Captain America and Thor costume pics leak: Like what you see?

In a curious twist of fate that suggests either fanboy voodoo or (more likely) carefully-orchestrated secret marketing, two different films based on Marvel characters saw some of their apparent concept art leak out to the Internet today. Ain’t It Cool has a possible look at Captain America‘s costume, and Collider has the same for Thor. (America, breathe a sigh of relief: nobody looks like this!)

If you ask me, one costume is totally awesome, and one costume is extremely questionable.

The Captain America outfit looks incredible: it’s got that perfect retro-look, like a colorblasted paratrooper uniform. Even stuff that should look goofy (like the red suspenders or the brown man-boots) comes together well. Add in the kevlar-studded fabric, and you’ve got an outfit that looks like it actually serves a purpose besides looking cool. (One question, though: am I the only one who kind of prefers the triangle shield?)

I’m a bit more skeptical about the Thor outfit. Admittedly, this one’s the tougher job: the thunder god’s got a pretty checkered history with nasty outfits. (See here. Don’t ask why, it was the ’90s.) I understand why the movie would steer clear of the vintage Thor look, since it really requires Schwarzenegger-level biceps to pull off. But I’m not feeling the weird mishmash of battle armor and Matrix-y leather. That being said, it’s hard to judge without seeing what kind of digital effects they use on Thor’s hammer: it could look awesome, or it could look like a glowing hammer.

What do you think, PopWatchers? Will Captain America bring the chin strap back into fashion? Is it actually possible for capes to look cool when the wearer isn’t flying? Sound off below!

I still prefer Vincent D’Onofrio’s Thor look.

    • Hillary

definitely, especially once he was given his helmet

      • bobeies

you are a piece of work!

    • MsSuniDaze

This is the first image that pops in my mind when I hear Thor.

      • BA

I had to Google what you were talking about, and WOW. I had no idea that was him in Adventures in Babysitting. So cool! Loved that scene!

    • Laurie

One of my first pre-teen crushes. Yum.

    • James

Yes! D’Onofrio was so hot as Thor (actually he’s still hot to me in his current grizzly bear incarnation)

  • therealeverton

The Thor costume, which is mainly the j michael straczynski era Thor costume is pretty good if you ask me. It is NOT Matrixy leather at all. I think it looks good, from the real pics seen so far and the hammer, as seen at the end of iron Man 2 is pretty dark. Can’t wait.

Cap, well it’s a bit Ultimate cap and it’s probably as good as you can make that look. I guess he may have the triangle shield in early WWII stuff, but the round one is the iconic shiled really.

ARE there going to be any women superheros in this film?? Black Widow? Ms. Marvel? Wasp? Scarlet Witch???

      • fifty8th

Scarlett Johanson will play the Black Widdow in The Avengers.

      • Kristen

LOVE the Scarlet Witch! Can’t imagine who would play her tho. Thor’s costume image stinks. In the immortal words of Edna Mode: No capes!

      • Greg

Mary Louise Parker from Weeds as the Scarlet Witch!

      • therealeverton

There’s definately the Black Widow and I won’t be surprised if we see Wasp and another 1 or 2 female heroes. Thor certainly has Sif and some Valkeries in it too.

Scarlett Witch is tricky. If she was in The Avengers comics first she can be in; if she was in X-Men first then they can’t use her because Fox still hold the rights to all X-Men originated comic book Characters. Which I know makes for a wierd point with Wolverine who isn’t an X-Man originated character, but belongs to Fox anyway???

      • James

Elizabeth Banks would be good as Ms. Marvel (and I have to submit a request for Angela Basset as Captain Marvel)

      • Brian

Why would there be any female superheroes in the Thor or Captain America movies? I expect, or hope atleast, that Wasp or Ms. Marvel would be in Avengers but thats really neither here or there in terms of all of this.

  • Solomon

I agree with you Darren, I am kinda on the fence about the Thor outfit. The Cap America outfit looks cool though.

    • Mo

I don’t know, that costume looks like there should be a hammer and some screwdrivers and maybe measuring tape hanging from the utility belt, and it makes me picture Captain America driving a pickup truck. Although I’m guessing that’s what they were going for. Thor should totally lose the cape. And what’s with Chris Hemsworth looking so much like Will Ferrell in the second picture?

      • jujubeans

Captain America looks like he belongs on a Super Pages(TM) add.

    • Liz Lemon

Thor looks like he’s holding a giant popsicle.

  • Aliza

I like both the costumes. Thor’s looks badass, as does Cap. Tho something seems missing without the wings on Cap’s head.

and that circular shield is so iconic! when they showed a version of it in Iron Man 2 I freaked out. These pics make me so excited for next summer.

    • Jesus H. Christ

Cap needs the wings on his head, doesn’t look right without them.

    • avenger

I agree, both look soo awesome!

    • KingLion

No, Cap DOES NOT need wings on his head, this is costume is taking cues from Ultimate Avengers Cap, which does not have wings either. And the more they lean towards Ultimate-verse of Cap, the better.

      • BlackIrish4094

Ultimate Avengers suck, they should stay “classic”.

    • mary q contrary

I gotta tell you guys, I know you’re obviously fans of Captain America, and that’s totally cool (I was obsessed with She Hulk and Angela from Spawn as a kid), calling him Cap sounds ridiculous. I know you won’t stop, and I probably just really pissed you off, but I thought I should let you know.

      • Greg

I gotta tell you Mary, I know you’re obviously a fan of sucking, and that’s totally cool (I was obsessed with being a jerk and bullying as a kid), calling people out on the internet sounds ridiculous. I know you won’t stop, and I probably just really pissed you off, but I thought I should let you know.

      • mary q contrary

A fan of sucking, Greg? C’mon. You can do better than that.

      • Mo

No, no, Greg, if you want to get mary q well and pissed off, you tell her all the reasons Lost’s last episode suuuuuucked.

  • Joanne Paley

Ugh. Seems they both buy their stuff at X-Men By Singer Are Us

    • MB

      Yep.

  • UGH

To think Marvel got things right with Iron Man’s armor.
These are X-Men bad. Thor looks like James Hetfield from Metallica wearing Dr. Strange’s outfit.
Cap really needs wings on his helmet. Not real wings but maybe something airbrushed on the sides?

    • therealeverton

X-Men bad? You’re not one of the yellow Spandex fans are you? The X-Men costumes were pretty good movie hero costumes. All the better for Wolverine, and last criminal guy in Hancock taking the … out of them.

  • mark in nyc

caps looks great, and like it would fit in with WWII.
Thor does not look like a Norweign God but rather a guy in a costume.

    • therealeverton

Marvel’s thor has never “looked like” a Norse god; he’s always looked like what a Norse god might look like if it decided to wear a comic book super hero’s costume. Drawing on the straczynski era costume and adding bits of other Thor sostumes and original ideas I think they’ve done a good job of giving him that blend of acceptable movie costume and Norse Royalty / armour. And it’s armour and magic clothing (the Belt in particular) as much as it is “costume”. Add the beard and hair and I think they nailed it. Can’t wait to see him holding that hammer; or better still, throwing it.

  • LOL

Are these characters that were cut from Sex and the City 2?

    • therealeverton

Is that film as bad as it looks / is said to be?

      • LOL

It’s probably even worse. I’m not going to see it.

      • DaniVt

        It is horrible!

  • elena

Is it weird I’m still mad Chris Evans is going to be Captain America? He’s just…isn’t there someone outside the typecast that could have been awesome and played Captain America? Chris Evans…ugh.

    • therealeverton

I like Chris Evans and he’s a very underrated actor. I’m still not sure how he got to be Captain America though.

I still think it’s all a trick and in fact Chris Hemsworth is really playing Captain America (see his Kirk’s dad for why he’s perfect for the role) and Alexander Skarsgård (after some bulking up in the gym) is Thor. Evans, well he’s like Hank Pym (Giant man / Ant Man) or something.

      • mary q contrary

There’s no way Skarsgård could ever bulk up enough to play Thor. I mean, I realize that he looks very Norse, and he’s tall, but the similarities end there. Even after putting on some muscle, the guy would still be lanky, and way too pretty.

      • therealeverton

Have you seen Hemsworth? or Christopher Reeve prior too much bulking up for Superman? They aren’t doing the Balloon muscled “old School” version of Thor, hence the “modern era” costume influence and the lack of “bulky” looks for Hemsworth. It doesn’t take a lot, especially if you’re an actor and all you have to do for 3 months is exercise and eat weight gaining food. Hemsworth is not comic book bulky. I happen to like him as Thor, (and Skarsgård could very easily look big enough in that costume) I just happen to think he was near perfect in looks, voice etc for Captain America. That being the case I throw in who I think could have made a good Thor if Hemsworth had been switched to Cap. with the list of actors who have bulked up considerably for specific roles from Edward Norton in American History X through DeNiro and even Will Smith, (the definition of skinny and Lanky in his Fresh Prince days to various levels of Bulked up / toned up from Independence day through Ali and I Robot etc, I can see that being a very simple fix.

I’m not having any Problems with Hemsworth as Thor at all, just doing the alternate reality casting. Tom Seleck was Indiana Jones, Eric Stoltz as Marty Mcfly and Will Smith was Neo. Will Smith as Captain America would have been very intersting too; although the cons / difficulties probablt just outweighed the pluses there.

      • therealeverton

Oh and Thor is “Norse looking”, “tall” and Pretty. The only missing ingredient is ,relatively” Muscly. That’s the only difference, and it’s one Hollywood PTs and dieticians fix every week for movies.

    • KEVIN

Nah….Chris Evans seems like a good guy, I think he has earned this

    • MaxPowers82

Anybody who has any doubts about Chris Evans as Captain America needs to watch him in Sunshine and forget about all the rest of his movies where he just plays the comic relief.

      • Nelly

I agree. His performance in “Sunshine” totally surprised me. That movie and “Fierce People” give me hope for Cap.

If you can watch “Fierce People”. The part when he reveals his character true colours it’s amazing. When I was watching I couldn’t believe Chris Evans could deliver such a good performance.

  • Hungarian Mango

The chances are that the only cool thing about either of these characters in the moviel will be the costumes. Iron Man was a holywood fluke, Holywood has a track record of taking great illustrated novel super heroes and turning them into morons.

    • therealeverton

Often true, but not always. More importantly these films are not “Hollywood”, they are being made by Marvel themselves, Just Like Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk; which were not flukes. They are exactly as they set out to be, because they aren’t Hollywood and there’s a massive multi film strategy being played out. That doesn’t guarantee success, but it does give both of these films more than a fighting chance. After seeing Thor’s Hammer in that crater at the end of Iron Man II I coukdn’t wait to se the Thor Movie.

Thor, Cap Iron Man Hulk; or another way Downey Jnr, Norton, Samuel L Jackson, Scarlett Johansen, Chris Evens and more all in one, well crafted movie(s), it’s something to genuinely look forward to. Mostly because it aint Hollywood and there’s a genuine faith in the characters, source material and film makers. Unlike at say Fox’s cheap as poss and as quick as poss superhero factory.

      • Irina Hoke

But The Incredible Hulk was not a critical or commercial triumph. It was a way-too-soon reboot that made almost exactly the same amount of money THE HULK did, and got the same mixed reviews. In the end it was a pretty forgettable film that didn’t manage to do anything but make MARVEL spenda whole lot of money ona film that coule barely break even, and didn’t leave any kind of mark on cinema on moviegoers.

      • BlackIrish4094

Yeah but at least the Incredible Hulk wasn’t so artsy fartsy as the Ang Lee Hulk plus stayed truer to the character mythos.

      • Brett

The Hulk reboot wasn’t a flop, but it didn’t get “Iron Man” or “Spider-Man” box office numbers.

      • therealeverton

Actually it’s considered both. The film was much better received by the public, and you could expect those who stayed away because the 1st was so poor (in many people’s opinion) to turn up for a sequel to the 2nd film. Also it fulfilled its main purpose of having a credible, likeable Hulk for The Avengers. It also did better with critics. DVD sales were also much better. Sure they would have liked to make more money, but given the level of hate the previous Hulk film enhendered with the public, and many fans, it was seen as a good thing that it managed too erase that AND make a decent, if unspectacular, amount of money.

  • Eric

    Team Thor…..
Er…sorry. I was trying to get back at the women and their awful fondness of Twilight.

    • mary q contrary

I’ll say it again. I hated Twilight, but I love the smell of comic shops, and the way pulling a sleeve off a book for the first time feels. You’re a sexist pig. Does that work better for whoever was childish enough to get offended by my equation of this idiot resembling a part of the male anatomy?

  • ObiHave

I can live with both of them. I’ll wait for the movies to make my final critique.

  • Christine

They are so photoshopped I can’t stand them.

    • therealeverton

Theyu are no substitute for actual photographs that’s for sure.

    • mary q contrary

agreed. I couldn’t figure out what the hell was going on with Hemsworth’s hair and hammer, and don’t even get me started on Evans’ cartoonish appearance.

      • Kiare

It’s a photorealistic render- a replacement for a sketch. NOT ACTUALLY THEM.

      • Kiare

Yikes. Bad place to hit capslock. Bad Kiare. No Cookie. Seriously though, it’s just a replacement for a sketch of the costume design. I wouldn’t get worked up over it not looking like them when it’s just a way to give people an idea of what the costumes will look like. The Thor costume seemed like the “chain mail” will be darker- so probably Cap’s will to. The details are probably lightened up to be more visible.

  • Lana

The Cap’s looks great. The Thor outfit looks good on the top, but too conservative on the bottom. It needs a healthy dose of lighter blue.

  • Richard

They are not photoshopped because they are not real pictures, hence being concept art as in paintings not photos.

I think they both look great and for those concerned that Thor’s pants are leather, the designer confirmed that they are cloth, which is hard to portray in a paiting. Thor is a sci-fi fantasy comic so the blend looks perfect!
