Oil spill update: Mr. Costner goes to Washington

costnerImage Credit: Mark Wilson/Getty ImagesToday in celebrity-driven oil spill solution news: Kevin Costner headed to Washington to talk about his world-saving oil spill technology…and how it won’t save the world. Sad trombone. But at least Ocean Therapy Solutions, the business venture Costner has invested in that created oil-separating equipment, can help with the clean-up, and could solve smaller spills in the future: “What I can provide is a technology that is available immediately, a technology that will allow rigs to resume operation and put people back to work.” Sounds good, as long as dude’s not proposing turning our urine into clean drinking water.

In all seriousness, props to Costner for lending a hand and for rightly insisting that, in this time of crisis, we all need to “come together.” Have we tried separating the oil and water with a mojo filter?

Call me jaded, but I’m suspicious that his motives here are philanthropic. After all, he is an investor in this particular corporation. Can you imagine the windfall he’d receive? Further, he’s a celebrity, not a qualified expert. Why does his opinion on this even matter?
