World Cup miracle! U.S. scores in stoppage time, advances to next round!

Landon-DonovanImage Credit: Stuart Franklin/Getty ImagesHow did that just happen? After 90 minutes of missed opportunities, blocked shots, fruitless hustle, and some seriously debatable refereeing, the United States soccer team prevailed over Algeria to advance to the next round of the World Cup! When the clock finally hit 90:00, it seemed like it was all over. The U.S.’s admirable campaign to get Americans interested in soccer had failed. Our dream team hadn’t lived up to expectations. Soccer moms across America had lost some common ground with their kids. But then, just as I was about to click out of my gamecast, it happened. In the last few minutes of additional stoppage time, star U.S. player Landon Donovan connected the ball with the back of the net, and the United States took a 1-0 lead over Algeria! Even here in the EW offices, an audible cheer rang loud and clear. The game finished moments later, and in a single play, the U.S. went from the back of the pack to first place in Group C. (Check out the video below.)

From here, the U.S. team advances to the next round along with England, who beat Slovenia 1-0. What will happen next? There’s no way to be sure, but after watching what may have been the most exciting U.S. gooooooooal in World Cup history, I can’t wait to find out! (Plus, I have an excuse to keep playing Shakira’s World Cup anthem on repeat…)

Were you watching the game, PopWatchers?  How far do you think the U.S. will go? Twitter is shut down with excitement, so put you celebratory comments here!

  • Kisha

It was thrilling!Like the commentator said “Hollywood could not write a better ending”.
    Go USA on Saturday.

  • Kaci

That game was AMAZING. I still think FIFA refs have it out for USA (with yet another mysterious offsides call), but I’m hoping USA will make it far. Thank goodness for ESPN3 so I can watch in my office! :)

    • Holly

Me too!! I had my earbuds in and I had to stop myself from standing up and screaming.

      • goldngirl830

Same here but w/o earbuds…glad my boss was late because I was cheering! Go USA!

  • nodnarb

I want to have Landon Donovan’s babies. And I’m a dude.

    • Q

      Get in line!!

  • Mindy

I cannot believe they pulled that off! I was so sure the game was over and we were out. It is high time America joins the rest of the world and gets obsessed with this sport!

    USA USA USA USA!!!!!!!

  • Q

Couldn’t get ESPN3 to play in the office, but the audio worked. Hope my cube neighbors were OK with the jumping up and down and screaming!!

  • A J

Beautiful. So many chances; I almost had a heart attack about 7 times. This team is something else.

  • Paul

    Greatest game ever… GO USA!!!

  • Mary

The end of that game was better than the World Series, Stanley Cup, NBA Finals, and Superbowl combined. And maybe most Americans don’t appreciate the beautiful game like they should, but I sure as hell do and can’t wait for saturdays game! Now I just need Italy to wake up and make some magic happen and then both my teams are in the final 16…

    • Vince from NYC

Damn Streight Mary! Go USA and Forza Italia!

    • KP

I agree about most stuff, but the Stanley Cup Finals were WAYYY more exciting. Blackhawks winning in overtime to bring the cup for the first time in almost 50 years?? C’mon!

  • Melanie

Such an amazing finishing! The result went from nearly being heartbreaking to being inspiring in seconds!

  • Kate

I was watching on Game Cast, so I had to wait for the posts, ESPN 3 sound was too erractic for me to be covertly watching in my office, but I turned it on later and the highlight show ESPN does at seven shows you a lot and Christian Fowler and Alexie Lalas pretend well.

Best Week Ever site has the perfect post about it. Me and my bro leaped and ran around in a circle and neither of us even likes soccer much.

  • harry

    yesssssssssssss!!!!

  • LisaMama

Thanks for the SPOILER in the headline!!! I was waiting to watch the game with the husband and kids after work!!

    • nodnarb

Real Americans watched it at work!

      • Luddite

Realer Americans said “Screw it” at half-time and left work to find a TV. (Okay, that’s what I did. No judgment on anyone else.)

      • nodnarb

I actually “worked from home” today! Shhhhhh! :)

      • Ceballos

I may or may not have taken a “lunch” break to drive home and watch the conclusion…I also may or may not have hit my hand on my ceiling fan from excitement when Donovan scored his gooooaalll.

      • nodnarb

I was jumping up and down screaming. Scared my dogs so bad, they ran off to hide behind the bed! My heart rate still hasn’t returned to normal.

      • Ceballos

I was so angry that the Algerians were blatantly playing for a draw toward the end of the game, despite the fact they needed to win by 2 goals to advance…made Donovan’s goal all the more shocking and glorious!

    • :D

Lisa, there is no way you could have dodged this. It’s everywhere you look. Lighten up and enjoy the victory.

    • Desmo

      Spoiler alert? Are you serious?

    • Mark

You should read the chapter “don’t browse entertainment sites” in the book “how to avoid spoilers”.

  • DomeFoam
