Conan O'Brien at Radio City: Stephen Colbert challenges him to a dance-off, Jon Stewart ends up shot. Watch!

Conan O’Brien brought The Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television Tour to Radio City Music Hall Tuesday night for the first of two performances. By far, the evening’s highlight was the surprise appearance of Stephen Colbert, who came out onstage to rib O’Brien for leaving New York to do The Tonight Show in Hollywood. You’re gonna wanna watch the audience-filmed video below. If you can’t view the video, we’ve got your play-by-play.

Their verbal tiff quickly escalated: “We’re at Radio City, there’s only one possible way to fight here,” Colbert said with his face literally in O’Brien’s face. “Anything that gets us to separate our noses and lips,” O’Brien answered. “How about a good old-fashioned dance-off?” Colbert suggested. Cue “Pour Some Sugar on Me.”

I would say Colbert was winning until he ruptured his hamstring. He was about to admit defeat when — “Don’t you dare, Stephen Colbert! Don’t you dare! Don’t you dare!” It was the voice of Jon Stewart booming from the back of the theater. (Even those of us in the last row of the second mezzanine who couldn’t see him knew it immediately.) Stewart walked down an aisle to the stage — wearing a red satin shirt, black pants, and a gold cummerbund — as the audience exploded into a standing ovation. The fan reaction caught on this video says it best: “Holy f—ing s—!”

“I will be your legs,” Stewart said.

“Jon Stewart, how did you know that I was wounded?” Colbert asked.

“Stephen Colbert, you know that I feel what you feel. All you have to do is think about my help, and I will be there dressed rather gayly,” Stewart said.

Stewart asked for a beat to finish the job, and more dancing ensued… until Andy Richter came out and shot Stewart. Then, we got a touching death scene that ended with Colbert kneeling by Stewart and saying, “Jon, before you go…. Can I have 11 o’clock?” Colbert then dragged what O’Brien referred to as “the dead Mexican Jon Stewart” off the stage as Stewart flashed a smile and a pair of finger guns.

All I can say is that the gloriously unrehearsed bit by the future time-slot competitors makes me wish my dream of Stewart at 11 p.m., Colbert at 11:30 p.m., and O’Brien at midnight on Comedy Central had come true. I love New York. And how exciting is it to see Colbert in jeans?

    • maiv

Man! I went to his San Jose show, and there weren’t any special guests at all. But I guess it was just SJ…

  • bronxmom

    GD this was funny!

  • Jenn

    That was great!

  • RobbieC

I laughed so hard I cried. And then Paul Rudd came and I feinted.

This video makes me wonder what it’s going to be like in November when TV has a “friendly” late night war. Will there be inter-network sparring? Cameos? It could be huge for the ratings of both sides. Such a refreshing change from the coldness of the network late night war.

  • Marph

So funny! Wish I could’ve been there in person.

  • Elizabeth

I am sad that Stephen dances like my dad :(

I love it when the three of these guys play together.

  • Janice

I have tickets for his Atlanta show – I have no idea who he’ll get to appear with him. Hoping for Elton John, but who knows if we’ll be that lucky.

  • Adam

Also, Vampire Weekend played a song and there were appearances by Bill Hader, Paul Rudd and John Krasinski!

  • Peter

These guys are funny, but that’s an awful lot of talking over each other and laughing at themselves.

  • Dawn

I wish I could’ve been there! Funniest thing I’ve ever seen!!

    • Eko`

That was the funniest thing you ever seen…really?

      • otom

Its called a “figure of speech”, moron. You needn’t take it literaly.

  • MrsBug

He just played here at MSU and a friend said it was the best comedy show she’s ever seen. He sold out the venue.

  • John

Conan needs a LOT of help to put on a show. A good comedian could do a show all by himself.

    • cj

john, conan’s humor is a little more subtle and leans toward the absurd. the unwashed masses can’t handle that. however, his fans are on average more educated and intelligent than leno’s fans. so do with that information what you will…

    • April

      There’s always one

    • Grrr

Yes, John, we are all very disappointed that Conan doesn’t make people on the street look like idiots by asking them 8th grade History questions like a true comic genius… *eye roll*

      • on street idiot

        hey! i resent that!

    • Peter

Can’t a guy criticize without being a Leno fan? I think all three of these guys are funny, but this video looks like a bunch of frat boys goofing around. Is foppish dancing and talking in fake dramatic voices really worth paying money for?

      • RyanK

Is it really worth my time answering this question when we all know the answer is yes?

      • Peter

If you say so. To me, it looks like a bunch of guys who know they’re adored and anything they do will kill, so why bother putting forth effort. Their self-appreciation rivals radio DJs yucking it up over their own jokes.

  • Jeff

I’m still hoping for a DVD best of compilation of the tour.

    • Quirky

Yes, I would totally buy that.

    • Lizabeth

      Me too.

  • Melissa

WOW…Three biggest names in comedy. I feel as if I should have payed somthing to watch that.Good stuff…
