'Scott Pilgrim vs. the World': New trailer reveals an awesome supporting cast

A few months back we saw the trailer for the Michael Cera flick Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, about a geeky bass guitarist who falls head over heels in love with a girl who has seven “evil exes.” The movie looked like the typical Michael Cera brand of awkwardness, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. But the studio has now officially won me over with a new, expanded trailer that gives a peek at the supporting cast. Who do we have? Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation), Jason Schwartzman (Rushmore), Allison Pill (Milk), and Kieran Culkin all pop up, upgrading the movie from “I love Awkward Michael Cera!” to “Okay, I gotta see this!” Check out the trailer below and see for yourselves:

    Her?!
Kieran Culkin was great in Lymelife.

Not sure how you can make a list of the great supporting cast without including Egg, but they did it.

      • Madd

        You mean Plant.

    • LOL

      Anna Kendrick, too! Woohoo!

  • Elizabeth

Yes… as my sister and I discussed, we are ‘contractually obligated’ to see all Michael Cera movies, but the supporting cast is just as fun. Yep, I’m in.

  • Sarah El

My doubts about this movie may still be present, but this really is an awesome trailer.

  • Ceballos

It’s cool to see the rest of the cast, but I actually liked the original, fake-out trailer a bit more.

In a semi-related note (though I absolutely LOVE her on “Parks and Rec”), how much longer until we call out Aubrey Plaza for giving the same apathetic, monotone performance in everything? (The same way we eventually called out Michael Cera for giving the same stammering, tentative performance.)

    • Connor

Have you read the comic? The character she plays is an apathetic character.

  • Darrell

Dear Michael Cera, you were great in Arrested Development…but you are now playing basically the same character, George Michael Bluth, in every movie you’re in…please go away for a few years, because we’re getting really tired of the same old act…you can only come back for the Arrested Development movie…

Dear Darrell, Get bent. Signed, -The Internet

Dear Internet, Your Awesome, – The CineManiac.
P.S. Cera’s gonna kick ass as Pilgrim!

    • Ceballos

I always thought it was ironic that Michael Cera was reportedly the one holdout for the “Arrested Development” movie (that’ll likely never happen) given the fact that he hasn’t really stopped playing George Michael (not the singer/songwriter).

Here’s the plan: he’ll keep on playing George Michael in all of his movies, each with a revolving door of AD alums. Juno with Michael Bluth. Year One with Tobias. He can play GOB’s nephew in that new NBC show. Sooner or later, there will be enough material to fashion a complete AD movie on YouTube.

Or maybe, Darrell, just maybe, George Michael Bluth was never much of a character at all, just a version of Michael Cera. I mean, you guys can’t always assume that just because George Michael was the first part he played (to a large audience), that also means that George Michael has the patent on that very trademark persona of his. If you’ve ever watched him in an interview, for the most part, it seems that persona is way less George Michael, way more Michael Cera.

I agree in the sense that enough with michael cera’s nebbishiness already. I mean, i liked the kid when he first came on the scene, but the one trick pony thing is getting pretty old. He’ll do fine for me as long as he keeps being surrounded by good talent. But the days of him being a main draw for me are already over…

While I agree that I dislike Michael Cera for playing the same character over and over and over again, this time I am confident it will be different.

Of course, he’s still playing an awkward young guy, but the awkwardness is much different. I think we’ll be seeing a different side of Michael Cera in this movie. Baby steps.

  • Ayn

I may have to see this one… just to see Jason Schwartzman gets his butt kicked by Michael Cera. :) Can’t stand Schwartzman.

    • Jared

Haha I could tolerate the Cera hating, but this is too much.

      Schwartzman is the BEST.

  • Emma

I’m just worried he’s playing too much Michael Cera and not enough Scott Pilgrim, who is a totally different sort of guy. Awkward? Yes, but not in the same way. Much louder, geekier, obnoxious sort of awkward, rather than quiet hipster. I’m still reserving judgment until the actual movie, though.

    • J

Yes, THIS. I’m REALLY loving the cast, but the only things that’s a bit off is Cera’s take no Scott. Scott doesn’t come across as being shyly awkward in the books, he comes across as being awkward in a loud, hyper-active, geeky man-child way. Still, this is just the trailer, so who knows. And I can’t really think of anyone else who could be Scott. Either way, this looks to be the best movie of the summer (and I say this knowing that Toy Story 3 is coming out).

    • Jared

See, that’s what I thought after the last trailer (and ever since I heard Cera was taking the part). After this one, I’m much more confident in Cera’s ability to play Pilgrim.

  • Emma

Also, I love Chris Evans as Lucas Lee in the trailer. Looks awesome.

    • Stacie

Chris Evans – your go-to comic book hero.

  • turbo

Awesome! Michael Cera playing Michael Cera. Cannot wait… but in all sincerity, it’s gonna be fun seening Superman (Brandon Routh) and Captain America (Chris Evans) in the same movie

  • Darrell’s Mom

Dear EW, please apologize for my son’s jealousy laced comments. He is still upset that Shia Lebouf was passed up for the Cera role. Since he doesn’t consider Shia Lebouf to be playing the same character in all his movies. Please go easy on him. He’s just so ignorant.

    • J

Shudder! I’d vomit if Shia were playing Scott. Cera might play similar characters all the time, but he never stops being likable. Shia’s just douchey.

  • The CineManiac

You left out Johnny Simmons, whose done some good work in some not-so-good movies (Evan Almighty, Hotel for Dogs, and Jennifer’s Body)

  • mary q contrary

Can’t wait for this one. My husband finally watched the trailer for it when we saw Kick-Ass in the theater, and he gave me the patented hand squeeze, which for us is the equivalent of a big fist-pump, accompanied by a “YESSSSSSSSSA!”

  • Stephanie

Let’s not forget the amazing Anna Kendrick. She and Billy Burke got me through New Moon.

  • Jon

This is the only summer movie that I am excited for.

  • lowe

Blah blah blah Michael Cera’s always the same blah blah blah blah… who cares?!

    This looks freakin’ awesome.
