Jeremy Renner: Would he make a good Avenger?

jeremy-rennerImage Credit: John Shearer/WireImage.comJeremy Renner is close to signing on to Marvel’s Joss Whedon-directed The Avengers movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter. They say Renner would play Hawkeye, a villain turned Avenger, alongside heroes like Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (Chris Evans), and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson).

A comic-book flick might seem like a big jump from The Hurt Locker, the drama that introduced Renner to a wider audience last year. Is it really, though? Hurt Locker showed that Renner can play a complicated character facing the threat of violence around every corner. If one of Marvel’s band of superheroes reminded viewers of a guy from the bomb squad in Iraq, that might actually be a pretty good fit. What do you think? Is Renner a good fit for The Avengers?

Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye? Hell yeah!!!!

  • Erik

NO! Nathan Fillion! Come on Joss, make it happen! First!

    • Bob

No, Fillion would be a better fit as Dr. Pym. I like this as Hawkeye, it actually shows they are going to aim for quality in this movie

      • reel_deal

Nathan Fillion is rumored to be in talks already to play Ant Man

    • avenger

      Either way, both good choices

    • PF

I honestly don’t care who plays who. This movie is just a list of my favorite people on Earth. Joss Whedon, Robert Downey Jr., Jeremy Renner, and Nathan Fillion. I mean, honestly.

      • Marcel

I’m right ther with you, PF. It’s an ensemble of great people. I’m just SO excited.

  • trifoi

Jeremy Renner was also in one episode of “Angel”, so I guess he has good ties to Joss Whedon :) The movie’s shaping up to be great. Isn’t Josh Holloway also joining the cast?

    • Johnification

Josh Holloway was also in one episode of Angel, y’know. He’s one of the first vampires killed in the first episode.

      • AshleyBrooke

YES!!! I remember these both! I loved that show, lol!

      • avenger

Ahhh man, I love Angel references!

    • KEVIN

yeah but I think Holloway also wanted hawkeye, but I could be wrong

  • Annie

    Sounds good to me!

I agree. Hawkeye is a very complicated character, who is always playing the tough guy and challenging authority, but never forgetting he’s part of a team. Jeremy Renner has shown that type of charisma in the Hurt Locker, I’m sure he can pull it off in the Avengers. Make it happen!

  • Christopher

Renner is a slam-dunk as Hawkeye… the character’s unmasked persona is so little known that almost anyone could have played him, but I would love to see what Renner would bring to the role. I would rather see Nathan Fillion play the morally-challenged Henry Pym.

    • Ashley

I agree! I think Jeremy (as Hawkeye) and Nathan would both be perfect for this movie.

  • JAY C

Hawkeye is my all-time favorite super-hero. Loved Renner in the Hurt Locker. Hawkeye is a loose cannon antagonist who comes to love his leader (Cap) so this casting feels ideal to me.

  • Josie

Absolutely. I see no other options for Hawkeye

  • BlackIrish4094

Would never have thought of him, but he actually would represent Hawkeye quite well I think.

  • Owen

It would be great if he came out of the closet just before the film premiered. A gay man playing a superhero would be a very positive thing.

    • UGH

      …Uh, okay?

    • JesseDaGreat

a straight man playing a superhero is also a positive thing. What does it matter who you sleep with?

    • amber

he is not gay. believe me. besides anything he does, he will be amazing in.

  • Bobby’s Robot

    Yes please.

  • UGH

Josh Holloway just signed some “secret deal” with Marvel for one of their movies.
I wonder if it will be Hank Pym aka Giant Man/Ant Man?
He’d make a better Gambit although that character is tied up with FOX and their X-Men franchise.

    • Jose

I heard that Nathan Fillion will be playing Ant-Man in the Avengers movie, no idea what Holloway will do.

    • to ugh

That rumor was updated and revealed to be false….supposedly

  • Josh

How about lose the blandness that is Chris Evans and give Captain America’s role to Fillion. Isn’t Captain America more of a “grown-up” anyway? There should be a rule in Hollywood that allows an actor to only play one super hero. Seeing Chris Evans in another comic book role de-legitimizes everything. Also, adding Fillion would probably make this the best movie ever – even if Captain America is one of the lamest super hero’s ever.

    • lebeau

      One, Cap is awesome.

Two, Fillion as Cap would be even more awesome.

    • Fisher

I would think the crap that was fantastic four would have de-legitimized everything regardless of Chris playing Cap or not.

      • JesseDaGreat

yes it will de-legitimize the role he played as the guy who is able to start himself on fire and fly around battling evil.

      • Brett

Using Josh’s argument, casting Jon favreau as “Happy Hogan” in “Iron Man” and “Iron Man 2″ de-legitimizes that role ’cause Favreau was “Foggy Nelson” in “Daredevil.” Casting Mickey Rourke as “Whiplash” in “Iron Man 2″ de-legitimizes that role ’cause he was already “Marv” in “Sin City.” Jessica Alba shouldn’t have been “Sue Storm” simply because she had already been in “Sin City.” And, for that matter, what was “Frodo” doing in “Sin City,” leaping around like a silent homicidal maniac? I guess actors should only be allowed to play one role in a genre film.

    • Minutiae

Nathan Fillion is about as bland as bland gets. Unless you count squinting “snarkily” as “personality.” I never get all the hype around him. Average actor, average looking, not that great.

      • elena

        It’s a Firefly thing.

      • hoganbcmj

Totally disagree. Great actor, intensely hot and good looking.

      • Brett

He’s a moderately entertaining actor. “Great”? Remains to be seen, but not headed there based on his current body of work. Thought he was funny in “Slither.”

    • elena

Josh, you speak the truth. It still hurts me that Chris Evans is going to play Captain America when there are literally a BILLION people that could play the role better (one of those being Nathan Fillion. how can casting directors not see he screams Captain America?!). Not pumped…

      • Brett

Another problem with casting Fillion could be the fact that he’s tied up with a TV series. That could send his salary demands higher than Marvel wants to pay, considering they’re tying up these actors now for multi-picture deals, and they may also be concerned about availability for filming.

    • Brett

And once again, some “Firefly” fan cries out for Nathan Fillion to be cast in every role in which someone else has already been cast. “Fillion should be Green Lantern!” “Fillion should be the Flash!” “Fillion should be Captain America!” Let Fillion remain as “Castle.”

  • Faris

He will be perefect for the role.

  • Dory

That is excellent. Jeremy Renner is a great actor.
