'Survivor Talk': Russell and Parvati argue over who deserved to win 'Heroes vs Villains'

Survivor-20-FinalImage Credit: Monty Brinton/CBSWe saw Russell and Parvati arguing quite a bit down the stretch of Survivor: Heroes vs Villains, but there’s one thing they do agree upon: The right person did not win the game. Agreeing on whom the right person is, however, is a different matter. The second and third place finishers stopped by EW for a special Survivor Talk chat. Among the topics covered: Which contestant hates Russell the most? (The answer will surprise you.) Does Parvati feel she played better here or in Micronesia? And in the most shocking development of all, Russell finally admits he may have a problem when it comes to addressing the jury. (Get out!) Too see this dysfunctional couple in all their hilarious, bickering glory check out the must watch video below. After that, make sure to catch my Survivor Talk interview with Heroes vs Villains champ Sandra, where she talks about trying to give her hidden immunity idol to…Rupert? And for all the Survivor scoop year round, follow me on Twitter @EWDaltonRoss. Okay, take it away, Parv and Russ!

    Russell is freaking delusional.

    • Alicia

Yes, but in a good way. I love watching him on the show. He is too funny! But he’s definitely not delusional about being one of the best that has ever played this game. Parvati deserved to win this season, but he definitely deserved to win Samoa (by deserved I mean controlled the game).

      • Ben Miller

I don’t think Russell is dilusional. That would mean he honestly holds a particular opinion. I think he knows of the social aspect but doesn’t want to admit to it, because he knows it would require sacrifices. But, Parvati totally deserved to win. She obviously had help from Russell, and it was his play which allowed her to get over the first MASSIVE hurdles. But, she did everything perfectly well. I don’t think this season was at all a social game. It was a strategy game where all but a few half-assed it and gave up in that area. But, being likable would ultimately play into the jury votes–and Russell should have known that. He made a lot of social risks and exposed himself. Parvati was strong, cautious, disciplined, tough, discerning, intuitive, and likable. She was better than Sandra in all aspects. But because Sandra isn’t an incredibly imposing player, as Parvati is, people don’t feel bad about how not as good they are when Sandra wins.

        alicia you moron

        Stan, you caveman

      • Logic

        Deserved? lol

Russell and his trolls, I mean fans, think aggressively bullying around means “owning” the camp and winning Survivor. And they get shocked that it comes bite them in the ass when no one votes for Russell at the end. Big Shocker! If you bully some one like what Russell did, then it’s obvious your victims aren’t gonna like you, let alone respect you. And Russell and his fans expect the victims to “respect” his game play? Talk about being delusional. I wonder if they get far in life doing and thinking like that: victims should respect the abuser for bullying the victims. What world do these abusers live in? A self-centered, have a cake and eat it too, world? Yeah, Russell is the best, the best at not getting jury votes, the best at going to the end and not win, the best at being used, the best at being a sore loser.

Russell and his fans don’t understand playing to the end does not justify as the winner. Anyone can get to the end. The game is designed so that people are constantly eliminated. You can have a tribe full of lazy asses doing nothing and you would still end up with 2 or 3 finalists since elimination is mandatory. So Russell Hantz using the excuse that he worked hard to get to the end is not a good excuse, if anything it shows the game may be too much for him since he “worked hard”. Smart players don’t or shouldn’t have to work hard. Not like you’re building something and at the end you say you’ve worked hard, or like running a race and at the end you say you ran hard or you worked hard during training. This game Survivor is mainly a mind game. If you say you’ve worked hard using your mind then maybe you’re too dumb in the head and trying too hard. Smart player wouldn’t have to “work hard” just to get to the end since by default through the voting/eliminations someone or some 2 or 3 contestants will end up in the end naturally/eventually. Besides, the end isn’t really the end since you need jury votes. Since this is a mind game because the main focus is jury management, a smart player would use someone or some group of people to do the work for the smart player as the game progresses. A smart player would convince or indirectly get someone else i.e. the tool to vote on the smart player’s behalf and make that tool think that tool made the decision to vote someone else off. So when it comes to the jury, the jury would think it was the tool’s decision to vote them off, so the jury would blame the tool and antagonize the tool, while giving the winning votes to the smart player. That’s a mind game. That’s what Survivor is. For Russell and his fans to say that he deserves to be the winner because he worked hard to get to the end is just dumb. That’s like rewarding a special needs kid for just finishing the race. And Survivor is not that kind of a physical race where you cross the finish line you win, or a strength challenge like World’s Strongest Man where they’re judged by a concrete criteria that is physical strength, or a national TV game show like American Idol where the majority of TV viewers phone in to vote and decide. When you boil down to it, Survivor is about playing the people/the contestants and the majority of those who end up in the jury decide the winner, so it’s a mind game, a social game. Certainly reaching to the last day of Survivor is not the finish line, but just part of the game.

For the jury to vote one way or another, no matter how unpopular the votes may be, the jury gets the final say, not TV viewers. That’s the game. Besides, TV viewers only get a glimpse of what goes on over there or what the Survivor editors want us to see for entertainment values. Viewers don’t live with contestants 24/7, so what viewers see doesn’t reflect the complete story. Voting based off of that incomplete information would not do contestants justice.

      • Russell The Brute

Even for getting to the end, Russell Hantz’s approach to the game only works if he gets insecure people in the game, then he can intimidate all he wants and pawn it off of as “control”. If he gets type-A alpha males or people without insecurity issues in the game, then his oil-riggin brute force one-dimensional game play won’t work.

    • Rosalie

I am actually sad to see these two being unable to accept defeat. They can call Sandra every name in the book, but at the end of the day, she still beat them both. Russell brought the team down when he went to look for the first hidden idol. the villains were doing great, but Russell wanting to have control brought chaos into the team. A true King wants peace and unity within his kingdom because its easier to rule that way. I once read that the people Kings and Queens fear the most is those they rule over because they can stand up to them at any time and overthrow them. That is what happened to this king and queen, they got over thrown by those they oppressed. And the court jester made everyone laugh and happy. I can not stand sore loosers. YEs, they might have “controlled” the game all the way through, but at the end, they did not win. Sandra did. When I ran track & cross country there was several time when I was way ahead of the competitions. Slowly but surely someone would catch up to me at times and I would end up 2nd, 3rd and even 5th one time. When it was all said and done, no matter how many meters ahead I was, they got to the finish line before I did and therefore they beat me. I remember that I would go and give a hug to them and congratulate them for defeating me. Yes I was bummed out but I admited others victories, regardless of wether they sprinted at teh end or at the begining they stil beat me. My point is it doesn’t matter how far ahead of the game you think you are, when it comes to Survivor anyone can win for any reason. But you know what, Sandra if you read this, let those two sore loosers call themselves the King and Queen, you are a goddess compared to them. Better yet, Russy is the King, Parv the Queen, and Sandra is the motherfcuking ACE! All hail Sandra, the ULTIMATE SURVIVOR. She has won survivor playing it the old school way and she has won survivor playing it the new school way with hidden idols and all.

      • patrick

what you don’t consider is the fact, that the hole jury did NOT vote for sandra, they voted against russ/pav!! ANYBODY sitting next to them would have won bc the jury was bitter. sandra was there because russel took her there…

      • Terry

Rosalie are you Sandra’s sister? She was boring and this show would have completely sucked without Russell and Parvati. Sandra was always talking about what she was gonna do, but she could never get her fat butt off Russell’s coattails to do anything. It’s funny that she was GOING TO give Rupert a hiddeen immunity idol, but she didn’t. That’s the thing about her, she never does anything but run her mouth to the cameras. This was a great year for Survivor, but a terrible year for winners. I’ve already forgotten who won Samoa, and will probably forget about Sandra( I had forgotten she had been a previous winner until about halfway into the season, pretty obvious SHE’LL never parlay this show into a reality series) in a couple more months. But then again, it’s really very rare that the winner of Survivor is truly the best one out there.

      • Tonic

There were no coat-tails for Sandra to ride. And sorry, but the jury VOTED her the survivor. Every player is different, has different strengths and weaknesses – Sandra’s were physical. However, she demonstrated that she can outwit, outlast and outplay them all. TWICE.

      • Rosalie

no I am not her sister, though I would love to be. Maybe she could help me pay off my house:) Terry, you are right about Sandra talking about things she was going to do. That is the beauty of her play, she makes the moves if and when all her basis are covered. Don’t get me wrong I was beyond entertained by Russy, love him on T.V. agree with you 100% there. He is ENTERTAINING but not sole survivor material.

      • Mark G

Well said Patrick . . . It was a vote for someone other than Russell, and to a degree Pavrati . . . Sandra “won” by default . . . nothing more . . . it’s very obvious.

      • Terry

Not to mention Sandra is butt ugly. No wonder her old man stays in Afghanistan.

      • Agnes

I completely agree, Rosalie. Sandra was hilarious and more entertaining than Russell. Terry clearly doesn’t anything and is just bitter.. calling her ugly? Uhh, has he seen Russhole? haha

Sandra is the queen of Survivor and the only $2 million winner. Parv and Russ are just bitter, they need to get over it.

      • Paul

This video was meant as a joke. They were pretending to be a couple at a Marriage Councillor’s office. Yes there was alot of truth to it, but they played up the whole bickering couple thing for laughs.

      • lisa08

        WELL SAID

      • @Terry

You are a pathetic little person. Sandra’s husband was in Iraq because he is serving his country (as mine is now). Did you notice that he was at the finale? Army families don’t make much money. Good for her to PLAY her way and WIN!

    • Lee

Colby was right when he told Russell he was delusional at the final tribal council. And Russell is NOT one of the best that has ever played this game. If he was–then why hasn’t he won yet? Say what you will but Sandra played the best game. After her “Boston Rob” alliance was wiped out, she was BRILLIANT at how she managed not only to make it to the end, but win it. How did she do it? One of Sandra’s greatest strengths of the game is knowing how to read people. She was correct when she read there was tension between Russell and Coach. She was also right that the jurors wanted to hear her say that she tried to get rid of Evil Russell. If Russel was one of the best in the game, then why did he get rid of Courtney over Sandra. (Same goes for Parvati.) Plus, why did Russell tell both Danielle and Parvati so early in the game that both of them wanted to get rid of eachother? Alicia, you really think those are strategic gameplays by one of the best in the game? LOL. And Parvati. If she was so great then why did she tell Russell that she was going to talk to Danielle about what Russell just told her? That was idiotic of Parvati. How can anyone consider them the best in the game. They don’t know when to shut up. Unlike Sandra who knew when to talk and when not to talk. That’s why Sandra won the game in my book.

      • Alicia

Sandra won because the jury was extremely bitter. Each jury member tore Russell and Parvati apart for their actual gameplay, but there was little said about Sandras supposed strengths. It seems that the new strategy to win this game is to not make big moves so you don’t upset anyone and you get the votes. That’s gonna make this show really boring during the next couple seasons esp if they all start playing like Sandra and last years Natalie. I hate coattail riders! :-)

        u a dork

      • Fin-G8r

After reading this whole page of comments, Lee’s post was dead-on. Sandra was the winner, and she deserved to win because THE JURY VOTED HER THE WINNER. That’s how the game of Survivor works. Just because Russell thinks he was/is the best player because of his bold (yet horribly obnoxious) strategy, doesn’t mean that Sandra had no strategy of her own. She played under the radar, worked hard to keep the target off her back, and yet continued to survive when her entire alliance was voted off. She told Russell to his face that she was against him, but for all his bravado, he was unwilling or unable to get rid of her. Poor, sad Russell… It just proves for the second time in a row that Russell has NO social or end game whatsoever. How can someone who purports to know the game so well be so poorly prepared when facing the jury? Yes, Russell has strong gameplay, and makes for amusing TV (which is probably all CBS cares about at this point – ratings). But he will NEVER win the game, because he refuses to alter or at least adjust his strategy. He is bitter, delusional, and really nothing more than a sheep in wolf’s clothing.

Congratulations Sandra. Whether you are the ‘best’ player ever or not is immaterial, because you are the only two-time winner. Well done.

FInally, enough of this “let America vote for the winner” foolishness. Yeah, right. Our choices (music, art, politics) when given the chance, are always dead on “the best” – correct?? Please…

      • vjcodac26th

How the hell did Sandra ride coattails? She freaking did not have an alliance after the merge. -.-

      • Tayo

Sandra won because she knew what the sore spots of the Jury are and used it. She was alone while Parv and Russell are together. She survived even after the heroes ruined her plans, she survived w/o a proper alliance. She let Russell think she is a non-threat and she hid the fact that she tried to help the Heroes three times.

      • CindyC.

I agree with you completely. That is all part of the game & a huge part that both Pavarti & Russell lack. I still stand behind the fact that Boston Rob is the best player ever & always will. He carried his tribe in All-Stars and again this season – just totally a dominant force mentally in challenges. He could be cutthroat but STILL get jury votes. Sandra is smart enough to know all of this which is why she aligned with him in the beginning. Sandra outwit & outlast ever person out there, and these two can run their mouths all they want – but she still got the 2 checks. She did what she needed to do & deserved the win.

      • lisa08

Well put. Sandra took a lesson from Todd, who won China, and told the jury what they wanted to hear. It also happened to be the truth, so it was easier for her. Parvati could have teamed up with Sandra right around the merge and gotten rid of Russell. That would have won Parvati the game, in a landslide (with Danielle in the final 3). Parvati chose to stay safe with the hated Russell and paid the price for it. If Russell says he lost because he played back-to-back then he should be lobbying just as hard for Parvati’s win to be overturned as well since Amanda fell apart mentally in Micronesia at the end. Amanda should have won Fans vs Faves.

      • lisa08

Alicia, the jury is always upset. This was one of the least bitter juries I’ve seen. I thought they were asking for reasons to vote for a MILLION dollars and Russell basically spit on them. Russell was the most bitter at the final TC. If you want a check that big, you’d better be ready to do something special to earn it. Sandra tried to get rid of Russell and if she had, she would have lost the game to a Hero or Parvati.

      • SANDY M LEWIS

He didn’t win because the jury didn’t have guts enough to give it to the best player ….. which is Russell …

    • t.t

      indeed he is (russel delusional)
i LOVE parvati and put parvati in any past season had she played the way she did in this she would’ve been the deserving winner she played the best game to ever get played in survivor history better then rob in all stars, better than cirie in micronesia, better than todd in china, yul in cook islands, even tom in palau

    • born yesterday

He is the best thing on this dumb show. Only an idiot will vote for that dumb bimbo. Now she is a millionaire and the world will go down the drain.

      • Deb

No way the jury would have given Russell a single vote; he made alliances with each of them and then broke them. This is as much a social game and a physical game and he was too controlling, too sure of himself and a legend in his own mind. I wanted Boston Rob to win. He gets the game. Parvati dominated in challenges but aligned with the wrong person. Russell was convinced he was going to win so he brought the worst choices to the final three. I was glad to see Sandra win…she played a good game. I love the idea of a Survivor with Boston Rob as one team captain and Russell as the other…I see bloodshed.

    • Logic

Those two need to get married, or at least their own reality show.

    • ME

OMG, that’s what I was thinking. I actually really enjoyed their bickering. It was cute!

      • AcaseofGeo

These 2 actually have awesome chemistry! Wow. How funny. I’m a Sandra fan ALL THE WAY, but these 2 played a better game. I don’t think Russell gave proper credit to social skills in the game or he woulda won either season.

      • Ben Miller

Their chemistry is good. People know they can trust, confide in, and conquer with someone when they realize they share similar mental levels. They were out-perceiving/ thinking the entire game and they knew it. It’s exciting when you meet someone so much like you in how you approach wherever it is you meet. It’s going to be sad watching the show knowing it’s probably Parvati’s last time (3 times must be trying; plus, not being able to win because of how good you are must be discouraging)and Russell won’t be back for a while, if ever…They’ve really shown how to take the game to a whole new level, but everyone else is still trying to figure out how to be 4/5 as good. After having seen Tiger Woods, it’s not going to be exciting watching Phil Mickelson play.

      • Tajah

I said the same thing further down!! Chemistry and give them a show!

    • shdrew

ITA! They are absolutely adorable together.

so true, they would be great on the amazing race :)i love how likable Parv makes Russ appear. she does have mad social skills!

That is a fantastic idea! They would kick ass on Amazing Race!

      • Gina

I agree! Parv and Russell should do “Amazing Race!” They would kick butt!!!

I thought it should be Russell and his WIFE doing the amazing race. It would be interesting to be a fly on the wall there.

      • betsy

No, no, no, no and no. I can’t have the toothless troll ruin another one of my favorite reality shows. He can take his illusions of grandeur and go back to whatever cave he crawled out of.

      • Terry

I really like Russell and am glad he was on this year, otherwise both editons woulda been pretty boring( and if he hadn’t been on either one of the editions, I think we would see way different winners, Sandra and whatshername were awarded for who they weren’t not what they did). But I hate when we start making stars out of these reality contestants. Russell was good cause he came out of nowhere. I think Survivor needs to stay away from the all star concept. It is best when you have an element of the unknown. Tjhe same with The Amazing Race. I used to watch it all the time, but when Boston Rob came on, I skipped that season and only watch it occassionally now.

  • Brenda

Awesome interview!!! I so wish either one of them would have won….Sandra did NOT deserve the win.

  • Kris

LOVED it. I love Parvati Shallow and this was the first time I saw Russell and did not despise him. That was funny!

    • betsy

      He’s totally infatuated by her.

  • TorontoTom

Russell is an odd little man but he is right – THERE IS A FLAW IN THE GAME. Too many great seasons have been ruined by a bitter jury voting AGAINST a player who flat out played the game. Outwit, outplay, outlast. I wish the jury would be reminded of the moto of the game so that we might be spared of all the “You lied to me…” nonsense. The two people in the video above outplayed everyone. One of them should have won.

    • Gator

There is no flaw. No rules have changed since the beginning. Except adding the hidden immunity idol, which is the only reason Russell got as far as he did in both his seasons. The TRUE winners of Survivor know that the social aspect is a huge part of the game. Who cares if you get to the end a thousand times. If everyone hates you, you will lose every time. You are not the best player unless you actually win. The jury is going to be different on every season, a real winner will get to know the people on the jury and play to them. Russell can’t get past his ego long enough to figure out that it is about things other than himself.

      • Snsetblaze

You hit it 100% on the head. Sandra may be “lippy” but she still has some social game – its just not the flirty social game Parvati had. Other than when she was defending herself, she generally was not nasty to anyone’s face other than Russell. She did not call people useless or dumbasses to their face. She was not hated like Russell was. Russell – you also weren’t that good at the challenges.

      • Lee

Parvati was right when she told Russell you can’t change the game, you have to change yourself. But Russel is too pigheaded to understand that. That’s why he’ll never win. And I really believe Sandra is a very underrated player. As I said before, she is great at reading the other players and knowing when to talk. Plus, she game the best performance at the final tribal council because she knew what the jurors wanted to hear and told them it, which was she tried to get rid of Evil Russell. She could’ve easily blamed Candice for not helping her get rid of Evil Russell, but she didn’t say that. That’s probably why all of the Heroes voted for her. Sandra deserved to win.

      • montegutdude

The theme for this season was NOT “Outwit, Outplay, Outlast” It was changed to “Return, Revenge, Redemption.” It’s a real drag to read constantly that Russell needed to be nicer to people and that’s why he lost. With a season slogan of “Heroes vs. Villains” and “revenge” being one of the qualites on this season’s logo, its a shame in the end that the jury vote was based on popularity. You would think especially with a cast of folks who have played the game before that they would have a respect for the game that would supercede personal feelings. As things turn out, not so much or Russell Hantz would be a million dollars richer.

      • @ Lee

The only way Sandra could read people is if they were an Outback menu! You want to talk about being able to read people? What about Russel’s ability to read Tyson to get him to change his vote and then know to give Parvati the HII. What about his ability to read the heroes and play along that it was a girls’ alliance in order for JT to give him his HII? What about Parvati reading Amanda knowing that she wasn’t going to be voted out and instead it would be Sandra or Jerri? Russel unfortunately thought that since he was playing with “All-Stars” who have played the game before, that they would have more respect for gameplay. Little did he know what big egos he was dealing with- there was no way those “stars” were going to let someone they’d never seen before beat them. So they vote for Sandra because that’s the easiest for them to swallow and everyone eats it up proclaiming that she played the best “social game”. “Playing the best social game” is a term Jeff made up last year to explain why Natalie won last year!

    • Brian

Couln’t agree more with your assessment. A bitter jury full of egos truly skew the game and render an inappropriate verdict. It’s a game for crying out loud! A TV show made to entertain…not real life!!!

    • A

These people don’t see that Sandra won because she’s more on the Heroes side than Villains. If Russell or Parvati knew Sandra was partnering up with the Heroes side behind their backs, then they would have voted Sandra off before reaching final 3. That shows how strategic Sandra was and that shows how blinded Russell and Parvati were.

is sandra wanted to keep russell around then that would have shown a strategic plan. instead she tried the whole game to get rid of the person she needed to win. she herself admitted that she could sway no ones opinion. she won off the bitterness of the other players. that is the plain truth. i have never seen a more bitter group of people who seem to think there is a line of when lies, backstabbing and gameplaying is ok and not. this is a game and sandra won because the best player burned the others so bad they coudn’t get over themselves. the ultimate villain lost, but that is the beauty if it… losing proves it!! who needs the other 900,000, russell you are the ultimate survivor PIMP!!

      • Terry

I agree Jimmy. And probably the worst is Rupert. He admits that as a hero he lied and backstabbed, yet he gets mad when a “villain” does it? I liked that he said Russell was on the villain side for a reason, yet he couldn’t respect Russell’s gameplay even though he was doing exactly what was expected. If Rupert would get his lips off Sandra’s crusty anus long enough, he might ask himself why if she was so great he didn’t help her vote Russell off. He thought Russell was a miserable human being, yet when Russell offered to form and alliance with him, boom, Rupert’s his buddy. Then Russell(and Sandra) vote him off and Russell’s a jerk again. And if Sandra’s so great, why’d she vote Rupert off?

I think that winning over the jury IS a part of the game play. If russell wasn’t such a gigantic ass he might have a chance at winning. I hated him. I would have voted against him too- EVERYTHING is part of the game- including how you treat the others on the island. You reap what you sow….

  • I MISS SURVIVOR TALK

Dalton!! Please do it full time again next season. Courtney could co-host! Even if you Skype, I miss your post show interviews.

    • D

      Yeah, Dalton.

    • KC

      oh God Courtney? Please NO!!!

      • Annie

Agreed!! And love the idea of Courtney, watched Ponderosa this year just to see her and the others. Was more entertaining than the players left.

  • Jean Guy Levesque

Russell is the greatest player ever and Colby is such a loser. Vive la Quebec!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Matt

Ughhhh Quebec. Gross. And I’m Canadian

      • George

Matt, that’s unfair. You’re all gross.

      • .

lol American opinions are the the number 1 most disregarded thing in canada.

      • Rick

Go Quebec! (And I’m from Toronto!)

      • Celimene

Half-Quebecoise American and proud of it!

      • Really??

To add to these remarks about Canada…Do Canadian’s really look like they’re portrayed on South Park?

  • Lisa

The most likeable I’ve ever seen Russell (and that’s not saying much). One of the biggest reasons this season was such a hit is the variety of strong personalities out there. I hope casting for Nicaragua replicates that!

  • fordham

Hopefully next season is a final two and the final three is over for good. If Sandra and Natalie winning back to back isn’t enough of a wake up call, I don’t know what is.

    • Groo

Russell didn’t get any votes, so it kinda was a final two. :)

      • D

        That’s what I was thinking.

  • Mori

Loved watching these two bicker! Very entertaining!

  • Nick Aragua

The return of Survivor Talk! Hopefully permanently!

  • God

These 2 are idiots. I have spoken.

    • Jesus

      Amen!!

    • Cookie

Have you ever created anyone with a bigger ego than Russell Hantz? Can you smite him so we never have to hear from or about him again? Amen.

      • KC

        Yes, I have. Boston Rob.

    • Allah

      DIE GOD.

    • Sarah Palin

There is no God. Love ya Russell!
