Amanda Seyfried: The biggest 'Mean Girls' star?

Filed under: Movies and tagged: , ,

amanda-seyfriedImage Credit: Glenn Harris/PR Photos“God Karen you’re so stupid!” high school tyrant Regina George exclaimed to her daft minion when she stupidly suggested that they go to Taco Bell. (She was just trying to cheer her up!) Sure, Karen wasn’t the brightest crayon in the box — she was confused by genealogy and thought that ESPN was a fifth sense — but Amanda Seyfried, who portrayed her in the film, may be the smartest of all her Plastics counterparts. Or just the luckiest.

Six years after the release of Mean Girls, the film stands as a cult favorite. It’s a quotable landmine and a genuinely accurate depiction of the wild animal kingdom that is the high school girl-world. While its themes and funny one-liners remain timeless, the players who brought them to life, and their careers, couldn’t look more different now. In 2004, Lindsay Lohan was poised for Hollywood domination. The not-even 18-year-old was already a bankable Disney star, and was eying edgier, more mature roles (thanks to those pubescent changes). Next to her three co-stars, she was the one we thought was poised for super-stardom.

But things change. READ FULL STORY »

Facebook privacy: Who's getting creeped out?

facebook-privacyImage Credit: Billboard: Howard Berman/Stone/Getty ImagesFacebook has a genuine crisis on its hands. Need proof? Just type the letters “dele” into Google and check out the first suggested search term. (For the lazy, it’s “delete facebook account.”) It’s official: People are now creeped out by the social networking site. Facebook’s recent changes to profile privacy — and the ways it shares personal data — are convincing many to pull the plug (or at least consider doing it) rather than sift through the 50 settings and 170 options offered to manage their privacy on the site.

Facebook’s vice president for public policy, Elliot Schrage, attempted to assuage some of these concerns by answering reader questions in a New York Times Q&A published earlier this week, but some people found his answers a bit too polished and lacking in real substance, if not a bit condescending. (Ex.”Our extensive efforts to provide users greater control over what and how they share appear to be too confusing for some of our more than 400 million users. That’s not acceptable or sustainable. But it’s certainly fixable.”) So now, according to AllFacebook.com, Facebook is holding an “all-hands meeting” scheduled for today at 7 p.m. ET to address users’ growing concerns over privacy issues. 'Daily Show': I suddenly love Michael Patrick King

Jon Stewart’s interview with his old friend (!) Michael Patrick King is well worth watching. They were having a blast! “I love your delicate teamster comedy,” King marveled, patting Stewart on the arm. The two used to be stand-up buddies, way back in another lifetime before King had come out of the closet or created a hit HBO series about four sexy beasts who end up deserting the big city for the actual desert. Listen to all of Michael Patrick King’s innuendos! He is such a Samantha. Video after the jump. READ FULL STORY »

Disney/Pixar source says 'Newt' off development schedule

Filed under: Movies, News and tagged: , ,

pixar-newtLooks like Newt won’t be new(t) to theaters after all come 2012. As first reported in The Pixar Blog, it appears the film — which followed two newts forced to procreate, even though they hate each other — has indeed been canceled. (The film was already plagued with scheduling conflicts, pushed back from summer 2011 to summer 2012.) Disney/Pixar animation head John Lasseter declined to comment to EW about the reports, but a source from the studio says that with Cars 2, Monsters Inc. 2, and Pixar’s first fairy tale Brave all in the works for 2011 and 2012, “We have taken Newt off of our development schedule to allow our creative teams to focus on these upcoming projects.”

It’s a shame. I was excited to see an original film in Disney/Pixar’s line-up, considering how many sequels the studio is popping out in the next few years. (And that’s coming from a rabid fan of Monsters Inc.) Anyone else sad to hear the Newt news? —Reporting by Adam B. Vary

Spike TV's 'Guys Choice' to honor Sylvester Stallone — and if there's justice, Olivia Munn

Filed under: News, Television and tagged:

Rambo-StalloneImage Credit: Everett Collection DUDE ALERT: Tune in to Spike TV on June 20 and you shall bear witness to the network’s annual salute to manchievements. EW.com has learned that Guys Choice plans to pay special tribute to Sylvester Stallone — who wrote, directed, and stars in the upcoming action film The Expendables — for his testosterone-teeming career. (I expect plenty of attention to be heaped on Over the Top. Lincoln Hawk isn’t just the name of some old-timey band on Gossip Girl, young’uns.) Fans are currently deciding the winners in such categories as Hottest Olivia (that would be Munn versus Wilde, which sounds like an awesome reality adventure show; my money’s on Munn) and Comedy MVP (in the Ed Helms-versus-Tracy Morgan showdown, there is no wrong answer, though the ‘Nard Dog could probably use the ego boost). In addition, the cast of The A-Team is also slated to appear at the event, and Chris Rock will receive the “Funniest M.F.” So, PopWatchers, will you be observing the action from your sofa? And more importantly, on which side do you stand in the Hottest Olivia competition?

The headline tells the moral of the story. Dakota Fanning’s Jane does not take well to being questioned. Love her detached delivery. READ FULL STORY »

Toni Collette reteams with 'Muriel's Wedding' director for more Aussie insanity

Filed under: Movies, News and tagged: ,

MURIELS-WEDDINGImage Credit: Everett CollectionToni Collette is reuniting with her Muriel’s Wedding director P.J. Hogan for the film Mental. Hogan, who wrote the script, tells Variety: “Like Muriel’s Wedding, Mental is a comedy, but a comedy based on reality, laced with pain and brimming with flawed but lovable characters. Shaz [the central character, who becomes the nanny to give girls] was hilarious, outrageous, dangerous, courageous, inspiring, heartbreaking and totally, totally mad. And she changed my life.”

When you have the director of Muriel’s Wedding calling you “totally, totally mad,” you must be quite a character. No wonder Collette signed on. To celebrate Hogan — who most recently directed Confessions of a Shopaholic and has kept the crazy relatively reined in since 2002′s Unconditional Loveagain unleashing it, watch Collette and Rachel Griffith’s “Waterloo” after the jump. PopWatch Dance Party! Gotta love the Aussies. READ FULL STORY »

Jamie Foxx joins 'Horrible Bosses,' Starz to air 'Michael Jackson's 'This Is It' (Excess Hollywood)

  • Jamie Foxx is the latest star to join Horrible Bosses, Seth Gordon’s comedy about workplace murder that also stars Jason Bateman, Jennifer Aniston, Colin Farrell, and Charlie Day. Foxx is on board to play a scam artist named Motherf—er Jones. Apparently, the name of his character may change, to something like Motherf—er A–pirate Bigsh– —-s — Jones. [THR]

  • James Gandolfini and Tim Robbins have signed onto HBO Films’ Cinema Verite, a film that’s set behind-the-scenes of the documentary An American Family. The groundbreaking PBS doc, which focused on the Loud clan, zeroed in on familial issues like divorce and sexual identity. Tony Soprano says, “Wha? You think those are problems?!” [THR]
  • Christina Ricci will make her Broadway debut in Time Stands Still, playing an event-planner — a role vacated by Alicia Silverstone — in the play, which focuses on two journalists who return to New York after covering the war. Thousands of theatergoers to wonder when The Addams Family got so grim. [Variety]
  • Nick Swardson and Michael Pena are in talks to join Danny McBride and Aziz Ansari in 30 Minutes or Less, Ruben Fleischer’s comedy about a teacher and pizza delivery man who rob a bank. • In a press release, FX confirmed they have picked up Wilfred, a comedy pilot from Family Guy‘s David Zuckerman about a dog that harbors resentment towards his owner’s new boyfriend. That reminds me of the time when [insert flashback].

Lunchtime Poll: Casey James vs. Gov. Paterson

On last night’s American Idol, Casey James totally pulled a Governor David Paterson (SNL‘s Fred Armisen) at the very end by creeping past Ryan in an (unintentionally?) stealth move for extra screen time. Maybe he couldn’t help it! We should definitely pit them against each other.

Timothy Olyphant to replace Sharlto Copley as alien mentor in 'I Am Number Four': Excellent!

Filed under: Movies and tagged: , ,

Timothy-OlyphantImage Credit: Todd Williamson/WireImage.comTimothy Olyphant thought the critical success of his FX show Justified might open more big-screen doors, but he can also thank the show’s hiatus before season 2 begins production. Because District 9′s Sharlto Copley has a scheduling conflict with promoting The A-Team, Olyphant has been tapped to replace him in I Am Number Four, Variety reports. He’ll now star as the adult guardian of a group of aliens who escaped their doomed planet and hide out on Earth, pretending to be human teenagers. The title character, Number Four (Beastly‘s Alex Pettyfer) discovers he’s wanted by the rival species that destroyed their home planet. This is the D.J. Caruso film Michael Bay is producing from a script by Smallville creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar and Buffy the Vampire Slayer‘s Marti Noxon. We already had high hopes for both mega-action and teenage angst. With Olyphant, who frankly, can seem otherwordly with that long torso and lanky walk, we’re adding some dry-wit dialogue to our list of growing demands. Also, a cowboy hat (to blend in!). And a gun.
