Broadway’s Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark musical has been the punching bag of the theater world for the past couple of years, as the production has bounded from delay to delay. Two months ago, Evan Rachel Wood, who was set to star, dropped out of her role as Mary Jane. Then just a few weeks ago, The Good Wife star Alan Cumming made his exit as the Green Goblin, leaving just little-known Reeve Carney, who’s set to portray Spider-Man, in the mix. All that, and the show hadn’t even neared rehearsals yet!
But there is potentially good news for the future of the show on the horizon: New York Post theater columnist Michael Riedel is reporting that the in-question production is indeed on, with rehearsals starting this summer, previews beginning in October, and an official opening in November. The column also claims that the production has a new Green Goblin in Patrick Page, and producers are apparently seeing potential Mary Jane replacements. Producers for the show, and its publicity team, have not made any official announcements.
So whaddya think, PopWatchers? Do you think Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark will ever see the light of day? And if it does, will you still want to see it? Sound off!

I hate to be cynical, but I’ll believe this ish when I see it.
Haven’t we suffered enough with SM3? The only way this could be worse is if they incorporate an emo dance number.
…or if U2 writes the music. Oh, hey wait.
Where’s Doctor Doom when you REALLY need him to destroy the world?
This hereby confirms that pop does and is currently eating itself. Spider-Man? The musical? Actors on strings? This sounds like a colossal f*ck up beyond imagination. And speaking of imagination….how about producers rely on the writer’s using theirs to create new and original ideas for the stage. God forbid we get something real along the lines of “Rent” or “Angels in America”.
Patrick freaking Page?! I may need to see this now, and swallow my pride. For those who don’t know, Patrick Page is one of America’s best classical actors.
Reeve Carney is amazing! This show has the ingredients to be something special!
Spiderman has a great production team and will definitely make it on Broadway — I absolutely want to see it!
Julie Taymor is one of the most creative directors of the contemporary theatre. She will reinvent the Spiderman myth in such way that it will not only be visually fantastic, but also emotionally and intellectually powerful. The greatest truths in society are found in its myths and stories, like Spiderman, that get reimagined by new artists. It will be nothing like the films, thankfully.
