Violins make everything better, even Lady Gaga

The Top 40 music landscape generally disinterests me, but I do love it when young musicians on YouTube take a popular song and, in the broken-record words of the Idol judges, “make it their own.” Enter Paul Dateh, a 27-year-old violinist from Los Angeles (and USC alumnus, Fight On!) who made this slick mash-up video featuring current hits by Lady Gaga, Ke$ha, Rihanna, and Usher. Mighty impressive, and long live the strings! READ FULL STORY »

'Twilight' on 'Oprah': Eight things we learned

twilight-oprahImage Credit: Oprah.comOprah Winfrey’s sit-down with Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, and Taylor Lautner finally aired today. Here, a few of the things we learned:

• Human nature says if a Twilight star shows up at your front door, you can hug him without asking; if you meet her in public, you must ask. By far the best segment of the hour was Pattinson going door-to-door to invite Twihards to the Oprah taping. (Watch the video here.) Even though he was jetlagged, he was an amazing sport. He had to knock for a while at the first house because the teens were in the basement. They saw him, screamed, and immediately all plowed into him. They had no idea what to say to him. Then, he went to the door of a birthday girl. “Oh god, they’ve got a dog,” he said as he heard it barking from outside. Reactions here: the teen was stunned into near composure, her mother, not so much. “Ohmygod, he is so hot! He’s so hot!,” she shouted with her arm around him. Finally, he went to the home of a Twifamily. The dad answered the door with an “Oh my god!” But again, the mother was the most vocal, telling him “You’re beautiful.” He posed for a family photo and as he left, said, “That was nice. I kind of wanted to stay there and have dinner.” Lautner’s outing was to a sorority house that’s so obsessed with Twilight that they have a “Twilight room.” Watching the footage (catch it here), Oprah admitted she was concerned about sending Taylor in there — they might’ve ripped his shirt off. Thank god they were sober. There was screaming, and automatic hugging, but again, it seemed as though they really didn’t have much to say to him. At least from what we saw. Stewart’s superfan was a 15-year-old from the Caribbean who loves Bella because she doesn’t change herself to fit in. (Except for becoming a vampire!) She got to meet Stewart onstage, and asked if she could hug her. They posed for a photo, and Stewart gave her a ring she wears in the film. READ FULL STORY »

Mary J. Blige to play soul singer Nina Simone

Filed under: Movies and tagged: , ,

Mary-J-Blige-nina-simoneImage Credit: Jakes Van Der Watt/PR Photos; Everett CollectionR&B superstar Mary J. Blige will be taking on the role of legendary soul and jazz singer and civil rights activist Nina Simone, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Simone, who was known as the High Priestess of Soul, but also sang in a myriad of other genres, flourished in the 1960s and 1970s with a series of civil rights anthems. Some of her most acclaimed songs included “My Baby Just Cares for Me,” “To Be Young, Gifted and Black,” and her rendition of Porgy and Bess‘ “I Loves You, Porgy.” Cynthia Mort — who previously created HBO’s short-lived Tell Me You Love Me and worked on the shows Roseanne and Will & Grace — is writing the script, which will focus on Simone’s relationship with her assistant Clifton Henderson (David Oyelowo).

But is Mary J. Blige up to the task of playing a colossal music figure who also reportedly suffered from bipolar disorder? Blige has made a few television acting appearances on The Jamie Foxx Show, Strong Medicine, and Ghost Whisperer, and she most recently starred in Tyler Perry’s I Can Do Bad All By Myself, but this biopic is truly going to be the project that reveals whether or not Blige has some serious acting chops. (Of course, she should have no trouble handling the singing aspect of the role). PopWatchers, what do you make of this casting choice?

'Entourage' producers developing female-driven comedy for HBO. Is this the birth of the d-chette?

Filed under: News, Television and tagged: ,

entourage-womenI’ve always felt “d–che” was an equal opportunity term, but let’s face it: Sadly, for the most part, it is not. So how exciting that we may be witnessing the birth of the d–chette, thanks to Mark Wahlberg and Stephen Levinson’s new female-centric show for HBO. (Welcome to the 21st century!) According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Entourage producers are developing a series about a group of female friends “working and finding romance in Los Angeles.” Apparently, we are not to think of this as the female version of Entourage — since it is not as Hollywood-centric — but tomato, tomato, right? (Just realizing now that that saying doesn’t quite work in written form, does it?)

My guess is we’ll see plenty of boob jobs and Louboutins. But the key question is: Which actresses can sell d–chettebaggery as expertly as Adrian Grenier? (I’m thinking Taylor Momsen.) And anyone else surprised by how pretty Jeremy Piven looks as a woman?

'True Blood' comic book series coming in July. Hold on to your Fangs. Or fang.

true-blood-cover-2Images of the four covers of the first issue of the True Blood comic book series on sale in July have hit. Were I going to purchase one, it would be the Disney-fied Cover B (above), only because I love the way that Bill is pictured with just one fang out. I hadn’t realized that kind of fang control was possible. Judging by how Sookie looks nothing like Anna Paquin while the other characters are at least close to their actors, I suspect the artist was purposely trying to distance her so women who want to pretend they are Sookie could. Now that I’m looking closely, Cover A looks nothing like Paquin either, and Cover C just features Tara, Jason, and Sam. (How pissed would you be if that was the only one left to purchase?) Only Cover D does Paquin proud. That one has the best all-around likenesses. Check out those covers after the jump. Is a six-issue True Blood comic series something that appeals to you? The plot was developed by show creator Alan Ball, along with series writers Elisabeth Finch and Kate Barnow, and co-written by David Tischman and Mariah Huehner — if that sways you. ”In the first storyline, Sookie and the rest of Bon Temps find themselves waiting in Merlotte’s bar for a strangely portentous raging storm to subside,” the release says. “Soon, they discover they’ve been trapped by an entity that feeds off of raw emotions and begins killing off the patrons one by one until his hunger is sated.” I’ve seen the first six pages and can you tell that Eric, looking not enough like Alexander Skarsgard, makes an early entrance, and Sookie’s chest looks larger.

Does a True Blood comic book series appeal to you? Which cover?

Big Mike shut out from lifting more people on live TV

idol-michael-lyncheImage Credit: Nino Munoz/FoxWith so few people on the American Idol stage left to pick up, Michael Lynche, aka Big Mike, got picked off last night. Was it his rendition of “Will You Be There”? Not according to him. Blame the teen girls!

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Big Mike! After you got voted off last night, you seemed to be walking around telling everyone it was okay. Did you feel like you needed to calm everyone else and not get upset yourself?
MICHAEL LYNCHE:
You can’t go too far either way. You can’t be too happy or too crazy about anything. I always want to stay down the middle. It really speaks to my personality. I always want people to know they can rely on me in any situation that’s tough or stressful. Seeing some of my guys really upset, I wanted to tell them it was okay. READ FULL STORY »

For now, the Will Arnett-Keri Russell series is perfect

That’s all that matters. For now! As Ausiello reported yesterday, Fox has picked up a comedy starring Will Arnett and Keri Russell called Running Wilde. Arrested Development mastermind Mitch Hurwitz is attached, so maybe it will be great. Or maybe it will be stupid. Maybe it will be “too smart for the lower common denominators who don’t get cerebral comedy, and thus canceled too early,” as EW reader Kerri points out. And dear lord, if it has a laugh track? Forget it! Horror show! But RIGHT NOW, what’s in my and likely many of your tunnel visions is that G.O.B. Bluth and Felicity Porter have their own TV show! To all naysayers: Please refer to bolded sentence! Again and again! Nostalgia is a powerful thing. “Illusions! I don’t have time for your illusions,” Felicity is thinking. “Just let me sketch this bust of Ben Covington as he says ‘hey,’ which you would never guess I am sketching due to my thoughtful faraway gaze, in peace!” All will be revealed soon enough — for now, refer to bolded sentence. And give hope one last chance at the alliance.
