well-documented fact that none of the Twilight actors were aware of what a phenomenon it would be when they filmed the first one.”
Give me a freaking break. While the fad was nowhere near as crazy as it is now, a 30-second Google search would have let any one of them know that the series WAS growing in popularity and DID have a core of crazy obsessed fans. I don’t buy the whole argument that “They didn’t know what they were getting into!”
If they were too lazy or glib to actually do research into the books and their fan base before they signed on, that’s their problem.
I like how she doesn’t put on a fake persona when doing interviews. She’s someone who seems uncomfortable but since the first Twilight movie, more at ease.
It’s well known that none of the cast knew what a phenomenom the movies would be. They probably never expected that they would become stars, especially Pattinson, Stewart, and Lautner. The first two probaby agreed to do the films for something commercial so in her case she could do more indie work. Pattinson clearly is every more uncomfortable than her doing press, but his mannerisms aren’t nearly as criticized as hers.
You can’t help but compare them and the Harry Potter leads. Daniel Radcliff and Emma Watson appear so much more professional and comfortable with the press.
yeah i totally agree
