'Sex and the City 2': Shop Carrie's closet

sex-city-ParkerThe first Sex and the City movie was pretty grim, what with all the breakups, the cheating, and Charlotte’s gross indigestion scene, but one of the film’s lightest and happiest moments was the throwback scene when Carrie did a little fashion show in her original apartment, wearing some good, bad, and ugly retro fashion, along with the iconic tutu from the show’s opening title sequence.

That closet holds so many memories for fans of the show — from Carrie dancing in tighty-whities to our heroine making Aidan swear on her Chanel dress. And now, we get to actually step inside it (only virtually, unfortunately) courtesy of the sequel’s website, which dedicates a whole section to Ms. Bradshaw’s couture temple. READ FULL STORY »

Disney's 'Oceans': Chill out and go see it

Filed under: Movies and tagged: ,

Last night I felt like seeing a movie. If I really wanted to look alive and place my finger on the pulse of what people care about in pop culture, I probably should have seen Shrek Forever After or MacGruber. Instead I chilled the eff out and went to see Disney Nature’s Oceans, produced by Winged Migration‘s Jacques Perrin and Jacques Cluzaud. I’m pretty terrified of the entire animal kingdom, but I like fish because they’re usually contained in glass and can’t hurt me. The character in Oceans definitely couldn’t hurt me because fish can’t swim through screens!

This movie is beautiful. To me it felt more artistic than documentary. There were barely any words, and when there were, Pierce Brosnan was saying them. Everything was slow and measured. Most of the “scenes” were just long shots of different crazy fish. I’d get lost in marveling at how ridiculous it is that such shapes and color combos can occur naturally — that’s just how they are?! — and then Pierce Brosnan would just softly name what I was looking at. I liked being let in on a series of underwater secrets from the lilting brogue of an Irishman who wasn’t throwing it in my face that he’s smarter than me about science. READ FULL STORY »

This Week on Stage: Edie Falco stars in 'This Wide Night'

wide_night_falcoImage Credit: Carol RoseggIn a rather quiet week on the boards, just two new notable shows opened Off Broadway. First, last Sunday, the one-act British drama This Wide Night, which stars Nurse Jackie‘s Edie Falco (pictured here) and In Treatment‘s Alison Pill, opened to a strong review from EW’s Adam Markovitz. He gave the production an A– and said that it’s almost as if you’re watching the two cooped up friends that Falco and Pill play “on a surveillance camera, wardens of the new jail they’ve made for themselves.” In terms of Falco, specifically, Markovitz said that “her emotional hold on the part is unshakable. It’s as indelible a character as any of Falco’s celebrated roles on screen, a statement not to be made lightly.”

Across town was an other drama opening, as Billy Crudup led a production of The Metal Children, a drama written and directed by Anthony Rapp. Thom Geier gave the show a middling C+, commenting that “The Metal Children feels like a promising early draft of a work in progress.”

In other stage news for the week, Pee-wee Herman will be bringing his stage show to Broadway after a successful run in Los Angeles earlier this year. The show goes into previews Oct. 26 before officially opening Nov. 11.

Trailer for 'Rio' and its CGI macaws: Are there any creatures great or small that haven't yet been animated?

There are approximately 1.4 million identified species on the planet Earth. About 1.3 million of those have already been featured in a CGI-animated movie. The new trailer for 20th Century Fox’s Rio, a family film about a pair of rare blue macaws who lam it to Brazil, made me stop and think: What is it about CGI movies that make Hollywood get all obsessively zoological? (See trailer after the jump.) READ FULL STORY »

'Lost': Every shirtless male moment. Plus: The sexiest male and female characters

Filed under: Lost, Television and tagged: , , ,

Sawyer-toplessImage Credit: ABCThank the good folks over at Vulture for this one: A video featuring every shirtless male moment from Lost. And there are a lot of them — remember, this is a hot, steamy island, folks! I still hold firm in my belief that shirtless swimming Sawyer is still not nearly as sexy as shirt- and glasses-wearing reading Sawyer. (And it’s still hard to believe watching the video that Charlie’s diaper commercial scene was not played for laughs, and was actually a pretty depressing moment in the series.) Related: Nerve has ranked the sexiest male and female Lost characters. (Poor Leslie Arzt.) I feel Keamy should have placed higher than No. 17, because the bad boy thing — okay, more like psychopathic boy thing — totally works for him. And me. What?

Also related: Lost re-enacted by cats. (Embedded below.) Because cats make everything better. Who knew Hurley was played by Professor Happycat? READ FULL STORY »

Hayden Panettiere in talks for 'Scream 4.' Should she trade the small screen for the big screen?

Filed under: Movies, News, Television and tagged: , ,

Hayden-PanetierreImage Credit: Noel Vasquez/FilmMagic.comSince the cheerleader herself couldn’t even save Heroes from its inevitable demise, Hayden Panettiere is back on the market. Career-wise, that is. And it looks like she’s already moving on from the NBC superhero series by booking her first post-Heroes gig: According to The Hollywood Reporter, Panettiere is in talks to star in Wes Craven’s upcoming sequel Scream 4. (The actress would play Neve Campbell’s cousin’s “nerdy film geek” pal; Twilight‘s Ashley Greene is in talks to play Campbell’s cousin.)

It seems wise for Panettiere to attach herself to an anticipated franchise film — even if she might get lost amongst the film’s large ensemble — but I’m hoping the actress finds another TV vehicle worthy of her small-screen talents. After all, with the exception of schmaltzy guilty pleasure Remember the Titans, Panettiere has yet to hit on the big screen: Raising Helen, Ice Princess, and I Love You, Beth Cooper hardly made an impression audience- and box-office-wise — and those are some of her more high-profile projects. (As for Bring It On: All or Nothing — well, Panettiere should probably retire her cheerleader’s uniform to avoid typecasting, right?) Though I stopped watching Heroes in the middle of season 2, I can confidently say that Panettiere was one of season 1′s highlights: She possesses that rare on-screen relatability and manages to make even the cheesiest TV moments (e.g., all that Burnt Toast Diner craziness, Claire’s showdown with Debbie, Claire’s in-air flight with West) bearable. (Okay, I’ll admit it: Meryl Streep couldn’t even make that last Superman-inspired moment bearable.) Plus, as we’ve seen since her days as child actor in Titans and Ally McBeal, the girl’s got acting chops. So I’m crossing my fingers that Panettiere graces my television set again soon — and not just in one of her Neutrogena ads.

Who’s with me, PopWatchers? Do you agree Panettiere deserves her own series?

'American Idol': How about some Crystal Bowersox and Lee DeWyze originals for Tuesday's finale?

idol-bowersox-dewyzeImage Credit: Michael Becker/FoxOn Wednesday night’s American Idol results show, we learned that finalist Crystal Bowersox has been pushing all season long for a night of contestants’ original compositions. And it’s about dang time, I say! After all, when we cast votes on Fox’s reality juggernaut, we’re not just passing judgment on who can pull off the best cover of Elvis or Shania or the Rolling Stones. We’re weighing in on which contestant(s) we think have the best chance of sustaining a viable music career — of producing the franchise’s next “Since U Been Gone” or “Last Name” or “Live Like We’re Dying” — in a post-Idol world.

Considering that over the next few months, Crystal and her finale partner Lee DeWyze will be thrown into the studio with A-list producers and writers with the goal of cranking out debut albums under the 19 Recordings imprint, doesn’t it make sense for us to want to hear their original tunes prior to the final vote? I’ve put in a call to the folks at Fox and 19 to see if, perhaps, Ken Warwick & Co. are taking Crystal’s suggestion under advisement, but so far, I’ve gotten no response. (At least they played her “Holy Toledo” on Wednesday’s results show.)  And before you wave your hand and dismiss the finalists’ ability to have a say in the sound of their debut records, bear in mind that David Cook and Kris Allen, the two most recent Idol champs, wrote or co-wrote the majority of tracks on their major-label discs.

Two other reasons to get behind this idea: READ FULL STORY »

'Grey's Anatomy' finale: Remember where it all began...

If you’re like us, you watched last night’s wrenching Grey’s Anatomy finale wondering: Where the heck did all this gunman’s rage come from? Well, it began among much sexier storylines such as Alex’s secret brother showing up, Callie pining for a baby, and April crushing on Derek. In fact, you’ll see from this clip (from the April 1 episode “Sympathy for the Parents”) that April and Lexie could barely wait to bolt from the room when future hospital-shooter Gary Clark was getting the news about his wife’s euthanasia wishes — and it wasn’t even because they were so emotionally drained from his pain, but because they were itching to talk more about April having the hots for Lexie’s brother-in-law. The Gary Clark stuff starts around 2:30 here: READ FULL STORY »

'Going the Distance' trailer: Cute couple + Charlie Day + Jim Gaffigan = warm fuzzies.

As someone in a long-distance relationship, I already have a soft spot in my heart for Aug. 13′s Going the Distance. Then add charming real-life couple Drew Barrymore and Justin Long, and one of the funniest men to grace cable television — that would be It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia‘s Charlie Day, duh — and you better believe I’m traveling the distance to my local theater. Check out the trailer below, and prepare to say “Aww.” Seriously, is there a cuter couple than Barrymore-Long?

P.S. I reward Distance with one hot pocket for including Jim Gaffigan in the cast. READ FULL STORY »

Pac-Man on Google.com: You can play it!

In honor of Pac-Man’s 30th anniversary this week, Google is hosting the actual game. You think it’s just a cool image, but then it’s an actual game. You don’t even need to “Insert Coin” — the game will just start for you! And then you’ll switch to another one of your 37 open tabs and forget that it’s still going and someone will approach your door and say “HOW DO YOU LIVE LIKE THIS?” because without the visual context, you’re just sitting there willingly listening to ambulance sirens. Then you’ll realize you should start playing Pac-Man again, and there goes your afternoon. Sorry, your boss!

What’s your favorite Pac-Man snack? Mine is the strawberry, though I was always intrigued by the anomaly of root beer. I always appreciated that strawberry came second because I was terrible at Pac-Man. I used to believe the creators of Pac-Man had put my favorite two fruits in the beginning so that I’d be momentarily giddy and then not feel like that big of a loser when I lost. But then I grew up!
