'Twilight' vs. 'Harry Potter': Which clip looked better?

twilight-harry-potterLast night’s MTV Movie Awards brought the premiere of clips from The Twilight Saga: Eclipse and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Watch them below, then tell us which one looked better.

Pros for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse:
Taylor Lautner’s wet and/or gelled hair.
Robert Pattinson’s golden eyes.
Wolves that finally look scary when they snarl.
Includes the inevitable winner in next year’s Best Kiss category.
Also includes a shot of Jasper that doesn’t make us giggle. (Always worth noting.)
The action sequence at the end gets the job done.

Pros for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows:
Daniel Radcliffe’s wet hair.
Daniel Radcliffe’s stubble.
The drama of two friends turning on one another is greater than the drama between vampire and werewolf. (So is the acting.)
Includes the inevitable runner-up in next year’s Best Kiss category.
The voice of Voldemort, which makes Harry fans want to rally behind him.

Vampires suck; wizards rule!! Is anyone besides tween and teen girls into Twilight?

    • Jane

      Depressed housewives.

      • UGH

Where’s the “none of the above” option of this thing?
Both properties are the most overrated crap to hit the screens!

      • Ashley G.

@UGH The HP franchise is this generations star wars, it is in no way overrated and has been a series of consistently wonderful films (minus PoA, which was quite dreadful)……Twilight on the other hand is full of people who can’t act (KStew) and terrible screen writing.

      • Ashley G.

Also, when you watch the Twilight clip and then HP it is painfully obvious the twilight lacks any sort of decent acting. Deathly Hallows will be epic! I predict it is it the highest grossing movie this year

      • Gazza

@Ashley G. I actually think the acting’s improved from New Moon.
It’s not as good as HP though.

      • RJ

This generations Star Wars??? Are yopu freaking kidding me?!?!?!? Harry Potter is no different than any other movie that came along. What has it changed? Nothing! No Innovative new film making. No brand new idea (we have seen wizzards before). The first two were horrible, the third. . not so horrible, they didn’t get good untilthe fourth movei. The only people who saw it multiple times are the same girls who go see the Twilight movie multiple times. When Star Wars came out EVERYBODY saw it multiple times. So about the tangent, and don’t get me wrong I am more excited about HP by far over the new Twilight moves. But you are ignorant way beyond your education level if you ever try to compare it to Star Wars. Can you tell me which Oscars besides make up and costumes the HP movies have won.
If you would have compared Lord Of The Rings to Star Wars then you may have a fighting chance.

        Sheesh.

      • Anita

You kid. Agree with RJ there. The HP movies are NOT this generations Star Wars. And though I do adore the HP books, the HP movies have been disappointing with the exception of Prizoner of Azkaban. Now this was a beautiful film.

      • b

When Star Wars came out, nobody had DVD players. Now not only do plenty of adults see the HP movies in theaters more than once, but those who don’t don’t have to b/c they can buy the DVD a few months later! Star Wars wouldn’t get as many repeat viewings in the theater these days, either.

I do agree that HP is hardly this generation’s Star Wars – it’s bigger than Star Wars, as far as the whole franchise goes. The movies are of uneven quality (HATE #4), but the books have easily surpassed SW in overall popularity.

      • Erin

@Ashley G, PoA wasn’t dreadful, it was just very different from the rest of the series, like the book was. In fact, it was probably one of the better movies, especially when compared to OotP.

And i don’t even really mind twilight but seeing those clips from DH, probably my favorite book in the series, was so exciting. Not to mention that it actually made the movie look amazing, as opposed to the eclipse trailer which made it look like, well, exactly what most of us were expecting

      • Erin

The acting in the Harry Potter preview alone surpassed all of the acting in the Twilight Saga. And this is coming from someone who doesn’t mind Robert Patinson and actually likes a couple of Kristin Stewarts lesser known works

      • Lily

Agree with Erin – KStew has given wonderful performances in Panic Room (when she was 12), Speak, The Cake Eaters and Into The Wild. I loved the first TWILIGHT, directed by Catherine Hardwicke, couldn’t stand New Moon, and will pass on the rest of the films. Eclipse looks lame. Stilted acting bad make-up — Harry Potter, on the other hand, rocks and has been consistently great for 10 years. Can’t wait for Deathly Hallows. The acting in the HP films is by some of England’s greatest actors, and the 3 leads, Daniel, Rupert and Emma are always wonderful. So for me, hands down, Harry Potter clip over Eclipse.

      • kurt

and why did you pick DEPRESSED….Most of them are on HAPPY Pills….provided by the Pharmaceutical Industries to make us all little sheep and follow the Leader…wonder where the Leaders have gone

      • Gabby

How many movie series do you know could have continued as long as Harry Potter? Probably…none. Harry Potter is an amazing book, with amazing movies that follow them. Dan, Rupert, and Emma not to mention Tom, all OWN Kristen, Robert and Taylor. Sorry Rob, should have stuck to being a dead hufflepuff…just saying.

    • Allie

doc, don’t forget the moms! lots of them seem to love twilight. but harry rules!

      • mari

I resent that. I’m a mom and I detest Twicrap.

      • me

Amen….I’m a Mom and I agree. I detest Twilight and love HP. I think Rupert Grint is HOT!

      • Lizzie

The only people who are just as annoying as Twilight lovers are Twilight haters. It’s as if both groups are in a shouting match. Twilight doesn’t really appeal to me, but I can appreciate the fact that there is a franchise aimed towards young women, much like Transformers is aimed towards young men.

    • Mariam

      They aren’t vampires!
They’re sparkly, stalkerish douchebags in trees.

      • LOL

LOL! People actually watch this crap?

      • Liz

Haha! Mariam that is the best and most accurate description I’ve ever heard!

      • Jenny

        exactly!!

      • Anti-Twi

@Mariam… yes they are idiots on trees.. and I would rather was wizards kick the crap out of old Voldy instead of vampire and werewolf fighting over a girl that shouldn’t be fought over…

      • kurt

and its called a Book..HP Kids are Wizards who fly on a Broom…and using a stick and invisible Blanket…I guess this is normal to you ….oh look the guy on the Broom lets have him over for Dinner…….

      • Gabby

        ditto to that

    • Jane

The only vampires worth watching are on TrueBlood! When the teens and moms are ready to crossover, come and see what vampires are really all about!

      • jodipo

oh please, true blood is garbage, but then so is twilight. Its ok to like garbage, as long as you can acknowledge what it is.

and the harry potter movie will be so much better than anything twilight could ever produce. The acting alone guarantees it

      • nykolus

        hell yeah, jane!!!

      • Marie

the Harry Potter clip makes Eclipse look like child’s play. the Deathly Hallows films are going to be fantastic, i can’t wait!!!!
i will not be paying to see Eclipse, the preview alone is proof that it’s a waste of money.
but i must also recommend the Vampire Diaries on the CW. it isn’t True Blood, but it’s better than the Twilight Saga.

      • TVD

Agreed, Vampire Diaries has been amazing, I’m reading the books now and the story is really very different but the TV series is fantastic. My roommates and I are all in our 20′s and we are on the couch every Thurs to watch it, it is really a great show. Full of suspense!

      • alyson

Total agreement…..True Blood is awesome! I love Eric! Hot hot hot!

      • jenn

true blood is the worst ever. when the books suck, you can’t expect much from a series revolved around it. having that said, after reading true blood i’m convinved meyers of twilight sort of ‘borrowed’ some things about her vamps. just sayin’

      • kurt

True Blood is the Shi….st thing I ever saw…Porno for sexually frustrated People..and the Story…juck…Just wait for the 3rd season where everybody is doing it with anybody anywhere..covered as a Vampire Story. PERVERT

    • s

      mormons, to answer your question

    • mari

Come on now. It isn’t “Vampires suck!” — it’s SPARKLY Vampires suck!!

      • Júlia L.

        totally right.

    • wino

Umm, Im a fan of both. Shocker. And no, im not a tween and im not a depressed housewive. Harry is the superior acted, filmed movie BUT Twilight is still fun to watch.

      • Dom

Correction: Twilight is painful to watch

      • Celia

I agree with Dom. I mean seriously…did we see the same clip?? That Twilight clip was PAINFULLY boring! I would’ve changed the channel, but my friend is a twilight fan and wanted to see it. And even she was really disappointed. What exactly did they even show?? Was it a whole scene?? Was it a trailer?? Whatever it was…it was excruiating to watch. None of them can act and the special effects are TERRIBLE.

      • wino

celia, i said the movie was fun to watch. didnt say anything about the trailers. i just made a general comment that while HP is a superior filmed series, i also like the twilight flicks. big deal, if you dont like the movie, dont watch.

      • clay

Um, excuse me whino, but the big deal about watching the twilight movies is your contributing money to an unartistic slacker franchise, and if you keep falling for stupid films, your just an idiot who likes idiotic things rather than true art.

      • wino

oh, clay. i contribute money to a lot of stupid things, twilight should be the least of your worries :) btw, do you know whats idiotic, calling someone an idiot b/c they dont share your viewpoint. tisk tisk

    • Eddie

Voldemort vs. The Hogwarts Express. That scene better be devestatingly action-packed!!!

      • @Eddie

That wasn’t Voldemort, it was a random Death Eater stopping the train to kidnap Luna. ;-)
OMG I see a Best Fight contender next year. Death Eater vs. the Hogwarts Express.

      • Celia

I agree with Eddie. I don’t think it’s a random deatheater though. I’m sure he has a name. It kind of looks like the actor they cast to play Yaxley.

      • Ashley G.

yeah it looks like the person who was cast as Yaxley, and omg the dragon/ministry of magic break out looks amazing and not cheesy at all

      • tipsy

DE vs HE may be best fight contender but you know that Edward vs Victoria will win. It`s a no brainer. MTV targets Twihards and Twim oms and they won`t screw up their rating by letting anyone else win. twilight will win best picture 5 years in a row. And bucketload of other MTV awards. You know it`s true.

However, if DH 2 is really awesome and WB plays its cards well, Best Picture nom for the whole series, which is unlike anything ever (all those kids growing up through 8 movies, etc), would be a nice touch.

      • dizzy

Very true, Tipsy. I was looking for the Deathly Hallows clip on MTV and nothing. But sure, they had no trouble putting up the Eclipse trailer. The Deathly Hallows is everywhere but on the MTV website. How lame are they?

      • @dizzy

Exactly! If you go on their site now, they claim that they have the WHOLE show posted…but guess what part of that show is conveniently missing…the Harry Potter clip.

      • dizzy

Haha, I know. I watched the show online for the clip and nada!

      • Gabby

        poor luna :(

    • kaloalo

@UGH – if you don’t like either then why are you even here?

and DUH hp is totally better – it actually included lots of awesome clips that didn’t have some awkward scene with the most random lines stuck in it (like why in the world did bella just spew out “and you! why haven’t you called me?”) maybe the clips is just cut weirdly but yea weird random lines

and you made a mistake – the ginny/harry kiss is in the battle of hogwarts which will be out june next year so it probably won’t be in the ballot for mtv movie awards – unless they include it like they included angelina from salt – that was weird

      • Gazza

I think the Ron/Hermione kiss could beat Bella/Edward, but I don’t know how Rupert would react if that heppened…

And if they do the locket-destroying scene right, we could have a serious contender next year. I’m not one myself, but I wouldn’t underestimate the power of the Harry/Hermione shippers

      • Genevieve

I ship Harry/Hermione. lol It’s a really fun couple to root for. I just wish MTV would show Harry Potter some respect at the next Movie Awards.

      • Amy

Actually in the book the Ginny/Harry kiss takes place for his birthday cause she didn’t know what to get him for his 17th…I don’t think there is another kiss between them unless they add it in…

The Ron/Hermione kiss is during the battle of Hogwarts

    • Radu Ciobanu

Vampires don’t suck. Oh wait, the ones from ‘Twilight’ do.

      • Ali K

Too be fair, vampires do suck, since that’s how they feed. But HP will always be superior.

    • Melissa

Im a 25 year old mom of 2 and I LOVE Twilight movies and books!

      • Lo

        well thats not surprising.

    • Larry

Harry Plopper, because I don’t like Mormon propoganda.

    • Suge

Harry Potter, because I want to see Harry point his wand at Hermione and cast the “lesbianos” spell.

    • googliezoo

Unpopular opinion…I actually prefer the Twilight movies to the HP movies. This is simply because the HP source material is so superior to the movies and so dense that it’s actually really difficult to translate into film. The Twilight books are chick lit fluff. They’re fun if you can get past the appalling anti-feminist undertone. I find the Twilight movies much more bearable since they’re being compared to a much lesser source material than HP.

      • Laura

New Moon was unbearable. 60% of the movie was spent trying to express Bella’s depression – we get it, she’s sad. very sad. The rest of the movie was the wolf pack chilling shirtless in the forest with guilty looks on their faces (the scene screams gay sex romp, in my opinion) and edward creeping around. and the ending? ten minutes of staring then two words, black screen – wowwwwwwwwww, intense. stephenie meyer, you’re just SO talented.

    • divanzo

The whole Twilight series is just awful. Paint drying, grass growing, hair greying and their acting are all the same.

    • Muffy

Too bad Viacom removed the clip! I couldn’t see it.

  • lalala

Definitely Harry Potter. I’ve been a little tired of the Harry Potter movies of late, but this trailer seems more exciting somehow. Maybe because almost all the scenes shown are of them out of Hogwarts. And Ron doesn’t look like he will be just the goofy sidekick in this movie (liked his anger at Harry in the clip)!

    • tvfan

      So true.

    • JS

I also am looking forward more to Harry Potter, but the things you mention as good things are actually concerns to me. I thought the last book suffered without the Hogwart’s structure, especially in the first half where not much really happened other than just moving from place to place. While the 2nd half of the book more than made up for it, I’ll be very interested to see how they make the first movie feel even remotely satisfying as a stand-alone entity.

      • ani

agreed..the first half of the last book did indeed drag. all the feuding between ron and harry got a bit tiresome and that whole godric’s hollow debacle was tedious. regardless, love the HP books, like the movies, and looking forward to both Deathly Hallows and Eclipse (guilty pleasure)

      • Liz

I disagree I thought the first half was equally good. I liked that it built a lot of back story and it really played up the relationships between Harry, Ron and Hermione. The scene in the graveyard at Godric’s Hollow never fails to make me cry, when it says something along the lines of ‘The remains of his parents beneath the ground not knowing that he at that moment would prefer to be there with them’ it freaking kills me and really shows his desperation at that moment. LOVE ALL HP’s EQUALLY!

      • lalala

I liked the whole last book. I guess my thing about Hogwarts is that before, there was danger, blah blah, but the kids still had to go to classes and whatnot. So that’s why, to me, I found it refreshing when they stopped the “going to classes at Hogwarts” bit and acknowledged that hey, we should deal with this danger ’cause it’s more important the Hogwarts aspect.

      • @lalala

Hogwarts was very important though. Without it, the trio wouldn’t have met. They wouldn’t have learned all the valuable information that they know in book 6 (including all the knowledge they got from going to class). If Harry hadn’t taken DADA for 6 years, then he would’ve been in a lot trouble when it came to facing their enemies. They also would not have formed the relationships that they have. Dumbledore’s Army, which plays a big role in Deathly Hallows, wouldn’t have come to be.
I agree that the format in books 1-6 was somewhat repetitive, but I loved it. That made DH much more special, because we got to see them out of their comfort zone. At Hogwarts, all the answers were easily accessible to an extent, but outside of it, they were completely on their own.

      • @ani

We clearly read completely different books, because everything you just named had me on the edge of my seat.
        1. The beginning with the 7 Potters sequence and the Ministry break-in and Harry saying goodbye to the Dursleys and the wedding and Grimmauld Place, Kreacher’s Tale! All of that stuff was crazy and action-packed. We needed the more mellow camping scenes, because the beginning of the book was so action-packed.
        2. Ron and Harry only fight once when Ron leaves. Most of the time, Ron is busy taking his anger out on Hermione.
        3. The Godric’s Hollow sequence was one of the most terrifying things I’ve ever read in my life! I couldn’t even sleep after I read it. And how is Harry finally getting to see his parents’ graves tedious? I thought it was very sweet!

      • JS

I will admit that the beginning of Deathly Hallows with all the scenes you mention in your first point was exciting, but then (to me)the book seemed to get lost for a couple of hundred pages as they hid in the wilderness. The Godric’s Hollow sequence really wasn’t all that memorable for me, and I felt the book didn’t really find it’s stride again until the raids on Gringott’s and the Ministry. As I mentioned, the rest of the book more than made up for the slow patch (which I realize was necessary for setting everything up). However, in a split movie, I just don’t know how the first part can have a satsifying ending without going so far into the story as to leave very little for the last movie.

I’m also concerned that the cumulative results of the changes to the story made in the earlier film adaptations will result in a Deathly Hallows that is either is poorly put together or is unrecognizable to fans of the books. They’ve done alright with the movie series so far, however, so I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt on this concern.

    • kaloalo

yea i’m definitely excited about these two movies

the last few movies weren’t that enjoyable since they cut out so much and added in some weird stuff but since it’s the 7th book and they have to include almost everything i’m super super excited!
i’m hoping it’ll live up to my expectations haha

    • Celia

Ron is the comic relief in the books too. I never understand why people seem to think he’s all serious in the books and they make him into the goofy guy in the film. He’s like that in the books. Ron is immature, sheltered, and always making jokes. Hermione is the serious one who’s the brains behind the operation. Harry is the courageous one who sometimes acts without thinking. They all work together brilliantly. If Ron wasn’t so light-hearted, then the trio would be very depressed and slightly boring.

      • lalala

I don’t think Ron is all serious in the books, I don’t know how I gave you that impression. I know he’s meant to be part of the comic relief. It’s just that he had so much more to do in the books, and for most of the movies, he was relegated to “funny sidekick” with a lot of his storyline cut out. Most of the focus has been on Harry and Hermione in the movies. Only in recent films has he had more storyline (Quidditch, the whole love triangle bit). So that’s why I’m glad he’s getting more juicy bits in the later films. And since he’s more serious in the later books, it’s fit he’s more serious in the later movies, which I like.

      • Celia

@lalala: I don’t think they’ve cut any of Ron’s storyline out. He’s always in the background in the books too, which is why he’s always so jealous of Harry. That’s one of the reason he’s got this pent up anger at Harry in Deathly Hallows, because he’s tired of being the one who’s left out. Harry and Hermione are usually the ones who solve the problem, while Ron is usually clueless. Occasionally, he will get lucky, but most of the time Ron is the casual one who wants to leave it for later. They cut the quidditch stuff out of the OOTP movie, but they added it back in movie 6. I think Ron has played a major role in every film, in SS–the Chess scene…in COS–the flying car and the Chamber of Secrets stuff, In POA–his rat is the villain. In GOF–he fights with Harry and Hermione. In OOTP, he helps form the DA. In HBP, the whole movie revolves around him. If anything, Ron has more to do than Hermione. We don’t even get to see where Hermione lives or meet her family.

      • Karen

I agree that Ron is comic relief in the books, but I have always felt that in the movies, they take that to the extreme. And maybe a part of that has to do with the fact that they casted Dan, Rupert, and Emma when they were still kids, so they were told to play up their emotions. But at least up until GoF, they had Ron stand in the background and make funny faces more than contributing to the story; they’ve given Hermione a lot of Ron’s lines from the books in the films. Though as we’ve moved on in the series, and the actors got older, they’ve let Ron become an actual dynamic character for the films. Which I love, because he’s such a dynamic character in the books- whether he’s cracking jokes or standing by his friends, he’s lot more than “just” the sidekick.

Oh, and just to add, I don’t think we ever saw a lot of Hermione’s life because her parents were Muggles. They got to appear in PoA though, so we knew they were around. But I think it was just J.K. Rowling keeping up the theme of separation between the magical and non-magical worlds, not because Ron’s family was more important or anything.

      • @Karen

Hermione’s parents will be in Deathly Hallows, so I’m not worried about it.
But one that’s always annoyed me is that people claim Hermione was given some of Ron’s lines, but I can only think of one time that’s actually happened. Hermione talks A LOT in the books, so that’s why Hermione has so many lines in the movies. JKR has said she uses Hermione and Dumbledore to explain things when the story gets convoluted. The films probably have cut some of Ron’s lines, but I couldn’t tell you what. He doesn’t usually say anything of vital importance to the plot. I’m probably a little biased though…Ron has always been my least favorite of the trio, mainly because he can be such a jerk sometimes, especially to Hermione.

      • To @Karen

I can think of at least twice when Hermione got Ron’s lines.
        1. In Chamber of Secrets, she explains what a “mudblood” is, when in the book it was Ron. Given that she’s Muggle-born, she shouldn’t even know what that word means.
        2. In Azkaban, she tells Sirius that if he wants to kill Harry, he’ll have to kill them, too. In the book that was RON’S line and showed that he was actually braver than he’d been given credit for (he said the line while hobbling on a broken leg).
I know MANY HP fans who are especially bitter about #2.

      • Aislinn

There is a difference between “the lancer” and being the “comic relief.” Being the comic relief has nothing to do with how “lighthearted” the character is; it has to do with the presentation of the character. In the books Ron was taken seriously as a character and written as an actual human being with a bigger purpose than to make us laugh. Being funny was part of his PERSONALITY, not his PURPOSE. Huge difference there that WB is either too illiterate or too cliche-driven to see. Furthermore, Ron was funny in the books because HE was funny. He was witty and wisecracking and had sarcastic commentary for every situation. Movie-Ron is funny for far less flattering reasons; usually we’re laughing AT him, because he said something stupid or talked in falsetto or he’s scared of spiders! ZOMG LOL!

That said, Grint did effing well just in those three sentences in this clip. I’m a theatre minor, and anger is one of the hardest emotions to pull off, immensely harder than it looks. Rupert’s couple seconds could have literally been the entire sneak preview for DH and it still would have shown Twifail up so badly it’s not even funny. (Fine, it’s a little bit funny.)

  • Kisha

Are you serious!Harry Potter! There is a real story there not just a bunch of emoting.

    • Liz

The only reason I would even remotely say I was looking forward to Eclipse is to see some of Jasper’s backstory on screen. He’s kind of a bad@ss and the only character in the books that was a little interesting. I want to read books about him.

      • ani

eh, i think Jacob was the only character in the books that was interesting. He actually had a personality.

      • @Ani

Jacobs a whiny douche. All the twilight characters suck except for the Volturri.
But even Twilight’s villains are no match for Lord Voldemort!

      • syd

twilight was better than harry potter

    • dizzy

The results tell a different story and favor HP.

  • Lu

I’m so excited for Deathly Hallows! I hate when people compare Twilight to Harry Potter.
Harry Potter causes literacy, Twilight causes Idiocy!

    • Akane

      Totally agreed!
Last night I didn’t even bother watching the award show, I waited for this morning to see the only thing I was interested on watching and that is the HP trailer, it looks so great, and honestly you can see a big difference between the two movies, acting.

    • Mary

      LOL! So true!!!

    • Nicole

      sooo true!

    • chris

      hear, hear!
the literal quality of the books is NOT even worth comparing – it’ll be an insult to J.K. Rowling.

  • JJMMTT

this is possibly the dumbest question ever. the writing, acting, and overall production quailty of HP is a million times better than anything the twilight series can produce. HP, hands down.

    • leesia

      LOL! agreed.

    • springs

I know! I thought, “you really have to ask which is better?”

    • kurt

I wonder why they cast Rob in HP if he is such an awful actor like so many claim . The success of Twilight to get almost every award speaks for itself. { I’m sure most of it has to do with Edward} To compare these 2 Movies is a JOKE. If the actors of HP are so much better than Twilight I wonder why Rob and Kristen are going to play in so many different Movies they have lined up. I like HP and the Twi Books {not the Movie} but the Haters here are just disturbing. Some like apples some Bananas and they are some who like both. I never saw so many Title Pages or Coverage of almost anything other than TWILIGHT..even if there is nothing to talk about , it stays in the mind of a lot of Media. It just switches in covering the private lives of the the Actors. I hardly hear anything about Daniel Emma or Rupert except when a new HP comes out.

      • Blah

You don’t hear about the HP cast because they keep themselves out of the spotlight. They don’t mind that they’re not in the tabloids or that people are gossiping about them. They’re more into the work of films than the fame that comes with it. They’ve managed to obtain normal lives eventhough they’re part of a large franchise. The HP actors aren’t seen in other movies because it takes a year to film each HP movie. By the time they finish one film, they’re on to the next one. Each Twilight film takes 2 months and is filmed in such a rush. That’s why Rob, Kristen, and Taylor have so much time to film other movies.

  • Nerwen Aldarion

Ugh! Why why WHY do we need to start this battle? Many fans like both!

    • @Nerwen

Twihards complain about the comparisons because deep down they know there IS none. But I’ve seen plenty of them make comparisons when it’s expedient to do so (“Well Deathly Hallows split, so why can’t Breaking Dawn?!”).
I say, bring the comparisons on. All it does is make Twilight look even more pedestrian than it already is.

      • wino

You do realize there are many people out there that like the books/movies but are NOT twihards? right? right? It seems these silly internet “wars” are perpetuated by emo tweens (twihards) and nerdy losers (Potters).

      • to wino

Actually I thought they were perpetuated by EW to get clicks up.
I’d think I’d rather be a nerd than an emo teen. Nerds will (and have) inherit the earth.

      • @Wino

If i’m a nerd, then so be it…
but at least I’m a nerd with good taste. ;)

      • @wino

I’m so sick of that lame stereotype than HP fans are all “nerdy losers.” HP fans come from all walks of life. They’re rich, poor, all races, all ages, male and female. Everyone loves it, so I guess that makes everyone a nerdy loser.

      • G

wow wino you obviously dont know hp fans. like @wino said, we are all types of people that all appreciate harry potter for different reasons. The twilights fans, however, are just desperate moms (note: not all moms) and horny tween girls (again not all of them).

HP will be remembered as the series of the decade, and twilight will just be a lame fad that grew old

      • wino

umm, im a potter fan too. i said these lame internet wars where people feel the need to attack other fans are (usually) started by the OTT fan bases of EACH franchise. if you are not an OTT fan, then this doesnt apply to you.

    • Ambient Lite

Right. There is no comparison…in that they’re totally different movies from totally different book series. And I like them both for totally different reasons.

      • Lilly

        Twilight sucks

      • wino

thank you lilly for proving that some fans take this too seriously.

    • Jane

It’s like trying to make fetch happen…pointless and ridiculous.

    • Alrine

Yah…but I don’t understand why OTHER fans keep saying bad thing about TWilight saga: Eclipse//

      *Just don’t understand it”

  • nodnarb

That Harry Potter trailer looks epic. I kinda grew bored of them hanging out at Hogwarts, so this is refreshing.

    • Celia

You must not be a book reader. I agree the lack of Hogwarts is a nice change of pace, but I still love all the other films and books. If they hadn’t gone to Hogwarts for six years, then all the events that happened there wouldn’t have occurred and the story would be completely different. Hogwarts is a character by itself. Unfortunately, the next time we see it in DH part two, it will be getting blown to pieces.

      • Casey

Agreed. Hogwarts is a huge part of the series, and is essentially where all the action takes place.
Though that’s not the case in Deathly hallows until the battle.

      • noam

i love the books and hogwarts, but do agree that getting them out of hogwarts was a nice change of pace. one, because by not going to hogwarts, harry truly didn’t have a home and two, because if they’d gone, the seventh book would have been too similar to the fifth book, just taken to an extreme. (classes restructured to fit a regime, people being expelled, everyone unhappy, etc.) i thought it was a great ending to the series–harry returning to the muggle world (beyond privet drive), this time, though, seeing all the magic…

  • Katie

Seriously? I know you did this just to start a flame war.
Anyway, as someone’s who looking forward to both, I have to admit that the Harry Potter clip blew the Eclipse scene out of the water. Eclipse LOOKS good, but I can already tell that the script/acting are still going to be terrible.
HP gets the win alone based on Grint’s acting in what little was shown. You can already tell he in particular is going to be downright awesome.
I also thought it was a little tacky that the Twilight clip got a damn ticker tape parade while they got the HP clip on and done as soon as they could. Stay classy, MTV.

    • tipsy

HP trailer was exdtremly emotional. Eclipse clip tried to be but that`s impossible with the plank of wood that`s Pattz. Only Lautner injects some life in the movies. Pattz is really Deadward.

  • sm

91%-9% in the voting, potter rules.

    • @sm

      That 9% is:
      Mandi Bierly
      Nicole Sperling
      Annie Barrett
      Heather2
      Nerwen
      Ambient Lite ;-)

      • Ambient Lite

        Niiiice.
I enjoyed them both. Even though the beginning of the Eclipse trailer left me with a pang of disappointment, I’m looking forward to that one more (of course). Go ahead and give me 2% of the 9%. :)

      • Gillian

        Annie’s not a Twilight fan.

    • Liz

Uh oh, I just voted and it was at 89-11, Who are these 11% of people?

  • Kelsey

“Includes the inevitable runner-up in next year’s Best Kiss category.”
And this is why the MTV Movie Awards suck these days. Predictable to the point of being stupid.
Deathly Hallows hands down was the better of the two by every conceivable measure. In fact I think it was a mistake for the Eclipse scene to follow the DH trailer excerpt, mainly because Eclipse looked that much more ridiculous.

    • ron&hermione!

I think people are underestimating the Ron and Hermione kiss, people have been waiting for that kiss for almost 10 years, I think it might have the power to Bella/Edward more so than Harry and Ginny..

      • True

But Ron and Hermione won’t kiss until the second part opens, in summer 2011. So it wouldn’t be part of next year’s awards.

      • ron&hermione!

oh crap you’re right! Although Angelina was nominated for Salt this year and that is not out yet so you never know… Ugh still another year till the final HP movie, seems so far away!

      • celia

Ew couldnt just do the smart thing and write an article about how amazing the harry potter clip was. it was the only thing from that pathetic show that was trending for over 4 hours. This question is pointless because the HARRY POTTER clip was the best part of the whole show. I’ve already watched it like 50 times and im still shocked by how amazing it is. Just WOW. i can’t wait to see this movie. the acting is BRILLIANT! Not just for a potter film but in general, it just blew me away! AND DID SEE THE DRAGON!!!!!!! *faints*

      • jordan

don’t forget about the harry/hermione kiss that ron sees lol

      • @jordan

umm what kiss between them are you talkin’ about?

      • James

It’s not a “real” kiss. The horcrux versions of Harry and Hermione kiss to torment Ron. The real Harry and Hermione DON’T kiss. Unless they altered it from the book.

      • @@Jordan

In DH, when Ron destroys the locket horcrux, it starts to taunt him by producing horcrux versions of Harry and Hermione who ridicule Ron and tell him he’s worthless and that Hermione would never love him when someone like Harry is around. Then the horcrux Harry and Hermione make-out to piss Ron off. This is the scene that Dan is supposed to be naked in…no word if Emma will be naked too.

      • Cara

Well the Harry/Ginny kiss that’s shown in the clip also won’t be part of next years awards show because they’re standing in front of the staircase at Hogwarts, so I’m guessing they’ve added a kiss between Harry and Ginny at the battle. But if they follow the book they should have another kiss in part 1. And I would like to think that the Ron and Hermione kiss would beat Edward and Bella’s since people have been waiting years to see it.

  • two cents

Okay, I LOVE the Harry Potter books and I moderately enjoyed the Twilight series… but I have been disappointed by both film adaptations. It seems that Summit made one good decision when they bent to fan pressure to keep Taylor as he seems the only one in the series with a modicum of talent. It’s almost painful to watch Robert Pattinson in this clip. Kristen Stewart’s not much better. As for Harry Potter, I love the supporting players and there will never be a better character to actor realization than Alan Rickman’s Snape, but Daniel Radcliff is a weak Harry. He just doesn’t seem up to the high standards set by the rest of the cast. I still enjoy the movies (something I can’t do with Twilight) but it’s just a tad disappointing.

    • Liz

I agree about DR as Harry. I try to think of the movies as seperate entities from the books. That while some of the plots and characters are similar they are totally different. It makes the movies less disappointing.

    • Wiley

Same! I’m obsessed with the HP books, but I was watching the 6th movie the other day and I nearly fell asleep. Well compared with the Twilight cast, the HP cast can act, but when watching at a different time, I realized that Emma Watson and the girl who plays Ginny are really not good or believable, but the rest of the cast is infinitely better than the whole cast of Twilight. Now Twilight is just terrible. The acting, the makeup, the production, it’s all awful. I went in with an open mind to the first movie, and I was actually very very excited, and I left the theater thoroughly disappointed, and now I am definately a Twilight hater. Seriously, the movies contain some of the worst acting I have ever seen.

      • @Wiley

I agree with you about twilight, but disagree about the 6th film. I think it’s brilliant. It’s slower than some of the others, but it didn’t need a big action sequence at the end, because the main purpose of movie 6 is to set up movies 7 and 8. We didn’t need to see Hogwarts get destroyed in movie 6, because the same thing happens in Deathly Hallows. I love how HBP focused on the relationships between the characters, because Deahtly Hallow is so serious and Harry, Ron, and Hermione are no longer children. They’re adults who have to complete a seemingly impossible task, while they’re constantly being hunted. And I think Emma and Bonnie are just as brilliant as the other cast members. Bonnie isn’t the Ginny I pictured, but I still love her in the role. Emma is perfect as Hermione. I can’t wait to see what she does in Deathly Hallows, because Hermione plays such a huge role.

    • @two cents

DanRad is the heart of that character. No one else could play Harry Potter, but him.
But since you brought it up, I think Alan Rickman is weak as Snape. He’s never captured Snape’s maliciousness and vindictiveness in the films. JKR told him something vital about Snape when they first started filming, I think it was what we learn in The Prince’s Tale chapter of DH. That’s why Rickman has always played Snape kind of soft and very obvious.

      • Aislinn

Finally, someone who agrees with me. I like Alan Rickman a lot, but another problem with his Snape is that he is too sleek and composed. While Snape often was described as talking “silkily” or “sleekly,” he was also something of a loose cannon; when he got really angry he might even start shrieking or spitting. Can anyone imagine Rickman’s Snape actually doing that? Also, Book-Snape’s menace lies not just in his ambiguity as ally or foe, but as the blatantly unfair and bullying teacher from every student’s nightmare who could make your blood boil with his infuriating discipline/teaching techniques. These are minor quips compared with the gaping inconsistencies between the film and book versions of most of the other characters, however, so kudos to Movie-Snape for that.

      • @Aislinn

I agree completely, but I think Rickman does a brilliant job of portraying his own version of Snape. When I read the books, my Snape is always a mixture of Rickman’s version, a little bit of the Sheriff of Nottingham from the Costner version of Robin Hood, and some Hans Gruber.

    • pk

two cents, I agree that Daniel Radcliff is a weak Harry (thought he was good in #5, though). I also agree with Wiley that Emma Watson is not that good. She plays it overly earnest and shrill imho, and with none of the humor. I give her the benefit of the doubt by believing that this is how she is forced to play it in these rushed, butchered versions of the books (where Ron and Hermione are just bit players). Rickman is a very good actor but he is too old as Snape. The lead singer of Nine-Inch-Nails performing in a video dubbed over with DCD’s Cantara is my Snape. The actors that play Ron, Hagrid, Voldemort (including the kid that played the young Voldy), and Sirius are great. Sir Ian McKellen (Gandolf) would have been a great Dumbledore (he has those twinkling eyes). I understand that movies cannot be just like the books they are adapted from (the first 2 HP’s followed this formula and it was like watching 3 hours of actors reading from a script while paint dried), but the directors should have their own vision of how to translate to the screen while keeping the heart and soul of the story intact. The closest a HP movie came to that was the 3rd one, POA. The rest were just heavily edited versions of the books (although very expensive and well made heavily edited versions, unlike Twilight) and that is always a big fail to my mind. The scene where Snape killed Dumbledore is the biggest disappointment of the many HP movie disappointments. It was very rushed and Snape acted like a befuddled man in a trance. It was all very anticlimactic. The characters were the best part of the books (among many great aspects), and they seemed to be the last priority in the movies, behind battles with giant snakes and overly long quidditch matches (except, of course, in movie number 5, where quidditch was left out altogether but was so enjoyable in the book because it centered on Ron). The plots of all the books were fantastic (as were the special effects and sets in the movies) but 5 and 7 were my favorites because of the characters’ interactions with each other. Therefore, I am dreading Deathly Hallows because this is not a strong point in most HP movies. Eclipse, on the other hand, is going to be fun. And no matter how down with Stephenie Meyers many people are, she created really good characters (this wasn’t obvious in the first book, I’ll admit). Teen boys seem to be especially well understood by her, something she has in common with J.K.R. I think it’s funny that the some of greatest young male characters ever invented came from the pens of 2 middle-aged women.

      • two cents

I agree with you on several accounts. Michael Gambon has definitely been a disappointment as Dumbledore. He plays him way too angry. I remember being particularly upset with his portrayal in Goblet of Fire. Much more accusatory of Harry when his name is put in the goblet. As for Rickman, yes he is older, but I’ve never questioned his age, because to me he IS Snape. I think the problems with Snape have been more script and direction rather than acting. The whole bit in HBP where he shooshes Harry to keep him concealed in the Astronomy tower bugs me. To me he oozes impatience, disgust, and loathing of Harry and that is exactly what Snape should be. My other pet peeve was Lupin, who is one of my favorite characters from the book. I think the actor looks nothing like how I pictured him and he seems a little hinky. And as for what I said previously about Dan, I see moments of brilliance with his performance and then nothing. My co-worker loves his portrayal, but she was a movies first and then books reader, and maybe that’s the difference. I can’t really put my finger on it, but something is missing. I think it sounds like I dislike the movies more than I do, but a lot of little quibbles are starting to add up. I hope in the future the re-do the movies and do at least two movies a book starting with book three. They lost so much content trying to reduce these 700 page books to a 2 hour movie. They just can’t do proper justice to the books that way. Oh, well… still can’t wait to see the next two movies.

      • mia

never underestimate the power of the pen
        of middle aged women

    • MPH

I have always thought that Dan Radcliffe did so much better when he was angry. When the tantrum scene towards the end of OOTP was left out, it made me made. It was perfect for Dan and really needed to be in the movie. “Because I care about you too much” – come on!

  • JLT

Hands down, Harry Potter. There’s no contest really. Harry has better acting, better direction, better cinematography, and a better story. Can’t wait!

  • Heather2

    Oh sh*t. Not this again.

Well, considering that the clip from Eclipse is NOTHING like the book and makes a mockery of the entire E/B/J relationship, then I would have to go with HP.

    • Susan0204

I totally agree w/ you Heather2! Love the Twilight series BOOKS, but have been very dissapointed in the acting/scripting/directing of all the movies….totally runied what S. Meyer conveyed in her story-telling! And it def is not sticking to the real story line and is making a mockery of the entire series!

      • Gazza

actually, I prefer the movies to the books, though compared to HP…

    • Ambient Lite

My sentiments exactly – well the first part anyway!
The clip was not great, but I’m still looking forward to Eclipse…I’ll try to temper my anticipation with lowered expectations. I really hope they don’t completely blow it.

    • @Heather2

I’ve read those dreadful twilight books and while I don’t remember much of the very forgettable plot. The scene they showed was very much in the book. That’s not why it sucked. The actors can’t act. The storyline is pointless and lame. The special effects were unbelieveably bad. I mean seriously what is Summit spending the money on?? Clearly not the film.

      • Casey

        actually @Heather2
That scene where Bella just snubs Edward and goes on Jacob’s motorcycle from school right in front of Edward’s hurt face was NEVER in the book.
        Its extremely out of character.
As bitc* as Bella is in Eclipse by toying with both guys, she would never just jump on Jake’s bike with Edward right there like that.
Summit keeps trying to push the love triangle into being this epic “choice” that bella has to make, when really- Bella has already decided, and fans already KNOW who she’ll choose.
        Its extremely frustrating.
I suspect its to hype up TLautner.

    • pk

Heather2, I was also disappointed in the clip where Bella tells Edward that Jacob kissed her. In the book it was written with so much humor, and Charlie’s attitude toward Edward was perfectly captured. The clip was all seriousness, though I’m sure that’s how the actors were told to play it. Also, speaking to some of the other posters here (and even though I did not detect much of a personality and start liking her until the last book), imo Bella did not “toy” with either boy. She loved Jacob as a friend and he knew that but was giving it the old try anyway. (If I were to come up with examples of real life scenarios where males have toyed with females it would be more than could fill a million libraries.) Although it would have been devastating to him, Jacob could have chosen to just walk away. It was his decision to stay. Why is it supposed to be any less difficult and devastating for Bella to decide to walk away from his friendship?

  • Megan

What kind of question is that?! I like Twilight but Harry Potter is soooooo much better!!!

  • Ayn

I’ll most likely see both… I’m such a geek for this stuff; having said that, Harry Potter and the gang look top notch this round.

    • Liz Lemon

The Harry Potter trio always look top notch. I just love how they always get better with every film. You can tell they care and that they work hard. They’re constantly topping themselves.

      • Alissa

Yea, and did you see Rupert? Well, he wasn’t that good in te last ones… He seems to be acting really good!

And of course HP is waaaaaaaay much better than Twilight, and you know why?
‘Cause Ginny doesn’t look like a ***** when she sees Harry, and there is actually a true story behind the loooove and stuff. In fact, the ghoul on Weasley’s actic is much tougher than Edward.

    • Hope

the HP kids have something the Twilighters lack. Legit acting chops especially Rupert Grint as Ron. I totally can not wait to see his proformance in this. So excited. :)

      • kurt

Yeah this is why the HP actors are in so many new MOVIES. Ah I forget they are from England That must be the reason…lets see what happens next year at MTV Awards. After Rupert take GS from Rob …lets talk again.

      • Haha

Please, the MTV Movie Awards says nothing about the quality of a film or an actor’s work. It just says that fans will vote incessantly night and day for nominees that really don’t deserve it.
Oh, and Rupert is a great actor. He pretty much displayed that in the DH trailer.
