The new Harry Potter Theme Park: We were there!

Harry-Potter-Film-Talent-OrlandoImage Credit: Kevin Kolczynski/Universal Orlando ResortThe first thing you should know about The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is that the Butterbeer tastes magical. It’s frothy, butterscotchy, and incredibly yummy, and it’s one of many details that make the theme park — part of Universal’s Islands of Adventure in Orlando (admission: $79 per day for adults, $69 for kids) — a transportive delight for Potter fanatics. The park’s grand opening is June 18, but EW was invited for a special early look on May 17. After passing the Hogwarts Express, guests should prepare to drop more than a few Galleons on Potterphernalia in the commercial area of Hogsmeade — from $15 for the Sneakoscopes at Zonko’s joke shop, to $300 for the Firebolt broomstick at Dervish and Banges magic shop. Thanks to close supervision by the Potter films’ design team, everything looks and feels precisely right, down to the absurdly high shelves and cramped, English-style layouts. In other words, expect some tight crowds.

The above photo, meanwhile, was taken yesterday morning. Yep, that’s Robbie Coltrane (Rubeus Hagrid), Matthew Lewis (Neville Longbottom) — no, really, that is the kid who plays Neville Longbottom, no fooling — Emma Watson (Hermione Granger), and Oliver and James Phelps (George and Fred Weasley), getting their first look at Hogsmeade. So how can snow blanket the roofs of the buildings in hot and humid Orlando, Fla.? Do you think my answer to that will be anything other than “magic”?

For more inside scoop on the park — including the bewitching surprises that abound while standing in line for its signature ride, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey — pick up the new issue of EW (with Jane Lynch as Glee‘s Sue Sylvester on the cover) on stands this Friday.

So, fellow Potter-heads, are you excited to check out Harry Potter’s Wizarding World?

Cops rock: Ranking this week's procedurals

Filed under: Television and tagged:

criminal-mindsImage Credit: Michael Yarish/CBSIt’s getting close to the end of the season, which means that all of our favorite procedurals are taking brief dips into the serialized swimming pool. The Mentalist and CSI, that irascible pair of Thursday night poker buddies, both had season finales that focused on long-running storylines: Patrick Jane came face to face with Red John, and CSI brought back one psychopath (hi, Haskell!) to catch another (bye, Jekyll!) On CSI: Miami, Horatio’s ex-girlfriend returned… and got killed. On CSI: NY, Mac’s ex-girlfriend returned… and got hugged. Meanwhile, in the Law & Orderverse, it was all about marriages. The wife did it on Criminal Intent, the husband did it on SVU, and the dead husband killed his wife’s first husband on L&O. You’ve won this week, husbands.

But the modern world is consumed in amoral madness, and this week, only one cop show was tough enough to confront the greatest evil of all: the Internet.

Cat vs. Dog Watch: Which ad is more awesome, Friskies or General Mills?

commercial-petsImage Credit: Chris PolkThanks to my good friend D.V. Arrrgh, I rarely watch commercials anymore. But there are two advertisements in current rotation that I find totally irresistible — so much so that I will actually hit the rewind button (in the middle of my ad-break ff-ing) to ensure I don’t miss ‘em: Friskies’ “Feed the Senses” and General Mills’ “Dog Show.” Internally, I have a running debate about which one is more awesome. Here at PopWatch, I am leaving it up to you to decide. Watch ‘em both, then take the poll, after the jump: READ FULL STORY »

Will Forte and Jorma Taccone reveal how 'MacGruber' pays homage to cult classic 'The Room.'

Filed under: Movies, News and tagged: ,

MacGruber-the-roomRegular Popwatch readers will know that we’re fairly obsessed with the so-bad-it’s-hilarious cult classic, The Room. And we’re not the only ones. The movie’s famous fans include the team behind the MacGruber movie, which is out today and, according to director Jorma Taccone, tips a hat to Tommy Wiseau’s bizarro film on not one but two occasions.

“There’s two references in MacGruber to The Room,” says Taccone. “There’s some dialogue — ‘Is he dead? Yes, yes, he’s dead!’ — which is from the end of The Room. And then we also put in a four poster bed with a canopy, because that’s in the film as well.”

The Room was definitely an influence on us,” says MacGruber star and Saturday Night Live comedian Will Forte. “That movie is incredible. I haven’t gotten a chance to meet Tommy Wiseau yet. But I would love to. He seems like a very interesting guy.”

As someone who has had the pleasure of meeting Mr Wiseau, I can confirm that he is indeed, “a very interesting guy.” And one who is now a step closer to total world domination thanks to Taccone and Forte. Are you going to watch the MacGruber movie — or The Room — this weekend? You can check out the trailer for both after the jump.

Jesse James' 'Nightline' interview promo: Will this repair his public image?

Filed under: News, Television and tagged: ,

Promo clips have popped up online of Nightline‘s May 25 interview with Jesse James, or, as he calls himself, “the most hated man in the world now.” And, based on the clip, it looks like we can look forward to an emotional segment. “I took a pretty amazing life and marriage and threw it away,” he tells interviewer Vicki Mabrey. (See promo after the jump.)

Of course, since Nightline doesn’t want to give too much away, we see more of Mabrey’s questions than James’ answers. But I am interested to see how James responds to her comment about Sandra Bullock’s laudatory Oscar speech: “This was a woman who stood on stage and told the world, I never knew what it was like for someone to have my back until you.”

Will you tune into Nightline to watch James attempt to atone? Or are you so over the drama? And do you think James will be able to boost his public image with the interview?

Chris Lowell to join 'The Help,' Gary Oldman gets vocal for 'Kung Fu Panda' sequel

excess-hollywood

  • Private Practice‘s Chris Lowell is in talks to star alongside Emma Stone, Viola Davis, and Bryce Dallas Howard in the adaptation of Kathryn Stockett’s The Help. It’s a great book, but I’m still waiting for someone to adapt The Halp. [THR]
  • Gary Oldman will voice a character named Peacock in DreamWorks Animation’s sequel Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom. Peacock apparently helps Po locate a group of bandits, then gets on his bad side when he decides to move Jay Leno back to The Tonight Show. [THR]
  • Jason Richman will use a paper clip, a light bulb, and soap on a rope to pen the script to MacGyver. If MacGruber doesn’t destroy it first, that is. [THR]
  • The Disney Channel has picked up “teen dance buddy comedy” Shake It Up! for their fall schedule. Think 48 Hours with teens and dancing. Or not. [Variety]
  • Romola Garai is in talks to join rom-com One Day, which stars Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess as two classmates who meet during graduation, and continue to see each other one day a year for the next 20 years. Clearly, they don’t have Facebook. [THR]

Jane Lynch talks Sue Sylvester inspiration, remaking 'Vogue,' her favorite 'Glee' character, and finale teases

In person, Glee star (and this week’s EW cover subject) Jane Lynch is exactly the opposite of Sue Sylvester: warm, funny, and friendly. And now she’s a bona fide star: During EW’s photo shoot in New York’s West Village, the actress was mobbed like a rock star by fans clamoring to take a photo with Lynch. Even Oscar-winner Philip Seymour Hoffman stopped to watch the action. READ FULL STORY »

'American Idol' castoff Casey James: 'I knew at the beginning it would be Crystal and Lee at the end'

Casey-James-interview-IdolImage Credit: Nino Munoz/FoxSay what you will about Casey James making the top three — he was as surprised as the most outspoken naysayers. But just because his Idol journey is over doesn’t mean life has calmed down. Read on for his thoughts on the future, those cougar jokes, and the upcoming tour.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: I heard you had quite the busy day yesterday.
CASEY JAMES: Little bit, yeah. It was slower than a normal day lately, but still busy.

Have you been able to answer your text messages with a little more than a smiley face now?
I actually have; so that’s good. I’ve had quite a lot lately. READ FULL STORY »

Weather Channel shutdown averted, for now

Dish Network’s contract with The Weather Channel was supposed to expire at midnight, based on reports. But it’s still on the air! Dish had planned to replace TWC with an alternative service called Weather Cast. “There are no movies, no wake-up shows and no stories about storms,” Dish said in a news release. “Further, because its program schedule is all forecasting, it means that the Weather Cast has more time to focus on local weather.” Apparently the two parties are still in negotiations.

I wanted to get in some QT with TWC in case suddenly goes away in the next few days, so I’ve been dutifully watching “Day Planner” on channel 1912 in New York for about 17 minutes. I haven’t deliberately turned on The Weather Channel since I was in high school, but I’m having a pretty good time! One of the anchorwomen is named “Betty Davis.” And how else would I have learned about Fine Particulates? I’d never investigate Fine Particulates on Weather.com. You can never be too careful.

Does anyone ever watch The Weather Channel anymore? Would you watch if it didn’t air nighttime movies and original shows like Storm Chasers, Florida Fog, and (!?!) Lightning Mom?

Earlier: The Weather Channel to show movies? Hail no!

Lunchtime Poll: What's up with Mischa Barton?

It’s pics like this that make me really nostalgic for O.C.-era Mischa, when everything about her was symmetrical and the only setback stylists would run into was the eternal struggle to convincingly spray her “problem bangs” to one side. Here’s Mischa at the amfAR’s Cinema Against AIDS Gala in Cannes.
