Colin Farrell and Toni Collette cast in 'Fright Night' remake. Fang-tastic or Sucks?

fright-nightImage Credit: Chris Hatcher/PR Photos; Bob Charlotte/PR PhotosThe ’80s have somehow gone from the decade everyone pretended to forget to the decade everyone’s pretending to remember. Whereas previously, those ten years of pop culture were derided as a wasteland of legwarmers, pastel alligator shirts, and big hair, now big-budget reincarnations of Clash of the Titans, The Karate Kid, and Tron are being marketed to teenagers who were nine years away from being a gleam in their daddy’s eye when the originals came out.

Another to add onto the growing list is the upcoming remake of the super-fun 1985 vampire flick Fright Night, which just got huge casting news in the form of Colin Farrell and Toni Collette. The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision blog reports that Farrell has signed on to play the bloodsucker-next-door originally portrayed with suave menace by Chris Sarandon, and Collette will play the already-cast Anton Yelchin’s single mom.

Honestly, I think I really like both of these casting choices. Collette, if her maternal roles in The United States of Tara and The Sixth Sense indicate anything, will probably bring an added depth and sympathy to the mother seduced by the vampire’s charms that was somewhat absent in the original. And Farrell, who recently has been off finding himself in more introverted roles in smaller movies like In Bruges and Ondine, will finally get to chew some scenery and use his considerable Celtic charisma for the purposes of evil.

Are you excited about these Fright-ful developments? Those of you who love the original, do you find your nostalgia for it enhancing or detracting from your excitement for a remake? And finally, where is Chris Sarandon and why hasn’t someone given him an awesome villainous comeback role yet?

Again with the remakes!! Come on! Chris Sarandon was the sh-t in the original! The Lost Boys better not be remade!

    • CKing

Agreed, no one can top Chris Sarandon…as for the Lost boys being remade…I will cry…that is my favorite movie of all time, I don’t want it ruined by a remake

  • AuntieMM

This movie did not have to be remade….for cryin’ out loud doesn’t anyone in Hollywood have an original brain in their body? So who’s going to do Roddy McDowell’s part (biting tongue here)?

  • Many

Bring on the Teen Wolf remake!

  • besimon

I loved the original. And the cast sounds incredible. But I’m curious too on who they will cast in the Roddy McDowell part.

just don’t cast any 3-D or CGI. Evil’s transformation was great in the original.

Holy Crap I forgot about (don’t call me) Evil!

      • outside agitator

yeah, he was great. movies should be remade if something can be added. but the actors, story and fx were fine the first time around. just a Hollywood money grab for suckers.

      • CineCzarina

OMG I loved that line, and that actor. Iam not sure how I feel about this remake business. I LOVE THE ORIGINAL.

    A) Fright Night doesn’t need to be re-made.
    B) While Toni Collette would probably be fine as the mother, Colin Farrell has nowhere near enough menace to play Chris Sarandon’s role. Nowhere near. And I like Colin Farrell, just not for this role.

They should cast Chris Sarandon as Peter Vincent.

A problem with this remake is, will the Peter Vincent thing work?

It worked in the 80s because horror show hosts like Peter Vincent were part of TV 20 years earlier. Does that hold true today?

Were there horror show movie hosts on TV like Vincent in the 90s? I have no clue.

Did the producers actually see the original. The main cast were young, so who are the middle age cast this time around supose to play. Unless Colin is the vampire and Toni Collette plays the kids mom. There is nobody who can step into Roddy McDowells shoes or cape.

    • beck

Thats what the story says, Toni= mother. Colin= Vampire….

  • Maniaical Laughter

This remake is not necessary. New ideas please!

  • Emoney

I’m not in favor of remakes in general, but if they’re going to do this, I think Farrel and Collette are great choices. I also wonder where the heck Chris Sarandon is and why he isn’t in more stuff.

They should cast Elvira in the Peter Vincent role…

    • George

      LOL. Love it!!! Yes Elvira!!!

  • Darrell

Hollywood is PATHETIC!!!…how long until they make remakes of remakes?…get some new ideas, IDIOTS!!!

    • Rockbird

Yes!! Elvira would be perfect casting!

  • Dixie

How about Bruce Campbell as himself?

    • Sundevilsarah

      that is an amazing idea!

    • CKing

Oh yeah…Bruce Campbell would add at least one good thing to this remake

    • Felix

Bruce Campbell would be so cool in the peter vincent role. Think evil dead series, are the charisma/sarcasm he brings to every role.

  • beck

totally unnecessary. Fright Night is classic 80′s horror, no-one should mess with it. Peter Vincent (the great vampire killer) cannot be replaced, EVER. Remakes get ruined with over use of CGI. 80′s horror had fantastic (funny as hell) special effects. Don’t forget the S.E make up team!!

  • Sundevilsarah

I’m a big, big fan of the original and I’m excited for the remake. I think Colin Farrel would be a good choice because the seduction needs an update. They need to expand the role a bit for the girlfriend so she can come off as less annoying and not shy away from the real scares. I am a little worried about who they will cast for Roddy McDowell. He was a legend.
