Gidget returns to TV and movies. Groovy.

GidgetImage Credit: Everett CollectionAs we learned from, say, Transformers and Scooby-Doo, everything we thought was cool when we were kids will inevitably find a way back into contemporary pop culture. (Well, maybe the time has officially passed for a pogs resurgence.) The latest popular character from the past headed back into our lives? Variety reports that groovy 1950s and ’60s surfing icon Gidget is coming back to film and television, courtesy of Pterodactyl Prods., and 300 producer Mark Canton. I suppose that means we’ll see plenty of slow-motion shots of the gal on a surfboard, but also a sporty role model for the young TV-viewing public. Says Canton of their plans to revive the character: “Gidget has always been such a strong symbol of girl power…. With female surfing exploding across the globe, the time is right to bring her back in a major way.” (Let’s hope that Gidget chooses to wear pants, unlike Sandra Dee’s late-’50s version of the character, pictured.)

This modern Gidget will “tackle contemporary issues and will be aimed at teens, tweens, and pre-tweens,” we’re told. This leads me to believe it will mimic Frederick Kohner’s 1957 novel Gidget: The Little Girl with Big Ideas, which dabbled in serious themes like counter-culture and early feminism. (The book surrounds Gidget’s desire to participate in surfing, a sport usually reserved for boys at the time.) Yet, if the 1959 Sandra Dee movie and cheesy 1965 Sally Field TV series is any indication, it’s hard to believe an updated Gidget would be the second coming of Degrassi. The second coming of Blue Crush — now, that I can see.

You excited to hear this news, PopWatchers? Is Gidget a better role model than, say, Hannah Montana or iCarly?

A love letter to Ryan Gosling (the hipster Ryan Reynolds?)

Ryan-GoslingThank goodness Ryan Gosling has a movie coming out, because if it weren’t for all the press he has to do for Blue Valentine (which co-stars Michelle Williams and looks incredible) we might’ve missed the chance to see just how much the actor — who’s relatively undetected by paparazzi in his off time — has evolved into such a stand-out stud. 'Pirates' going 3D for Disney, USA grabs two new pilots,

Filed under: Movies, News and tagged: , , , ,
  • USA has picked up two new pilots: Necessary Roughness, about a female sports therapist/divorcée, and A Legal Mind, which follows a bright man who gets a job at a law firm without a college degree. I’ll choose to call the latter Doogie Howser, LP. [THR]
  • Disney plans to shoot 2011′s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides in 3D. Barrels of rum that pop out at you? That’s such a tease, Disney. [Variety]
  • Speaking of Disney, the studio has made a seven-figure pitch deal for a live-action re-imagining of Cinderella, which will be penned by The Devil Wears Prada writer Aline Brosh McKenna. Meryl Streep, looking to stretch herself, will sign on to play the glass slipper. [Deadline]
  • Ellen Page will star in a feature based on Cynthia Wade’s short documentary Freeheld. [THR]
  • Wayne McClammy, the director of viral videos “I’m F–king Matt Damon” and “I’m F–king Ben Affleck,” is in talks to direct comedy Desperados. The film, which is being developed for Isla Fisher, follows a woman who travels to Mexico to intercept an indignant email sent to her comatose boyfriend. God, I hate when that happens. [THR]
  • John Hurt has been tapped to star alongside Kirsten Dunst, Kiefer Sutherland, and Charlotte Gainsbourg in Lars von Trier’s disaster movie Melancholia, a “beautiful film about the end of the world,” according to executive producer Peter A. Jensen. Okay, if the world were ending, I wouldn’t just be melancholy. Shouldn’t this film be called Panic-ia? [THR]
  • Relativity Media has acquired sci-fi thriller Skyline, directed by Greg and Colin Strause, who worked on the visual effects for Avatar, Iron Man 2, and 300. The film is set in an L.A. high-rise, where a group of friends discover they are among the survivors after “most of humanity was wiped out by a deadly unknown force.” God, Spencer Pratt’s bulls–t just gets stronger and stronger every day, doesn’t it? 'Lost' countdown: Preparing for tonight's episode... and prepping for 'The End'

Filed under: Lost, Television and tagged: ,

what-they-died-forImage Credit: Mario Perez/ABCThe end of Lost is nigh, and with it will no doubt come… THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT. Will there be life after Lost comes to a close with “The End” in May 23? Will reality be able to soldier forth without Jack, Kate, Sawyer and friends flickering across our televisions? The answer — and this is a conservative estimation of the matter — is really, really uncertain. How are you spending the downtime until doomsday? If you’re looking for suggestions, I have a few.

First, visit the 815 Sentences About Lost project. Do this now, then come back. Best stuff you’ll read today about Lost. (A shout out to Todd VandDerWerff at The Los Angeles Times; I first read about the project in his column.) READ FULL STORY »

'American Idol' plans 30-minute results shows: What to cut, what to keep?

Filed under: American Idol, Reality TV and tagged: ,

idol-results-showImage Credit: Frank Micelotta/Getty ImagesFox announced its 2010-2011 lineup yesterday, and the big news for the Idoloonie Nation is the network’s plan to trim down American Idol‘s bloated results-show telecasts to lean, mean, 30-minute ordeals next season. (The network also said it planned 90-minute performance shows, though I suspect those are subject to expand and/or contract based on the number of contestants remaining during any given episode.)

Back to those truncated results, though, my cynical side isn’t getting too excited. READ FULL STORY »

'The Real Housewives of New Jersey' recap: None of you is too pretty to work

Filed under: Reality TV and tagged: ,

real-housewives-njImage Credit: BravoWhat a buzz kill of an episode, particularly after the sloshy high of Thursday’s New York Housewives. Danielle’s beautiful daughters spent much of the episode looking alternate shades of mortified. I think the main problem is that Danielle doesn’t have any friends. So she uses her girls as her go to sounding board, thrusting her adult problems onto the kitchen table while obsessively asking the poor girls for advice. (Mom, please pull off this highway right now. Mom, seriously, turn the car around.) READ FULL STORY »

'American Idol' Power List: Who's your favorite among the Top 3?

Filed under: American Idol, Reality TV and tagged: ,

American-Idol-Season-9_400.jpg Image Credit: Michael Becker/PictureGroup(2)Only four episodes remain till “There Are No Boundaries (and No Discernible Hook, Either)”  becomes the first in series of stumbling blocks set between the American Idol season 9 champ and his or her career as a viable recording star. But before we get to all that, the Top 3 (AKA WyzSeySox) must tackle two songs apiece — Judge’s Choice and Contestant’s Choice — on tonight’s performance-show telecast. (Check out my dream set list for tonight’s show, along with the leaked selections for the judges’ picks, here.) In the meantime, I figured we’d better tackle our weekly task of ranking the contestants. My list is below; then it’s your turn to vote in the Power List Poll after the jump. Plus, I added a bonus poll question just to delight/torture y’all! READ FULL STORY »

Matthew Fox talks 'Lost' ending with David Letterman

Filed under: Lost and tagged: ,

On last night’s Late Show, Matthew Fox — shiny suit and boots! — swung by to talk about the fever pitch of anticipation around the show’s finale. As David Letterman insisted last week to Evangeline Lilly — “a lovely young woman,” the host said obliviously, “who’s always on the show all the time” — the only ending he’ll accept is a dream sequence. “The only way this show will make any sense is if someone goes ‘Wake up, wake up,’” he told Fox. “And you go ‘oh, oh, we’re landing in Cincinnati.’ I will accept nothing other than that.” Fox did give us one spoiler: Cincinnati will play no part in the series finale. Check out the video: READ FULL STORY »

Jeff Probst blogs the finale of 'Survivor: Heroes vs Villains'

Filed under: Reality TV, Television and tagged: , ,

jeff-probst-survivorImage Credit: Monty Brinton/CBSAs I type this I am on the plane flying back to Los Angeles less than 12 hours after Sandra became first two-time Survivor winner.  So bear in mind I’m a bit fuzzy headed and therefore may say things I later regret or later realize aren’t funny or even interesting.

I’m not going to argue whether Sandra should have won or not.  I’ve learned from last season that it’s a bit pointless.  The jury is in charge and the jury made their decision.

Having said that… I will go on record and say that I would have voted for Parvati.  No question. READ FULL STORY »
