'Doctor Who' recap: Not-so-true blood in 1580s Venice

doctor-whoImage Credit: BBCFirst things first: My apologies for the tardiness of this recap! I was out of town this weekend without access to BBC America, but first thing I did when I got home was fire up the DVR and watch last night’s zippy, action-packed “The Vampires of Venice” telecast. This was one of those Doctor Who episodes with ambiguously evil baddies. As Lady Rosanna herself pointed out, you couldn’t exactly damn her for wanting to trade the population of Venice in 1580 to spare her entire race. Or could you? That final shot of Rosanna disguised as a human and feeding herself to her sons contained a minor chord of sadness that was made all the more poignant by her parting shot to the Doctor: “Can your conscience carry the weight of another dead race? Remember us. Dream of us.” The eerie silence that fell over Venice afterward — and the repetition of Rosanna’s remarks — was a brief and chilling nod to the overarching “Crack in Time” through-line of the ongoing fifth season. “There were cracks. Through some we saw silence and the end of all things.”

Chilling stuff for an episode that contained plenty of light moments, especially via the reconnecting of Amy Pond and her righteously goofy groom-to-be, Rory. In the latter role, Arthur Darvill resembles an extra-befuddled Adrien Brody, and his attempt to use a broom to battle Francesco the sea creature was particularly amusing. Other good things: I particularly liked how the aliens resembled vampires only because their potential victims’ brains overrode the image-altering technology to view the part of the alien anatomy that posed the greatest threat. And I’m stoked that Amy-Rory appears to have quickly and succinctly quashed Amy-The Doctor as the running romance of this Who season. Will the postponed-through-time-travel wedding happen soon? As Rory himself noted, “I have a right to know! I’m getting married in 430 years!”

The episode’s other great quote came from The Doctor, responding to Rosanna’s come-on: “I’m a Time Lord. You’re a big fish. Think of the children.” What did you make of the episode? How are you feeling about the Matt Smith-Karen Gillan partnership? And did you have any sympathy for the water-bound aliens? Sound off in the comments, and follow me on Twitter @EWMichaelSlezak.

'Totally Lost': We discuss 'What They Died For' and look ahead to tonight's finale!

Filed under: Lost, Television and tagged: , ,

totally-lostImage Credit: ABCGulp. Sigh. Yay! Yikes! Lot of emotions swirling around today as we prepare to embrace The End of Lost. Just think: By night’s end, you will have all of/some of/few of the answers to the weighty questions that have been keeping you up at night and annoying your family members/friends/co-workers who never watched the show. But before we walk into the light, let us engage in a quick review session. In this week’s installment of Totally Lost, we analyze several critical issues presented in last week’s episode of “What They Died For,” such as Ben’s seeming return to the dark side and the heady responsibilities of the Island Guardian. We also chat about what we want to see in tonight’s Wookie-size blowout finale, fittingly titled “The End.” And given that breaking up is hard to do, we won’t say our farewells just yet—Totally Lost will present one more show so we can address and assess the finale. Follow @ewdocjensen and @dansnierson for more details on when that potentially weepy installment shall come to fruition. Happy viewing tonight, y’all, and watch the video. READ FULL STORY »

Who takes your best-dressed crown at Cannes this year?

cannes-blanchett-williamsThe films have played, the deals are done and right now in Cannes, they’re rolling up the red carpet to signal the end of France’s annual film festival. And like every year, we’ve seen a parade of red carpet gowns — some incredible, some not so much.

It being France and one of the world’s most prestigious movie events, it’s only natural for many actresses to go for big ball gowns with plenty of drama. As meticulous as the construction of these dresses might be, there’s something about them that’s become so stale to me. It’s not new, it’s not exciting and it makes everyone look like a clone.

But when Cate Blanchett walked the carpet in a bold, eagle-print Alexander McQueen gown (far left), that was a dress that got people talking. Whether you like it (like I do) or not, you can’t deny that it’s something different. But it’s not just its uniqueness that did it for me; it’s the fact that only someone like Blanchett could pull it off. It’s not easy to make prints looks good, but to make an emblazoned bald eagle look fit for a queen? That’s a skill.

In the case of Eva Longoria Parker’s gorgeous but ultimately ordinary Emilio Pucci gown, I could’ve seen that same number on anyone from Charlize Theron to fellow Cannes attendee Kate Beckinsale. Not everyone has the regal quality about her to wear that kind of dress. So Cate, you win but — you have to share this award with Michelle Williams (near left).

The Blue Valentine star hit up the amfAR gala in a sequined mini by French designer Sonia Rykiel. Mod, breezy, and oh so flattering, it was the type of dress that few could pull off, but Williams is one of them thanks in part to her flawless makeup and short ‘do, which, I might add, looked vastly improved from this.

But since talk of best always deserves a talk of what was the worst, my nomination goes to Elizabeth Banks in this atrocious Versace mess. The hair, the hoop earrings, the window blind-esque bottom half — where to begin?

What do you guys think of Blanchett and Williams’ looks? Do you give my crowned winners a thumbs up or down? Who else did you like from this year’s festival? And who else thinks Banks’ Versace dress should be burned and rid from our memories?

'Glee' Live!: Sue Sylvester does not approve, but we do

Filed under: Glee, Television and tagged: , ,

glee-liveImage Credit: Kevin Winter/Getty ImagesI think I’m a little deaf now, PopWatchers. Glee Live! came to the Gibson Amphitheater in Los Angeles this weekend, and the audience at Saturday’s matinée show was very gleeful indeed. It’s one thing to watch the show at home or talk about it with friends the next day or tweet about it. But to experience it live with thousands of other people? It’s, well, deafening, and a testament to the Glee phenomenon. The crowd at the kid-friendly matinée show proved Glee truly is universal, attracting everyone from little kids and their chaperons to teenagers to adults and even a woman carrying a baby. Welcome to the world, kid. I hope you brought your earplugs. Also spotted in the audience: Glee creator Ryan Murphy, signing autographs and taking pictures with fans. READ FULL STORY »

Countdown to 'Lost': What is the Sideways world? What kind of 'mystery' is 'Lost'? PLUS: What 'Lost' means to me

Filed under: Lost and tagged:

lost-finale-teaserImage Credit: Mario Perez/ABC“The End” is finally upon us. The Super Bowl of Geekdom has finally arrived. How do I feel? Just…weird. Excited. Nervous. Sad. Relieved. Detached. Overwhelmed. I am certain this heightened flux of emotions will make watching the show and enjoying it and appreciating it and assessing it extremely challenging. I have to post a recap tomorrow. I wish I didn’t. I wish I could sit with the episode and my experience of the episode for a few days before crafting a narrative that could summarize whatever it is you and I and a few million of our friends are about to see. Part of me wishes I never had to write anything about the finale. For starters, I’d rather get in a room with you all and talk about it. And then there’s this: I know whatever I say in my recap won’t be my final thought on Lost. I don’t think I’ll ever arrive at a definitive statement about this story. But I must write a recap, and so I will, and it will post tomorrow — for better and worse. And then I will write one or two more Doc Jensen columns in the next week or two, and then that will be it. No more. The End. READ FULL STORY »

'American Idol': Paula Abdul to return for finale

Paula Abdul will return along with former contestants for a special sendoff for Simon Cowell on Wednesday’s American Idol finale, reports People. Ooh, this is just like Kate Gosselin returning for Tuesday’s Dancing With the Stars finale, except Paula is generally adored, relevant to the show at hand, and talented. Christina Aguilera will be there, too, but Fox is keeping quiet about who else will appear on Wednesday’s season 9 finale. What we do know: Crystal Bowersox or Lee DeWyze will be named the winner and Simon will halfheartedly wave goodbye to TV for over a year after being booed for the last time by Randy Jackson. (Simon’s U.S. version of X-Factor is slated for fall 2011.)

Is anyone else dying for Paula to get up and dance during the finale, preferably in her aerobic dance video outfit? It’s so beautiful. I’d like to see a Paula/Ellen/Kara dance-off to a techno remix of the American Idol theme song that has like two notes in it. Alternatively, Paula could just be sitting between Randy and Simon as the show opens, like we’ve stumbled upon some creepy sideways world. “Guys, where are we?” she’d drawl. You’ve seen Lost. Anything is possible.

Will you be glad to see Paula return? Perhaps she’ll get cozy enough to stay ’til next spring…

'Lost': How much would you be willing to pay to see the finale?

Filed under: Lost, Television and tagged: ,

Lost-finaleImage Credit: Mario Perez/ABC You’ve invested six years of your life into this twist-o-rama drama called Lost, and you’ve been brimming with excitement, anxiety, theories, and burning questions. Now, just one day away from the series finale, you’re on the verge of witnessing mystery resolution and learning How It All Ends. But before you do, ponder this hypothetical question: What is that experience worth to you? Can you actually put a price on your curiosity? How much of your hard-earned (or inherited) dough would you be willing to part with to see the last episode of Lost — if that were the only way to see it?

In this scenario, let’s imagine that you’re not so angry that you’ve gotten to see every other episode for free, you would refuse to pay for it on principle. Your viewing experience could be in a movie theater or in your own home — in the words of a certain Island god, you have a choice. Because you’re paying, you do not have to suffer through commerical interruptions. And remember, this will be the only chance you’ll ever have to see it. No waiting for it to come out on DVD a few months later.

I posed this rather ridiculous question to a few of my EW colleagues. Doc Jensen said that he’d shell out $10,000 “as long as I could expense it.” Jason Averett claimed that he’d pony up a non-expensable $250. Dalton Ross insisted that he’d spend only $19.99. (Still, he pointed out that $19.99 “would be the most that I have ever paid to see any movie or TV show.”) As for me? Deeeeeeeeep exhale of consideration…. I know I’m in too deep to let a few Andrew Jacksons stand in the way of ultimate knowledge…. Calculating…. Calculating…. Oh, of course: It has to be… $108! (Now, what if there were an a la carte system, in which you could pay a smaller amount to get an answer to a specific mystery? Yeah, you’re right — too complicated.)

All right, PopWatchers, quickly pore over your financial records and then ask yourself: What is this finale experience worth to you in dollars?
