As someone who has worked in the journalism industry for a number of years. I think that it is wonderful that someone is still turning a profit for printing words on any paper medium/media and think it is fantastic that the owner of a publishing company is willing to spread some of the wealth to those people who work hard at stressful jobs in an underpaid and struggling industry. This is something almost unheard of in the industry. I have been laid off from several publishing companies during my career because the companies weren’t making enough profit and they decided to slash staff to make up for it. I am currently working outside of the industry after being laid off during a massive corporate lay-off by the largest publisher in my state and have watch all the other publishers in town slash staff left and right…this however give me hope that not all publishing companies are chasing the dollar at the cost of their employees.
Though I hope O magazine is doing well, I suspect that she would give the bonuses even if it wasn’t. She makes enough money from other endeavors to pay out the magazine workers.
I hear she’s an insane slave driver, but holds herself to the same standards…so I’m thinking they earned her generosity.
All I know is that benefits and pay at Harpo are exceptional. Lots of vacation time.
For a person that generates as much revenue as Oprah this is actually a pretty paltry amount as far as bonuses go. I work for a crappy cheap a$$ Chinese company that had an awful year last year and still got 10K. Oprah craps more than that and I’m talking about the total not the 10k
You say that, but I’m certain that her staffers aren’t complaining!
She doesn’t earn huge revenues compared companies like Walmart. And actually revenues are way down in the magazine business so it’s even cooler of Oprah to reward her staff like this.
Makes me wish I was a staffer at O. But, as for the IPAD, don’t you think they were probably given to her by Bill himself…!
