Matt Damon's 'Adjustment Bureau' trailer: Five things I don't understand

Filed under: Movies and tagged: , ,

1. What’s the deal with the guys in the old-timey hats?
2. Why is Emily Blunt barefoot in the bathroom at the beginning?
3. Is John Slattery a magician? (This question applies both to his character and him in real life.)
4. Are the aforementioned men in hats actually capable of freezing time, Out of This World style?
5. What can I do to get the theme song from Out of This World out of my head now?

Take a look for yourself — and check out EW’s enlightening Summer Preview piece on the movie — and then let me know: What else confuses you about this trailer, embedded after the jump?

This reminds me of Fringe for some reason.

That’s what I was thinking. The Men in Hats remind me of the Observers, but with more hair.

    • Elizabeth

      Yup…

    • Jane

Or “The Box” – I almost thought that was Frank Langella for a moment in the trailer.

  • Joey

I didn’t know this movie had a sci-fi feeling to it. I’m pumped!

  • Ceballos

This actually looks pretty cool. I didn’t know what this movie was about at all, so I enjoyed the sci fi-ish twist after the meet-cute beginning.

Also, Emily Blunt is barefoot because she was obviously anticipating the foot race she’d have later in the trailer with Matt Damon’s character.

Finally, the old-timey hats are there becasue it’s plain silly to cast John Slattery in something and NOT put him in old-timey clothes.

He was born to wear a fedora. So lucky that he decided to become an actor so he could even in this post-Kennedy age. :-)

    Very Fringe-y/Observer-y. Interesting.

If I wasn’t confused by the trailer, I would not see the movie!
It does remind me of Fringe, maybe it’s because of the strange men with hats!

is the subway route to Shell Beach

I thought I was the only one that liked Dark City :-)

      • harry

dark city was awesome I have it at home on DVD.

The ‘men in hats’ are agents of fate…Matt Damons character is messing with fate and like us Observers the agents of fate must sometimes take actions into their own hands….

Looks good – kind of Eternal Sunshine-y, but slicker. And I was going to say that she’s barefoot because she’s a dancer, and that’s what dancers do. They’re free spirits. They don’t wear shoes.
But I agree with Ceballos about the hats.

“The boy is important” it is his fate.

I know it’s based on Philip K. Dick’s short story but it really reminded me of Dark City.

My answer for #1: Because old-timey hats are awesome! I wish I could pull off the fedora look…sadly, I can not. Cabby-hats (aka flat-caps; jeff-caps) I look OK in, but fedoras (which are my favorite) look incredibly silly on my head (sigh).

Not the most original storyline in the world (Fringe, Twilight Zone, Dark City)… but something about the trailer still makes me want to see it.

    • gerritv

I think it’s based on a Philip K Dick short story called ‘The Adjustment Team’which was first published in Orbit Science Fiction, Sept-Oct 1954, No.4.

      Thank you Wikipedia!

Actually Fringe isnt an original idea. This movie is based from a short story written by Philip k Dick and was written WAY before Fringe. If you like Fringe you should check him out.

  • harry

    very cool!!!

  • thesaurusrs

It’s not too much to ask that a movie be charming AND cool is it? I want this movie to be the one. I also want Matt Damon to be the one, but that’s another story…

  • Britt

looks interesting but, like many have already said, it reminds me of Fringe.
Also, I love that John Slattery is getting parts (Loved seeing him as Howard Stark) but I’d love seeing him carry his own movie.

    • anne

Me, too. I could not agree more with this statement.

  • Ruby

This looks good. I love Matt Damon, I really like Emily Blunt and I enjoy movies that deal with the discussion of fate vs. free will.
