Jim Carrey's 'I Love You, Phillip Morris' delayed for the umpteenth time: most cursed movie ever?

Love-Philip-Morris-EwenImage Credit: Glenn WatsonI Love You, Phillip Morris is making a convincing case for itself as one of the most cursed movies of all time. Originally screened at Sundance in January 2009, the indie comedy starring Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor was scheduled to be released this year in February… then in March, then April 30, then July 30, and now it won’t even make that summer release date due to a court injunction. In April, the French movie studio EuropaCorp, which produced the film, sued indie distributor Consolidated Pictures Group. EuropaCorp claimed that Consolidated had failed to pay a $3 million advance for the movie’s U.S. distribution rights. And now, according to Reuters, a California judge has issued a preliminary injunction preventing the movie’s release until the dispute is settled in arbitration. Consolidated is reportedly targeting October as a new potential release date.

In the movie, directed by Bad Santa co-writers Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, Carrey plays the real-life con man Steven Jay Russell, a married man who falls in love with his prison cellmate, Phillip Morris (McGregor). The film has already grossed $14.2 million overseas, where it’s been released throughout Europe and in Hong Kong, the Philippines, Portugal, Russia, Taiwan, and Thailand. And yet, fate continues to intervene and prevent American audiences from seeing Phillip Morris, which Carrey has stated was one of only three scripts he knew he wanted to do immediately. (The other two were The Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind).

PopWatchers, do you think we’ll ever watch I Love You, Phillip Morris in that building known as a movie theater? Were it not for its gay content, do you think a film with such marquee stars would be having so much trouble being released? And does its repeated postponements make you any more or less curious to see what’s being kept hidden behind the curtain?

looks great please come out soon!

    • Michael

I saw it in England, and it is GOOD!!! I hope it comes out in the USA soon so more people can see it! He and McGregor are such great actors!!! It’s funny and sad all together; audiences will LOVE IT!

  • Madd

OH COME ON!!!!!! One of the few films I’m actually excited for and it keeps getting pushed back!
Plus, I want Jim Carrey in a good film again. Man on the Moon, Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine….the man can act.

    • graeme

Love how people only equate “acting” with dramatic roles. The guy already proved himself to be a brilliant actor with Liar Liar, Ace Ventura, etc.

      • Johnification

I’d say his best comic acting was actually in The Mask.

      • Danny

Ace Ventura was over-the-top, but Liar Liar was undeniably superb comedic acting. No one else could have done that role–no one.

Though I agree with Madd, too, Man on the Moon, Truman Show, and Enternal Sunshine are the best overall movies Jim Carrey has been a part of. Liar Liar comes fourth, for me.

I hope we get to see this in its most true form. I know so much was cut already, but why pander to people who won’t see the movie anyway? Here’s hoping for a director’s edition DVD.

I saw it at Sundance in 2009 and it was crazy good. I heard that they were planning on toning down some of the “gay” stuff in hopes to make it more marketable to American audiences, did that end up happening? I look forward to seeing it in theaters (sooner rather than later I hope…)

I read an interview with Ewan Mcgregor and he said they did cut out a few scenes (one apparently was a funny BJ scene) to make it more acceptable for American audiences.

      • Stephanie

They also cut out a bunch of the kisses, from what I understand. The early Sundance reviews said they have long passionate kisses in the (prison)light of day and the camera does not cut away from that and their caresses. I’ve seen the film and they definitely cut those out. I’m dying to see those deleted scenes.

  • amie

I’ve been waiting on this too. I wish it would just get released already.

If Carrey thinks it’s on the level of “Truman” and “Eternal Sunshine”, then that makes me want to see this even more.

If it ends up coming out in October (or any time late this year), it could be a blessing in disguise since it’ll be in the middle of awards season.

    • Levi

      true that!!!

    • seen it

It’s better than Eternal sunshine and almost as good as Truman Show. Also, Ewan McGregor is so endearing I ended up loving him as well. The movie is part “Catch me if you can”, part “The Firm” with a healthy dose of “Priscilla queen of the desert” thrown in. Even if it doesn’t come out in theatres in the US I strongly recommend getting the DVD

      • amy

Exactly. Not only is Jim Carrey incredible, but Ewan McGregor is completely wonderful. I wasn’t particularly a McGregor fan before I saw the film, but he won me over, for sure.

      • Madd

Yeah, I’ve always been a McGregor fan, as well as a Jim Carrey fan.

      • Stephanie

I know. I loved Eternal Sunshine and Truman Show, but I gotta say, I think this just might be his best performance ever.

    • sharlin

films are only eligible the year they are released or anytime between the oscars. since this came out january 2009 in sundance and premiered in other countries, it is not elligible i believe.

      • ePastorJames

Wrong, Sharlin. Many films have premiered at festivals one year and been released in theaters the next: “Away from Her”, “Crash”, etc., and thus are still eligible for Oscar consideration. This seems more like a Golden Globe film to me, but we shall see.

  • Casey

I thought this was a financial issue and not about the content of the film.

    • Laurie

It is now, but the previous delays were mostly marketing related. Puritan audiences.

  • dee123

Really?? this movie can be seen in Russia & not in the U.S.

  • chaha

    its available to dl.

  • paula

I really want to see it. Jim Carrey in dramatic roles is amazing

  • Liz

DVD is already out in europe.

    • Stephanie

Liz, do you know if they distribute Region 1 dvds in Europe, so that we in America can order them online? They probably don’t, but I thought I’d ask.

  • albert

you can get on virtualy any torrent downloading sight and find a dvd copy to download and burn, or if you dont know how, every workplace has that “movie guy” just ask them.

    • Johnification

Maybe some of us don’t like stealing.

      • Stephanie

Well then you won’t like this movie’s content. ;D

  • Clayton

I’m really looking forward to this one. Hoping it makes it here.

  • lovesurvivor

Saw it, thought it was great. Jim Carrey does an amazing job…he’s very convincing in the role. I thought the “gay” parts were really tame. The story is outrageous, but true. Really enjoyable movie.

    • amy

Some of the earlier scenes were quite explicit, but in general it was more suggestive than anything.

  • MelindaB65

I’m betting it’s issues with hair. I mean, c’mon, look at Carrey’s ‘do in that picture! :-P McGregor’s is kinda heinous, too.

  • luiz

It seems clear through the comments here that the studios are only shooting themselves in the foot with all these delays, since the people who really want to see it are already able to download it illegally for free, so when (if) it finally comes out in the States they won’t do any business at the box office and then they can use those results to tell us all over again that clearly adults don’t want to see movies like this etc. etc…

    • mark

two guys kissing! i want to puke! just looking at the picturemakes me want to throw up. hollywood youwill stop at nothing – people hate you!!
