“Most Americans don’t care about soccer, but every American cares about defeating the English.”

Speak for yourself; I was rooting for England, and will continue to do so for as long as they’re still in contention, or at least until they come up against Italy.

I would just like to point out that I was in a pub (in England) watching the US game, and everyone’s reaction was “Not again!”. We do it all the time, unfortunately, so not film-worthy.

Articles like these make me hate EW. Also our Rock n Roll is way better. Lastly, Ugh.

    • Desmo

People like you make me hate reading comments on EW.

    • Kylie

American rock n roll sucks and Hip-Hop in general is crap (with a few exceptions) so I wouldn’t say American Hip-Hop is all that much better seeing as most American Hip-Hop sucks.

‘Most Americans don’t care about soccer’
Well most American’s aren’t smart then huh

  • BG

    The Jamaican Bobsled Team!

    ooooohhh, wait…

  • Kylie

This is really pathetic. Only Americans would turn a tie game into a global defeat of the UK. USA tied not because they are amazing athletes but because England made a mistake and the US caught a lucky break. Don’t try to make it out to be anything it’s not.

To be fair, most Americans know it was a tie game and in fact the Three Lions outplayed us. The only ones calling it a win are cheeky headline writers (see the New York Post) and entertainment writers who appear to have a small grasp on the tournament structure… and simple math apparently.

    • Dan

Kylie, if your reading all of these posts in depth, you’ll see that most of us recognize that England played much better. We also realize that we got EXTREMELY lucky to get the draw, which is really the point of the discussion. Almost the whole world, including every person I know who’s into soccer and myself thought England would win. So for the USA to keep England to a draw, even in the ugly, lucky fashion it was, is a practical win. England was favored 50 to 1, so to say that’s not amazing, even if we got lucky, is to really to miss the point of the entire discussion.

Over Reaction…This is not an elimination game, or even a championship series. It is a round-robin, and England can easily recover and win the title. Watch.
I’ll say it again…..duh duh duh

  • MissFern

They already made a great movie about an epic sports blunder – Ray Finkle in Ace Ventura? Yes.

  • Cleetus

I didn’t think Americans could get any sadder than to treat Rob Green’s error as some kind of victory. Give it a few weeks and the USA will be heading home, while the rest of the world celebrates.

    • nodnarb

And when England’s crappy keeper makes another blunder, they’ll be packing their bags too.

      • therealeverton

Every experienced keeper has at least one of those errors in their history. I doubt that will happen again for some time. If it seems likely then one of the other 2, very good, keepers will replace him.

You could be right about England packing their bags too. Lots of talent but still a little too easy to play through and too many injured players taken to a tournament. I don’t know why we always do it! AArRRGGGGGhhhhhhhhhhhh!

      • nodnarb

Well, sure, but not at the World Cup! Face it, England’s got a major keeper player. That’s why the Prem keeps importing ours!

      • nodnarb

        I meant keeper PROBLEM!!! Hehe

      • therealeverton

        nodnarb :)

Oh you’d better believe at the world cup. there must be some “word cup goalkeeping howlers” video on youtube! Thee are so many it’s unreal. On Sunday Algeria’s keeper Faouzi Chaouchi made an even worse blunder than Green and there’s Denmark’s stupendous own goal from today. World champions Argentina lost their first match of Italia 90 because of an amazing goalkeeping error. Something that might cheer England fans up a bit is that Argentina again made the final that year, despite losing that game. They shouldn’t have though, they were a poor team with disgraceful dirty tactics, including barging the referee. They did though have the, lessened, talents of probably the 2nd greatest footballer of all time, Maradona.

      • nodnarb

The ESPN commentators won’t shut up about how the Jambalaya ball (yes, I know!) flies so maybe there are more blunders to come. Green just better hope it’s not him again!

      • Lg

Maybe since that ball looked possessed, skipping around the field.

    • therealeverton

Well in a few weeks we’ll be at the semi-final stage, so almost everyone will have gone home. With the possible exceptions of Brazil, Spain and Argentina everyone still in at the semis will be overjoyed.

  • Emma

um… England currently ranked 8th in the world. USA 14th. Not sure why everyone is making such a big deal. Not exactly the biggest upset ever.

    • therealeverton

      Thank you.

It’s like the players, led by Donovan, said themselves. 2 World cups ago a draw with England would have seemed like a massive achievement and sparked a lot of celebration, for the plyers. Now they have enough players who play, or have played, in the best leagues n the world, in the biggest competitions in club football and experience of several world cups that a draw is just a draw. They know, as much as England created chance, that if they had finished their own chances America could very easily have won that game. It was not a david & Goliath result, it was a fair result and means nothing unless America get good results in their other games. I think they should, should, win them both. But the beauty of football is its unpredictability. Almost anything could happen. IT aint the biggest and best loved game in the world for nothing.

“The final score was 1-1, which counts as a practical win for the U.S. thanks to the bizarre arithmetic of soccer tournaments.”
It was a practical win because most people expected the U.S. to lose. The arithmetic of soccer tournaments, which are not bizarre at all, have nothing to do with why it was a practical win. As far as the arithmetic goes, both teams are exactly tied.

Then again, as a previous poster pointed out, the U.S. team is pretty highly ranked. It wasn’t really a huge upset.

  • Angela

One blunder that comes to mind is Zidane’s headbutt in his last World Cup match ever.

  • Jeff C.

I would say Greg Norman’s choke at the 1996 Masters. Started the day 6 shots in the lead and lost by 5. This choke was particularly slow and painful to watch, seeing as Norman came up short in so many other major tournaments.

  • BW

I’ll tell you what I care about–dumba@@ blog writers who don’t even have the respect to call the most watched sport in the world football instead of soccer. And to further prove what a local hick they are, they go on to say that every American cares about defeating the English. The USA is just a small part of America, and I think the other few million Americans should get a vote before we crown ourselves champs of a sport our sportswriters clearly know nothing about. Get out of your trailer and learn something about the rest of the world!
