iPhone 4: Video calling goes mobile

iphone-g4Image Credit: AppleSteve Jobs unveiled the new iPhone 4 this afternoon at the WWDC conference, and while some of its features — like a front-facing camera — had been pretty much public knowledge for a while, there was still a big reveal: Video calling from your phone. It’s the future, guys! “FaceTime,” which works over Wi-Fi and only iPhone 4 to iPhone 4, uses said front-facing camera to great effect. The phone will be available for pre-order June 15 and ship June 24; the 16GB model will be $199, and the 32MB will be $299. Also, if your contract is up at any time in 2010, AT&T will fudge your eligibility so you can upgrade right now. The more iPhone 4s in the wild, the more FaceTime you’ll see — and presumably, the more you’ll want it.

The other big announcement in Jobs’ presentation: the iMovie app. The iPhone 4 can shoot real HD video, which you can then edit in the $4.99 app. (He also announced software updates, like multi-tasking and folders, that were part of April’s OS announcement.) The 5-megapixel camera goes well with the improved high-res screen, and a 3-axis gyroscope means the phone is even more motion-sensitive. (And it means apps can use a full range of motion for controls.)

Are you itching to upgrade, PopWatchers? Is video calling the final verse in the siren song pulling you to an iPhone, or are you able to resist?

I love that the camera now has a flash!

    • Jay

too bad the phone doesn’t support Flash.
Maybe, someday, Apple will be right and HTML5 will be the standard.
Unfortunately, that is not the case today. They are shooting themselves in the foot by not allowing this capability.

      Droid for me, thanks

      • Amanda

@Jay – how much do you really use flash on an iphone? is there anything on the phone that you couldn’t do because of flash? if there’s a video you can’t watch due to flash restriction, i’m sure you can find it on some other format. good luck with your second rate OS.

      • RyRyNYC

@ Amanda… Try going on EW on the iphone and watching embedded clips. I belivee that is check… and mate.

      • RyRyNYC

        or “believe” … lol. Whoops!

      • jordan

check the news. this problem will be solved by the end of the summer and by flash, not apple. it’s not like apple isn’t using flash because it wants to upset its customers, it isn’t using it because flash is too faulty.

  • Bob

Yawn, nothing intersting. Android for me!

    • Danielle

Oh, Bob, really the “yawn” goes to you and all the other “Apple haters” who diss everything Apple releases.

      • Rusty Shackleford

or more like you suckers who keep shelling out big bucks for new upgraded products every year or so

      • Tim

The simple fact is this will be wifi only. AT&T’s networks is so bad they won’t support video chat. Plus the HTC EVO is already doing video chat over 3G. So give me a break. It’s a slick package the Apple fanboys will buy as usual.

    • Nathan

Apple’s products are like Madden football games. Every year a new one comes out that is basically the same as last year’s but with one or two fairly insignificant new features. Big pass.

    • Dave

Droid crash, droid crash again, fn droid crash again. I never owned an iphone! I own a droid and it crash, it crash lots and lots and lots. And it doesn’t support flash either. Wait a few weeks until your droid is a good bit older and u will notice thousands of little glitches. 200 bucks and nothing but glitches. iphone may suck i don’t know. What i do know is droid does suck, it sucks hard!

      • DN

Could you butcher the English language any more? This is supposed to be for feedback on the new iPhone, that’s all. A lot of useless anger out there.

  • Diggity

I am getting one. Can’t wait.

  • Jay

Still doesn’t support Flash… so still dont want it.
    Dont want AT&T either

why do people like this thing again?

    • Sami26

I do wish more than anything that Verizon had the iPhone. I hate AT&T’s service.

      • Sydney

Same here! I hate that I’ll never have an iPhone as long as AT&T is only provider. Why can’t they provide service in SF, in Apple’s own backyard? geez.

      • PJM

I’d say 80% of the people who don’t own an iPhone and want one is for that very reason: AT&T’s crap service, which has only gotten worse. Apple could have taken over the smartphone world by now if they hadn’t signed that idiotic exclusivity deal.

    • Old Woman in a Turtleneck

Good question, and their laptops still don’t have blu-ray drives which was the deal breaker when I purchased a new laptop just a couple months back, wake up Apple!

  • d

oh man cant wait cant wait cant wait cant wait!

  • Ramo

So can you use the camera to Skype or it exclusively iphone to iphone videoconferencing?

    • Dave

They said that the protocol is “open,” which I believe means any app on the phone can use the front facing camera.

It might also mean that Android phones can have apps made for them that would connect with iPhone users for videochat…

  • Jonny

Yesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyes! I want it! I’m sure the Droid is a perfectly fine phone. Don’t care. The iPhone does everything I need it to do, and I’ve never had a problem with the service. The Droid could outsell the iPhone by millions. Don’t care. Apple products have served me quite well, so there’s no reason for me to switch.

    • Amanda

      agreed!

    • !

the droid isn’t outselling the iphone though

  • Maddi

If only it were on Verizon.

    • Jonny

On that I agree. Verizon and Apple should get together already. I’ve heard part of the problem is Verizon demands a certain amount of control over their phones, and Apple won’t hear of it. I say Verizon should trust Apple on this one.

      • RyRyNYC

Ummm, Verzion’s phones have all the features that the iPhone is just getting. I’d actually love to hear what Verizon would require from Apple… but I am going to buy this new iPhone (4) and jump ship at the end of 2011 to the Verizon iPhone.

      • Marly

Yes I really want Apple to change to a carrier who is up to date. I pay 30.00 ( required fee) a month to catch the internet on my iPhone and I don’t because 3G is not available in my are; So how is that my fault? I only could catch theI internet in a hot spot or at home and that really is a rip off. Apple you guy can do better, please change carriers; you already have proved that to us!

  • ltchy

HD video on a 5-megapixel camera?! THIS l HAVE to see… That being said, l LOVE my current iPhone and can only see them getting better. The Incredible looks pretty amazing, too. Might have to check THAT one out…

  • fireflystare221

As much as I like the iPhone, I agree, AT & T sucks. Therefore, I will stick with my BB (though I wish I had a Droid). I hope Verizon takes a page from the AT & T playbook though and lets people upgrade despite not renewing a contract. So annoying!

    • Jay

I’m pretty sure you can upgrade at any time, with any company, without renewing a contract…. you just have to be willing to pay full price for the phone.

      • Jobs Blows

So all I have to do for an upgrade is to pay full price for a new phone? What a deal!

  • Shiny

This would be awesome in high school but now all I can think is I have to get glammed up before I can talk on the daggone phone. Get ready to see some bleary eyed extreme close ups in the future.

  • Tim

I also want to see how HD is on a 5 megapixel camera. Atleat the EVO had 8. Why does Apple cheap out on things like that?

  • mlwinchell

Must have Must have Must have!!!!!

  • iggy

I’m pretty meh about the phone. However I do wish that Apple would find some other way to present new products than trotting out Steve Jobs in his turtleneck and dad jeans every 3 or 4 months with his smug “yep, we did it yet again” look. I know there is a whole cult of Jobs worshippers, but it’s time to find a new face for Apple.

  • Rebecca

    I am a loyal AT&T user and I still don’t care.

    • Ugly Jenny

I am the only one of my friends that doesn’t have an iphone and don’t plan on getting one anytime soon.

    • yo

      same here
