'America's Got Talent' tops 'Glee' with its own New Directions

new-directionsThis is a choir called New Directions. And last night, they beat a diiiiifferent choir called New Directions: The season premiere of America’s Got Talent topped Glee in the ratings last night, averaging around 12 million viewers to Glee‘s 9. Maybe this ensemble of formerly homeless veterans can teach Rachel Berry a thing or two about determination and perseverance.

Did you watch AGT last night, PopWatchers? Who are your early favorites?

Nope they can’t teach Rachel Berry anything. She’s still the queen and the best performer around :)

  • alex

well, that’s disappointing. Not the former homeless verterans persevering, but that America’s Got Talent beat out glee.

    • KS

Ah yes, poor Glee. So tragic.

    • Alia

It’s not too disappointing, alex. I watched glee last night. It wasn’t their best episode by any stretch of the imagination. I love the show, but I’m starting to get Glee fatigue. I’m glad the season finale’s next week.

  • Nessab

Amazing! They need to put them on Glee to really get that message across. Such talented people.

    • LAMusic

Now THAT would be epic! I can visualize how that whole story line could go down. Will Shuester (sp?) could take them on a field trip to ‘New Directions’ to teach them all a life lesson and get them to stop whining about how disadvantaged they are. I can see each one of the Glee kids coming away with something. Kirk’s dad could be the impetus for this. He looks like he would have served in the Armed Forces.

  • Leah

I watched AGT last night. I liked them and I liked the guy at the end from Mississippi who wants to win so that he can get his grandmother out of a trailor park. His voice was AMAZING!!

    • ps in seattle

I totally agree! He was probably my favorite. There seemed to be such a melancholy about him, I hope he does well. The only other act I really liked was Future Funk, the two young dancers at the very beginning. That’s some amazing technqiue for ones so young! They were also very poised.

    • seattle_girl

Ahh, me too. Michael Grimm, I think. I looooved his voice. Was surprised the judges didn’t have more of a reaction when he finished. Dude should be recording now.

  • Ugula

Wow, that was heartwarming. And they don’t have the privileged arrogance of Lea Michele, which makes it even sweeter.

    • Alia

Privileged arrogance? That rumor’s not true, folks. I’ve met Lea Michele, and she’s a very sweet girl.

Back on top, though… I loved this performance. Very impressive, as well as moving. Well done, Vets!

      • Alia

Meant “back on topic.” I think I got distracted mid-word.

      • maiv

I think it’s very interesting how you judge someone I doubt you’ve ever met.

      • Johnification

And I know actors who’ve worked with her, and yup, it’s the truth. In fact one of them can’t even watch Glee because she says Rachel Berry is just too similar to Lea Michele in real life.

      • Frank

Johnification -Sounds like that person has the problem I don’t see what is wrong with Rachel Berry. LM seems to have a lot of friend who she has worked with too.

It would be nice to believe that more people are becoming aware of what happens to our military members when they come home.

    • sam

I should say, to “some” of our military members.

    • L.Styles

Sam, read your comment and have to say thst as a Nursing Assistant with the VA, today’s troops won’t have to go thru what this group did. There is help out here for them, they just have to ask! I know that’s hard to do, but speaking from personal expericence you can come out on the other side! There is a light at the end of the tunnel!

  • Lu

I have tried watching Glee every week because everyone talks about how fabulous it is but I’ve never made it through a full episode. Definitely prefered AGT & Wipeout to Glee yesterday,.

  • Katja

Curse you, AGT! I stopped watching this show forever ago because I kept getting annoyed by the obnoxiously stupid acts that would make it through each round… but I watched that clip and as soon as the concept of “homeless vets getting their lives together” was expressed, I started fighting the mistiness rising in my eyes and the trembling of my chin. When the man said that it’s okay for warriors to seek help, I absolutely lost it. Just typing that made my tear ducts re-activate. They’re a lovely choir. (Though on a heartless technical note, there was a small amount of what Randy Jackson might call “pitchiness” happening, and the highest voice was sort of overpowering and not as solid as it could have been. But who cares about that when they are living heroes through their service to the country and their fellow veterans?!) Now, where did I put my tissue box?

  • melo1

The best part of last nights show, was the addition of Howie Mandel, to the judging panel!
I found myself laughing out loud on several occasions on his responses to the acts.
Never did with Hassel or his ego.
He’s made the show a bit more refreshing.
Seemed tho, Peirce (sp?) was a bit put put off by it all. He seemed WAY to serious Upstaged perhaps?
A Simon Cowell he is not. Lighten up!

  • Tom Cox

AGT is entertaining!!! I think Howie is a great improvement!

    • bill

getting rid of Hoff and springer brought this show to the top of my list. Watching Nick during the acts is a great comic relief

  • bamalam

Why does it seem as if the only talent “America” seems to have is someting to do with music. I understand the ease of it when it comes to changing it up every week…just do a new song…but it honestly seems as if the final 5 each year is someone playing an instrument or someone singing…kinda boring really.

    • Jethro

Definitely agree, way too much singing and not enough other acts. To think that last years Chicken Farmer won over the Fab 5 Sisters who clogged their way in the final 10, can easily build a Vegas show from their phenom type clogging. The chicken farmer (winner, I still gringe} had as much personality as a door knob and to think that Vegas will build a show around him is not worth attending.

Last night we did see a variety, the 5 and 9 year old dancers; the dancers with the snakes around them; the woman in the cat suit who painted her portrait I know this sounds weird, but she was good; and the French dancer were really good. But since Piers, Howie and Sharon will pick the final acts, it usually comes down to mostly singers. If I want singers, I can watch AI, AGT is suppose to be just that, talent from all genres, not just singing.

Thank God Big Brother starts on July 9, at least 3 nights a week will be devoted to BB.

      • LAMusic

Didn’t a ventriloquist win a couple of seasons ago? As I recall, he was pretty remarkable.

      • kitty

In all fairness, not all singers are eligible for AI – their may be different age or different genre. More variety would be nice, but overall it should be best talents, not best sob stories.
@LAMusic – the ventriloquist sang. But he was probably the best talent these shows ever had in that he was great in his genre and he sang well and he was perfect as a Vegas act.

  • straper

    Disappointing!
    Howgno!

America’s Got Talent was awful last night! But finally, after an hour and 55 minutes they finally showed us a guy with real talent. The vets group were pretty good too and were very inspiring. Overall it was train wreck after train wreck of misfits.

  • Terry Morgan

Wow I loved it.From fighting for our freedom to fighting to win something they you lost selfworth. Your group is Priceless. Keep up the great work you are doing (Changing Lives)Terry with The Arms Forces

  • LAMusic

SInce AI is over, I completely forgot about Glee. In fact, I forgot about television completely.

However, I did turn it on and happened to be tuned to NBC and America’s Got Talent’. About 10 minutes in to my watching that super-cheese show, ‘New Directions’ came on. I have to tell you, I was moved by them. They were fantastic and are sure to be a fan favorite. I’m hoping they go the distance and take it all. As someone in the audience shouted, ‘We love you, Veterans!’
