'The Good Wife' season finale tonight: Five possible scenarios

Filed under: Television and tagged: ,

the-good-wifeImage Credit: David M. Russell/CBSTonight, we find out if Alicia (Julianna Margulies) will stand by her man, cheating husband Peter (Chris Noth), as he attempts to win back his seat as the State’s Attorney of Illinois’ Cook County. Until last week, when Alicia essentially made a deal with Peter’s image consultant Eli (Alan Cumming) that he’d bring his business to her law firm to secure her job if she’d continue playing The Good Wife, I thought she might actually leave Peter for Will (Josh Charles), the old friend/current boss with whom she has a history. With Cumming becoming a regular in season 2, I just don’t see how Alicia backs out of that unspoken agreement. So what do you think happens? From the preview, embedded below, we know that Will makes his intentions clear and that Alicia has a decision to make — will she join Peter on stage at a press conference, or will she accept an incoming call from Will? From talking with Cumming, we know that the final seconds of tonight’s finale (CBS, 10 p.m. ET), will involve Alicia, Will, Peter, and Eli. I can see five possible scenarios — possibly none of which are correct, because the Good Wife writers are smarter than me…

Scenario #1: Alicia goes to Will. Peter and Eli follow. Eli threatens to pull his business and destroy the firm. Will has to decide if he’s really ready to choose love over ambition. (Too melodramatic.)

Scenario #2: Alicia goes to Will. Peter and Eli follow. Eli threatens to pull his business and destroy the firm — unless Alicia agrees to play wife to Peter in public and lover to Will in private. (Too seedy.)

Scenario #3: Alicia goes to Will. Peter and Eli follow. Eli tells Alicia and Will that Childs and Cary are out to destroy them all. If they don’t work together, they’ll all go down.

Scenario #4: Alicia chooses to stay with Peter for the sake of her job (oh, and the children). Eli tells Alicia and Peter that Childs and Cary are out to destroy Alicia now, too, and they all go to warn Collateral Damage Will and strategize.

Scenario #5: Alicia separates from Peter and tells Will she needs time alone. Eli tells Peter that Childs and Cary are out to destroy Alicia now, too, and they go to warn Alicia (and Collateral Damage Will) and strategize.

Which scenario is your money on? Feel free to propose a sixth…

SPOILER UPDATE: I was right about being wrong. I moved too fast. Look for Ken Tucker’s recap in the a.m. on his blog.

I think she will separate from Peter and tell Will it’s too soon and to wait (and us as viewers, wait too)

What if she leaves them both and goes to another firm, leaving all the baggage behind. Not likely though. After all the show is called “The Good Wife”.

  • Mandy

I think #5 is the closest. I see her wanting to seperate, but not ready to jump in with Will. This will bring them all working together to defeat Childs and Cary, but not having Allicia with any one guy.

    option 3 is my guess

That’s not much of a choice. Peter and Will are both weak, spiritually and morally. The only characters with strength are Alicia, Kalinda, and Eli. I’m hopeful that something good comes from that troika.

I propose that she picks Kalinda over Peter AND Will.

        This.

        Sigh… My dream come true.

  • Jackie

I have to go with door #5 as the likeliest.

I think she will join Peter, its too soon to create a Will/Alicia romance. I think it will create more storylines if there is tension on the campaign trail eventually having Alicia plan to divorce in the middle of the campaign.

Alicia will stay with Peter and things will be left up in the air with Will – thus the title of the show “The Good Wife.” If Alicia and Peter separate then the title will have to change.

Alicia answers her phone and turns to go to Will. Eli follows and reminds her of their deal. He threatens to pull his business and destroy the firm. Will hears this b/c he’s still on the phone. Eli forces Alicia to decide. She looks at her phone and at Peter, who’s still at the podium. We’re then left hanging until September, wondering who she’ll pick.

I like this scenario the best. And she’d stay with Peter in episode 2.1, because it’d be best for Will’s company. Then next season she goes through breaking up with Peter. Then season 3 is (after Peter has a death-scare) deciding whether she should go back with Peter or not. Season 4 can throw in a new (evil) suitor (and Will/Peter can team up to save her).

I should write for this show…

I’m thinking #5…Or it may just end with what the trailer shows–her at that moment of decision, thus a cliffhanger for next season.

Peter has not been contrite enough. Nor has he been attentive to Alicia’s feelings, the state of his marriage before and after his philandering. I think he needs to grovel, get real counseling, and try hard to win her back. I also hope he doesn’t get her back. I hope Alicia ultimately moves on to someone else besides Peter or Will. Both of them see her as a means to an end.

    Kalinda … yes!
I want to see a picture of Mandi!

  • 5

I like Scenario 5 and think it is the most likely. Of course putting Eli in the driver’s seat can surely change things. I hope not as Will and Alicia are a great match (though I suspect deep down he is a LOT like Peter and she will find that out soon enough…)

  • info

While I like 5, believe since it’s called “The Good Wife” she will stay with Peter, just not sure in what capacity.

  • Sheila

I think she will go to Will with Peter following her. After a particularly heated argument among the three, Eli enters, grabs Alicia and drags her off to the Tardis revealing that he is really Dr. Who. Together they cross the Universe fighting evil doers and finally destroying the Dalek.

Either that or she stays with Peter for the time being because Eli blackmails her.
