'Bones': Scoop from Emily Deschanel and creator Hart Hanson

Categories: Bones, Television

Hart-HansonImage Credit: Michael Buckner/Getty ImagesBones fans, brace yourselves. I come bearing gifts from an exceptionally spoiler-ific conference call that star Emily Deschanel and creator Hart Hanson had with reporters this afternoon, in which the pair revealed several nuggets regarding the series’ finale two episodes of the season. But before we get to the spoilers served piping hot, here are a few (relatively safe) tid-bits to nibble on:

++ Hanson sees Angela and Hodgins’ relationship (or Hodgela, as he called them — yes, he went there) as completely different than Bones and Booth’s. “We’ve always known that Angela and Hodgins belong together.… The scene where they talk about how they broke up has existed since they broke up. It wasn’t in a jail cell — I didn’t know where it would happen — but that scene has been written for a long time, where they realize why they let eachother go. It just felt like the right time to get them back together. I do sometimes think of Hodgela — Hodgela? [he scoffs at himself, as Deschanel says he's now "coined a phrase"] — of Hodgins and Angela as a steam valve. It lets off some pressure [that fans build up watching Bones and Booth go back and forth]. But it’s its own story.”
++ Hanson has what could be the final scenes of Bones already written. “I do know where it’s going. It’s just how many steps between now and then are that I don’t know.”
++ The show will (as of now) keep its Thursdays at 8 p.m. timeslot. But things can change.
++ They once seriously explored a crossover with Lie to Me, but it didn’t work out. A crossover is not completely off the table. “It’s one of those fortuitous things. We’ll see if the network wants it and has the will for it to make it happen,” Hanson said.
++ A Bones movie was once talked about, but there are no plans now.
++ Hanson said six scripts exist for next season and eight stories are being developed. “As I was writing the season finale, the writer’s room was churning out the stories for next season. We’re quite a machine.”

This next part is not safe for spoiler phobes. So shoo!
++ This week’s episode opens with Brennan’s Gravedigger-related nightmare. “That’s part of the reason she’s questioning the whole murder business,” Deschanel said.
++ Ryan O’Neal reprises his role as Brennan’s father in this week’s episode. And “he’s not just there for moral support,” teased Hanson.
++ Deschanel said that what happens in the season finale has as much impact on Brennan and Booth’s relationship as the 100th episode did.
++ During the end of the season, Brennan will be questioning her field.
++ Hanson anticipates that this year’s finale will cause a stir among fans. “I guess the short answer is yes. We try to keep everyone interested and a season finale is a very good place and a natural place to change the direction of a series. And, you know, fifth season, you gotta do that.”
++ Don’t expect a lot of closure in the season finale, even with the Gravedigger storyline. “Closure is not the word I would use as we barrel forward into season 6,” Hanson said. “I think it’s overrated,” Deschanel added.

More scoop in when this week’s Ask Ausiello hits the Web. But until then, what are your predictions for the finale, PopWatchers? And would you like the idea of a movie or (non-cartoon) crossover? Personally, I’m game as long as neither involve Booth getting another brain tumor.

I’m seriously not looking forward to yet another season of will they/won’t they. I REALLY hope they don’t go there again. At this stage in their relationship, it’s stupid. I don’t know what’s gonna happen in the finale, but it will definitely determine whether I continue watching afterward.

    • Ian

A crossover with Lie To Me would be amazing. I know I’ve seen Lie To Me use that same FBI conference room set. I’d really like to see B&B interacting with Cal Lightman. Could be genius.

      • Ashley

Great idea! That would be awesome!

    • JM

      Agree!

    • Chelsea

Oh, hush! Will they, won’t they is part of the charm! And we all know they SHOULD! There’s not much that could make me turn them off… I wait steadily in anticipation!

      • April

So true. For one brief sec i thought this could be the last season and i about cried. NOTHING shy of a cancellation could make me stop watching.

      • grant

Yeah, I thought that too. Made me sad!! Thank god it’s not though.

I didn’t start watching the show until a few months ago and I watched all 5 seasons in a span of about 2 weeks.

    • jennifer

i want them to sleep together and get it over with, it was to much of a tease with “the sum of the pieces” and now its almost like they hate each other.and there’s only one ep. left.

      • JCW

If they did not go through the issues here, then this would just become another cheap thrill program. The interactions of B&B are unique and intelligent – exactly what their characters are suppose to be. This makes it more of a love story than a soap, which I am increasingly thankful for. Almost every other crime series out there hits soap level by season 4.

    • Sara

Agreed. What happens in the finale will determine whether I continue watching Bones. I love Bones, I really really do, but I’ve had enough. If the fifth season ends and they’re still doing this will they/won’t they crap, I’m done. Either they get together or I’m out.
And none of this “if they get together it’ll ruin the show” bull either. Pam and Jim have been together on the Office for 3 years and they’re one of the best parts of the show.

    • chymom

I have a fear by reading this and some other place were the writers talk about the show. That they WONT go there. They will have Booth move on. That in the end he and Dr. B. will just be good friends.

I HOPE THATS NOT THE CASE. I WANT TO SEE THEM GROW CLOSER.

But they did say they want to change the way the show is going. So who knows. Maybe we get lucky and Bones brings a child home with her. I don’t know but I know for sure somethings big going to happen at the start of season six.

    • Annika

The get together next season I know that for sure. So I am cool with waiting for next season. Plus I know what the entire ending of the whole show will be. So I know they get together anyway.

      • erika

How do you know how next season ends?

    • michael cifelli

i agree. i think after five years its time to be adults and put them together. just cause they are together doesnt mean it will be boring. and i dont want them together only for them to divorce or have one of them die. i get enough reality in my own life. how about letting them be adult. nobody would have waited for five years. heck, people dont wait 24 hours to hook up now a days. not that i agree with that especially now that i have two daughters. but my god its time. let them be together and find story lines. it will actually be new. its not often relationships happen or even work on tv. so how about being something new and refreshing and let them be together and marry. and actually be happy. that would be a new one. if they mess this up when they see each other after a year, and they mess the writing up and we start all over with them being awkward or with other people, or not having the same feelings. i cant sit through another season like that again after five years. they better do something or im done. and a lot of peple i know will be done to. and they better not cross over “lie to me” to Bones. lie to me is a great show by itself. why would they fix something thats not broke. these writers are really full of themselves.

      • Angie G

I agree they should get together.I don’t think it would turn this show into a soap opera at all as long as the relationship doesn’t end in tragedy, because that is what ends up making it like a soap opera..I watch bones evey time its on just because I want to see those two get together and the reruns on TNT ..I think it would be wonderful to disclose how Bones and Parker would develop their relationship if she became his stepmother, and Booth and Bones have already been in a love affair for years why not make it official…The way they love each other already makes the show worth watching if they did get married the writers could play off that…..Could you imagine Booth and Bones going off on somebody if something happened to Parker…Oh yea, I think they should be some focus on Parker and Bones becoming close, there hasn’t been that’s kind of why I think these writers are not going to let Booth and Bones be together and I think that would really be Terrible….Please Let Booth be the one that Teaches Bones how to believe in love, faith ,and trust he is however the one who has already opened the door for her she loves him she just don’t know how to trust herself, this is the basis you ran the show on and if you don’t allow this to happen well then you messed it all up…..Noone will want to watch…..I know I won’t….

      • Kristen M.

THANK YOU! I couldn’t have put it better myself. They have been dragging this storyline WAAY too long. I mean I thought that THIS season would have been it. And it should have. Now I’m seriously debating whether or not I’m going to watch it. Okay fine I’m going to watch it, but not necessarily on the day it airs. And I’m a stickler for that.

      • slclove123

Angie G! You could have not said that better!! It is exactly what needs to happen in this show if they plan on truly developing Booth’s/Bones relationship. Since day one, Booth has been the one helping Bones character believe in things other than science. It’s the basis of the show – “Ying/Yang” total opposites but united as one with love. If Season 6 ends up starting with them being awkward and starting new relationships I am also done…I will watch Lie to Me and never watch Bones again!! ARRRGGGHHH!!

  • furiousk

What’s going to happen to Sweets and Daisy? They had this epic proposal, and nobody’s mentioned it for the past couple episodes. I mean, no small throwaway lines like “Lancelot and I met with a wedding planner!!” or “Daisy and I can’t, we’re meeting with a cake artist,” that kind of thing…very weird…

    • Coz

Engaged doesn’t necessarily mean getting hitched next week. With any luck, their relationship won’t meet the same end as Hodgela in season two. Or at the start of season four. I’d like to see a happy couple on TV for once.

      • Amber

Maybe, while in the Malooku Islands, Sweets will show up down there to be with Daisy, b/c, you know, he’s “Mr. Adventurous”

  • Stacie

I just started watching this show this season. I feel like it’s ending. It’s not ending is it?

    • Marie

It’s been renewed for two more seasons.

      • Liz

It was renewed for 2 more seasons (5 & 6). No confirmation after season 6.

  • obezyana

I will watch another season anyway. C’mon, these guys are like my family )

  • Lemon

I’m going to be that person… it’s “bearing” gifts, not “baring.” Although if you want to bare gifts, by all means, feel free. ;)

    • Sandra Gonzalez

      Thank you, Lemon.

    • Erin Zans

Ha, nice. And great piece! Now I just have to keep myself from getting too invested in the season end-er I want so my brain doesn’t explode from disappointment :P

    • helga

I wonder what it is about a person when they feel the need to correct someone when all it does is make someone feel stupid.

      • tony

kinda funny but thats what bones would do…

  • Sarah D

Two more seasons guaranteeed?! When did I miss that announcement? I’m so excited, it has sort of felt like it’s all ending. I’m glad Angela and Hodgins finally got back together and I’m glad to see Ryan O’neil again, I LOVE him in this role!

    • Marie

It was announced a few months ago. I really enjoy Ryan O’Neal, too, but I seriously could do without Angela and Hodgins. I never cared about their relationship.

    • Amy

It’s only been renewed for season 5 and 6.

  • Lee

It amazes me how much these people can say the same nothing sentences about these ridiculous annual finales – “oh, it will change things” – “oh, we like to keep them guessing” or “oh, we are going to shake things up” – so absurd as though I am supposed to actually sit around for months wondering what is going to happen in a television show when it comes back in the Fall.

They all do this – I had hoped when I first watched this show, when it was really well written and interesting, that they would not do the same formula re: their romantic leads. But, alas, here we are with the same idiotic “will they, won’they” stuff. I’m certainly not sitting on the edge of my seat.

I might be if the seasons were anywhere near as terrific as the first three seasons – now, I’m just kind of watching when it is on and sometimes forget. Never used to.

Shows do have a shelf life – I personally think it hits the wall after four years.

    • Bye-Bye

If it’s that “uninteresting” why read the article and comment on it? Let those of us who enjoy it have positive discussions about the show and the characters we love! I think the writers do a great job. Even a so-so episode of Bones is waaayyy better than anything else out there! It’s great to have a show that involves mystery with a little comedy and some great characters!

      • Amy

Um, how about not commenting to someone who has a different opinion than you? Why read and comment to them? This is a public forum for positive, mixed and negative comments.

      • Rachel

um maybe cause replying to just any random post on the first page will get you also on the first page and not on the last page where, by then, people have gotten bored, stopped reading and your post would go unnoticed. Bye-Bye in a genius, you Amy are rude :)

      • Nate

Amy you’re, for lack of a nicer term, an idiot. You can’t tell someone not to comment on a persons post who has a different opinion to them and then go on to say that this is “a public forum for positive, mixed and negative comments.” If it is infact a public forum for positive, mixed and negative comments, Bye-Bye should be allowed to counter someone elses opinion with a different one of their own. And if not, then Bye-Bye is still in the right because your point is lost.

  • cb

I still think this show is great!! I mean yes, they change things up, but if they got together right now, why would we watch?? I do think they could find a way to get the leads together and still make it interesting….BUT all this about the finale makes me excited where they will take the story next season. I personally want Bones to be on at least until season 7 so I will just choose to enjoy the ride…and have fun :)

  • Caroline W

I LOVE THIS SHOW. However, I’m a new follower so I’ve jammed all 5 seasons to this point in the last 3 weeks. Honestly, wouldn’t care what they do with they do with the show. I would love to explore them being together, but if that were to happen…they would have to have issues and break up. Right? The show wouldn’t be good if it was just romance bliss. If they didn’t get together, but kept the sexual tension..it would remain the same tried and true awesomeness. I have faith in the Bones writers so I’m here for the ride! :)

  • Erin

I love what Hart Hanson does with Bones. He can do no wrong by me. Well except if Bones ends with Booth dying and Brennan all alone – like Chris & Rita on Silk Stalkings (the best cop show on the 90s) – I will die too. I like the fact that Booth’s health is still up in the air (as alluded to by Tamara Taylor in a previous interview). One of the best things that Hart Hanson does is he never diminishes the capacity for opportunity – he never writes any possibility off. Will Booth & Brennan get together? Will Booth’s brain tumour come back? Will Booth & Brennan keep working together? Will Brennan have Booth’s baby? Will Booth go back to the Army?… That’s a very clever skill to have.

  • marc

wish you could bring back Dr Zack eddy

    • jennifer

me too they did that one we’re he broke out said he never killed anyone and never brought it up again. dont you think sweets would want to tell someone

  • amy

scared the s*** out of me when i read the series final but i read and and i think it was just a spelling mistake correct me if im wrong

    • Tara

Scared me too, Amy. I’ll just cry if the series is over. I’m still trying to figure out if it is…

    • MJ

Holy crap no joke…that was NOT a cool typo. I read it like 3 times.

  • Nicky

I fear the season finale, only one thing could make me stop watching the show and that is if they both go their own way with some one else.
I so hope that’s not gonna happen in season 6! But I fear the cliffhanger will be Brennan leaving,..

    • marc

how could brennan leave she’s the show think they need to make her human and actually learn to love and really be with and want booth. so there probably going to be some interum boy and girl friends so that brennan can be more human love that ange and hodges got married would love for them to bring bck on Dr addie

      • Nicky

I did not mean leave the show, I ment leave the job.

    • chymom

I fear this too. They have done the whole they cant date due to work. They did the datting some one like you cause I can’t date you. Now its time to let them find there way to each other. The road is never smoth. Bones isn’t the best at love. And Booths not the best at reading her thougths about love. There are all kinds of story lines that could come from that.

But like you I fear that Booth will show up at the pool with a ring on his hand or at least some one he is going to marry. Some one that he doesn’t have to explane things to. Some one who gets his jokes. Some one who has been to war and knows what he feels like. Some one thats not Bones.

I will watch the show if they do this but only to see if they keep the true friendship and love in them. I have loved enough shows like JAG, Charimed, Numb3rs, and Bones enough to know that what the fan’s want is not what we get.

I just hope that we wont get kncked on our butts by the way it goes. I loved the part were he went AWOL to see her off. Also where he wanted to kiss her but didn’t. I had hoped after the 100th ep. that things would change for the better. She would see her wrong and fix it. But now with the comment that this is the next step after that show. That fear of whats going to happen is holding my heart and it beats a little faster the more I read.

  • Monica

Pretty sure the finale will have Brennan taking off to get her head together after she fails to send the gravedigger to jail. She is going to feel so bad that she let everyone down, especially if the gravedigger goes after her father and they fail to save him but get the digger in the process. Can happen. I still think Booth and Brennan could be together without giving up anything on the show. Just behind the curtain so to speak with little touches here and there, come on what would be so hard about that!!

    • Tom

I just watched the 5TH season finale. I was about to break my T.V., 2 couples go different ways and 1 goes on vacation. HUH???????

      • Lynn

TOM: not all of us have watched the 5th season finale. actually, it’s says its on june 18th soooo, do you have a special way of watching tv from the future? but, please for all of us, don’t tell us what happens when you do see the june 18th show. it’s called a “spoiler” and not all of us want them. we like to actually not know until it happens. hope you can understand. PEACE! :-)

      • Steven

I agree Tom, I was like “ehhhh????!!!”

Lynn: I think if you look again, you will see it says Bones returns June 18th. Thursday’s episode was the season finale.

        Bones \ Returns Fri, Jun 18th 8\7c

The Beginning In The End – Season Finale, Season 5: Ep 22, 43:52

If it starts up on the 18th with season six, I will be very happy.

      • chymom

I agree how much heartach do they want us Bone/Booth fans to have.

      • michael cifelli

tom i agree….i loved the fact that he fled to see her off. and everyone is leaving or going on vacation. they are flirting with disaster. i see how much everyone loves this show. these two are adults. let booth and dr brennan be together for gods sake. it would be new that a relationship turns to marriage and it works. wow what a new concept. it is for tv anywyay. house is a show i love snd will watch it even though i hated what they did. they changed everything. the writers were so brilliant that they ripped apart a team that had chemistry. which shows dont usually have and thats why they dont make it. and the ones that do have chemistry make it. on house they ruined the story line, went on strike, and they broke up the team and let cameron leave the show. wow. what brilliance. now the show hasnt seen the ratings it once had. lost part of its audience. i hope they dont do that with bones. they better be carefull. or it will be off the air. and that would be a shame.

  • daisym0m

I just enjoy this show so much. I’ve read the books and that makes it more alive for me. Kathy Reichs is a wonderful writer. I hope there will be more; but, if it has to go, I will watch all the reruns.
