Kids go Lady Gaga on YouTube: Adorable or online video-sploitation?

Here’s the thing: I like kids (when they belong to other people), and I like Lady Gaga. Do you know what I don’t like? When these two otherwise happy universes collide, as in this latest of a remarkably vast online video oeuvre:

Memo to parents, in several parts:

1. By all means, document every move your kid makes, particularly every singing and dancing move. My parents did this when I was a performance-crazed kid, and if there was anything I liked better than singing Sonny and Cher songs, it was later watching myself singing Sonny and Cher songs. In my case, on some crazy reel-to-reel film that my parents had to actually set up a projector to watch … which they did, often, bless their hearts. (If you want to raise a future karaoke junkie, this is the way to do it.) However, just because the technology is now available to instantly make this video available to the public doesn’t mean you should. Record it, watch it, but keep it to your friends and family.

2. Related: Indulging in hair, makeup, costuming, and back-up dancers kinda takes the whole production from a sweet, impulsive outburst of kiddie musicality to … something that’s way more about you parents than about your adorable children.

3. It is my impression that you think it’s particularly cute when your children imitate the pop star-avant garde performance artist amalgam that is Lady Gaga, as opposed to a more child-accessible act like Miley Cyrus (despite her recent “scandalous” antics). It is not as special as you believe it to be. It’s actually borderline creepy, mainly because Gaga is.

4. I hereby call a moratorium on all “Telephone” parodies. You will never top the Afghanistan-based American soldiers doing it. I don’t care how cute your kids are.

But what do you think, PopWatchers? Kids doing Lady Gaga: Yea or nay?

Okay, it really crossed the line from borerline creepy to “it’s all about the mommies” when the scantily-clad back-up dancers showed up. Makes “Toddlers and Tiaras” look almost sane.

Miss Armstrong..I completely agree with you here! With #1, I think it is important to remind the parents that their kids are not making the choice to post this for the world so it’s quite intrusive as well. It is creepy and reminded me of that show about 4 year olds at those pageants. (Also creepy but unfortunately it has drawn me in on ocassion). Parents–think about your kids and whether or not you want to remove their freedom by posting without their permission later in life.

It should be the child’s choice to post not yours was my point..seemed like I lost it at the end.

And one more, I especially feel sorry for that poor little boy on the toilet that has to grow up with his friends being able to search that on the Net.

  • Lstat

Nay for sure. Way creepier than I expected. Poor kids

My parents filmed my brother and I singing “Goodbye Stranger” when we were kids (I have no idea how that happened) but they wouldn’t put it on YouTube had it been around today. I would have to wear a lot of Toddlers and Tiaras-esque costumes for all of my dance recitals, but my parents would’ve never let me wear what those costumes the Single Ladies kids wore. And my mom had a strict no-makeup-until-you’re-a teenager policy.

MY GOD! WHAT THA HELL IS WRONG WITH THOSE MOMS? THAT KID’S FAMILY IS THE WORST,
myself I have a 6 years old kids and a 3 years old daughter…both of them have watched some Lady GaGa videos, and they recognize some of her songs…
but I would never do to them what these woman make this little girl to do…
it’s kinda disgusting, I guess they are white trash..and that explain the whole thing..
It’s something related to education, culture and intellect every social class possess…
It’s impossible to isolate our kids from pop culture, but there are limits..
but liek I said before..this country like every other, has different social classes…and this indeed is something white trash people love to do. we can’t blame them, after all thanks to them we have waiters, janitors, workers…without any intention to sound classist. It’s like that.

This is also something that disconnected-from-reality rich people love to do. Consider the resources required to get a group of skanky backup dancers and assemble a variety of costumes. Check out that bar room near the end. This looks less like the product of what you consider white trash (and other people might more courteously refer to as blue collar) and more like out-of-touch rich people.

alright, all (or almost all) of the people involved in the creation of this video and in the production have degrees in musical theater and are performers on Broadway…they’re not skanks- they’re performers.

      • Gags

the back-up dancers look like they are strippers and the children are their own… just saying.

  • erik

and I am a 27 years old guy, very opened minded, liberal and balanced, like I am supposed to be for being myself a journalist…

  • dipshat

I’m sorry, but this is just disturbing.

    • avenger

+1–what the hell is wrong with these people. Is everyone trying to sell their souls for some 5 minute news cycle fame. Ewwwwww

  • JayNYC

I can tell you, I won’t be watching this video.

  • Tonya

Ick. I have kids. They love to set up the Flip and dance and sing. I would never ever post the stuff on youtube. I never share them online at all. Are these parents crazy? They need to be educated on what can happen to their children’s images online. Too scary.
