Hope Davis joins Hugh Jackman in robot fighting film 'Real Steel': What? And awesome.

hope-jackmanImage Credit: Chris Hatcher/Photorazzi/PR PhotosHope Davis has been added to the cast of Real Steel, the DreamWorks film starring Hugh Jackman that is described by Variety as the following: “A sci-fi actioner about the new sport of robot boxing, Real Steel revolves around a former boxer who gets one last shot at a comeback when he teams with his long-lost son to train the perfect contender for the high-tech sport.” What is she playing? It doesn’t say, because really, does it matter? “Real Steel.” Hugh Jackman. Fighting Robots. That is all we can comprehend at this time.

That said, let’s make a list of demands for this movie, which will be directed by Shawn Levy (Date Night, A Night at the Museum). I’ll start. Feel free to add on:

1. The movie is called Real Steel, and Jackman is playing a former boxer. I don’t care if it’s the robots doing battle, he must be sweaty and in a wifebeater for at least 50 percent of the film.

2. A throwback ’80s-style ballad must be played over the closing credits. ThinkĀ Over the Top‘s “Meet Me Half Way” by Kenny Loggins.

3. While we’re talking music, hire Bon Jovi to compose the score. Robot training montage + Richie Sambora’s talk box? PERFECTION.*

*Not sarcasm. Totally serious. I will be seeing this movie.

I’ll see anything with Jackman. AS for the Bon Jovi and Sambora love? Uhhh….okay?

Trying to set aside his looks to be serious. Jackman’s acting ability actually raises the quality of any motion picture including ones you wouldn’t see otherwise.

I’m a Jackman fan, but isn’t this the same thing as Robot Jox?

Ok, Hugh Jackman… YUMMMMMMMMMMY!!! I don’t even care if the movie totally blows, I’ll wear earplugs as long as I can watch him on the big screen!!

No need for Sambora’s squawk box… Maybe Rob Zombie could do a song or two for the fight scenes? His heavy, dark music would be great for robots and fighting and a sweaty HJ…

Actually, they should use that song “Everybody Was Kung-Fu Fighting” and just change the lyrics to “Everybody Was Robot Boxing.” Also: will the film feaurure robotic versions of real-life boxers? This would give all-new meaning to the nickname “Iron” Mike Tyson.

I may be in the minority, but I’d really rather see Hugh Jackman in non-action roles. I know the X-Men movies are the most popular, but he’s so talented and has such range, the too-muscular-growling-no-real-story deal has already gotten old for me. Maybe his character in this will be different if he’s a *former* boxer, but the movie itself doesn’t sound very interesting. – He does have several other movies in the works that look like they have more to them, though apparently those aren’t getting any play here on EW.

As much as I liked Australia, they went the whiplash and bodice ripper route rather than a really epic dramatic movie. The cast rose above the script, but with an iconic character like “The Drover” they could have taken him from Galipoli to modern era in a trilogy that truly reflected history and Jackman would have torn up the screen with the role.

Agree with B. Not that I mind watching Jackman in action movies but I think he’s an excellent actor and should make more ‘serious’ drama films. Take on more demanding roles. Not just action.

True but, oh, the eye candy!

I’ve seen him in both his Broadway shows and I love him in action/drama films…I’ll definitely be seeing him in this too. Bring on the robots!

And I love Bon Jovi too, so let’s hope someone takes that suggestion under serious consideration!

Hugh Jackman is sexy, talented, and the movie sounds interesting. From the Twilight Zone script, I saw that long ago and liked it alot. I will see this movie 100% sure. The cast is good too, so maybe Hugh will show his true acting chops rather than just action.

The movie Australia is definitely my favorite of Hugh Jackman. I have all of his movies on DVD and will continue to collect them all. I have to admit that I watch Australia at least twice a week. I think he is a brilliant actor as well as a great human being, father and husband. I don’t think he’s perfect by any means, but all men could learn from him.

  • Droversgirl

By the way, I got a little off the beaten track there for a minute….I think Real Steel is going to be GREAT!!!!

  • Jamie

Thursday morning on the SyFy channel, the Twilight Zone episode “Steel” will be on. This is the basis for real steel.
