Lunchtime Poll: Eliot Spitzer to host CNN show

Former New York governor and prostitute enthusiast Eliot Spitzer will replace Campbell Brown in CNN’s 8 p.m. time slot. Along with Washington Post columnist Kathleen Parker, Spitzer will host a roundtable discussion program to debut this fall. “Other cable news channels force-feed viewers one narrow, predictable point of view; in contrast, CNN will be offering a lively roundup of all the best ideas,” explained CNN president Jon Klein. So many questions! Among them: “Will this end up boosting CNN’s ratings?”…and the important one below. [THR]

I’m amazed at how this man could break the law in the state of NY, be reviled by millions, and then turn around and get a job on CNN. Unreal.

Agreed. This is so gross. I hate when people who abuse their positions and generally misbehave end up having their notoriety rewarded. Personally, I live a respectable life. I married a good man, we have jobs and pay taxes, we chose career paths that would allow us to help others, we work hard at these jobs, we support charities, we have advanced degrees (well, mine will be coming in the next few months), we are kind to people and animals, we recycle/reduce/reuse, we obey the law…where’s OUR tv show?? Oh, right. We try to be good people, and that’s neither interesting nor deserving of a reward. Maybe I’ll start a prostitution ring and then get caught and then get a book deal and make tons of money. It’s the new American dream!

I want to note that I’m all for forgiving people when they demonstrate their repentence and determination to change their ways…but I don’t like when they end up rewarded PURELY because their notoriety will attract attention. I haven’t followed Spitzer at all, but hopefully Jenn is right that he’s got some valuable political commentary… but I still think it likely that his name and juicy past was more important to CNN than his political insight. And if that’s the case, it’s pretty gross. Please prove me wrong, CNN!

People who sit in judgment are the ones that are wrong. Perhaps the state would be in better shape today if he were there.

Seriously? That’s just nonsense. The man broke the law and betrayed his role as Governor. Any citizen is well within their rights to “judge” for that.

Maybe the US would’ve been in better shape had Nixon remained President. But he was rightfully pushed out, because he broke the law. It matters. And the idea that our elected officials should not be held to a higher standard – and shouldn’t, you know, break the law, is partially why we end up with so many loser politicians anyway.

So you are saying Randy Jackson should stand up?

  • Jenn

I will definitely be watching. Since he’s been out of office, I’ve found Eliot Spitzer’s honest political commentary quite refreshing, hooker problem or not.

      What was your rate?

    • Elyse

      I agree!

Spitzer is a smart guy–except when it comes to the ladies. I was actually sad to see him go in NY. I’ll be interested to see what he does on TV.

I won’t watch for various reasons, not necessarily because of his infamy. Remember that G Gordon Liddy has had a show for years and if my memory serves me, he went to prison. Obviously moral character and actual journalism or broadcasting experience have nothing to do with getting a job on TV or radio. All that matters is whether or not the executives think someone can get ratings.

  • Slugo

He should have the people who were not good enough for Jerry Springer.

  • Yes

Look at Charlie Sheen’s life and look how he has not paid in any way professionally. It’s beyond ridiculous.
I’m not from NY though so I’m not familiar with his background, though I think he did some good things there when he was the Attorney General.

I won’t be watching but glad he’s got a gig. I’m from the area and sorry folks, but I think most New Yorkers wish he would’ve stayed in office. The NY state goverment has been in complete shambles since he left. And he was big on beating the crooks on Wall Street.
