The first official image from The Tourist, the international spy thriller starring Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp, has been released. While my colleague Adam Markovitz has already told you what he thinks it’s really about based on paparazzi shots, I’ll tell you what I learned from this shot: The film has amazing hair stylists. That could be a dangerous fly-away length for Depp, and he looks clean. I’m sure fashion mags are already working on telling us how to steal Jolie’s look.

Thank you Mandi! I have been thinking the exact same thing from all the pap shots! Angelina’s hair especially looks amazing and I currently want to see this movie for no other reason than to see more of the hair!

This movie may suffer from TMHS: Too Much Hotness Syndrome. Ugh, I just watched Once Upon a Time in Mexico last night… oh Johnny Depp, how can you be so gorgeous and likeable in every single role you play??
Question. Does anyone else wonder if movies like this one that have so much paparazzi coverage end up suffering at all when the movie is finally released? I remember back when Brad Pitt was working on Troy, the paps were all over him and Jennifer Aniston, his body, hows their marriage, blah blah blah. And that movie didn’t do so hot at the box office (though everyone I ever talk to about that movie LOVES it … which I find strange). Also, I remember the paps all over the set of Oceans Twelve and that movie didn’t do so great either. Of course the thing to remember with both of the examples I’ve given here, they are generally regarded as not very good movies which is probably the largest reason they didn’t do so well.
I want to see more of Venice!
i just wanna see angelina! But honestly, I’m looking forward to “Salt” more than this. I think Depp has been making boring acting choices for years now (relatively speaking) and has been getting remarkably little flack for it on account of all the good will towards him due to his past work and the fact that he seems to be a nice guy in Hollywood (a rarity).
Boring acting choices? Jack Sparrow, Sweeney Todd, J.M. Barrie, the Mad Hatter, and John Dillinger beg to differ.
Sparrow, Todd and the Hatter are all facets of basically the same manic archetype. Barrie was a good choice, yes, and while he was a good Dillinger, the film itself left me cold.
I totally get what Gabby’s saying. Wood, Scissorhands (more mellow), Wonka, Todd, Crane, the Hatter and Sparrow are all basically different angles of one basic character — eccentric, possibly dangerous, weird, idiosyncratic.
It’s a copout to say “well, they’re all eccentric characters, so it’s all the same.” That’s BS. Jack Sparrow and the Mad Hatter may both be eccentric or weird characters, but they are very different, and Depp played them quite differently. I’d like to see any other mainstream actor pull off a character like Jack Sparrow or Sweeney Todd the way Depp did. There’s a reason those performances garnered him critical acclaim and awards/nominations.
And I’ll agree about Public Enemies leaving me a little cold as well, but that was a problem with the script and it didn’t diminish his performance. It certainly in no way was a “boring acting choice,” as Gabby said. Same goes for the other performances I mentioned.
@Adam: She said “relatively speaking” meaning for HIM the choices have been uninspired.

Johnny looks amazingly like Benjamin Bratt in The Cleaner. Maybe they could play brothers in something. Too much cheekbones and smoldering looks to go to waste.

I didn’t think a pair could look hotter than Angie and Brad in Mr. and Mrs. Smith but Johnny and Angie in this look absolutely gorgeous. Can’t wait for the finished product.
