'Green Lantern' on-set photo: Peter Sarsgaard's forehead will haunt your nightmares

Green Lantern is one of those superhero movies that could kind of go either way, tonally speaking. The character’s a cocky test pilot with a magic ring and a frisky love-hate relationship with his boss, which sounds like an Iron Man-ish bouncy action-comedy. But Green Lantern’s got a history of dark story arcs, the sort of stuff that lends itself more to Dark Knight-style grit.

Well, we’ve gotten some insight into the nature of the movie. On the strength of this picture, which shows Peter Sarsgaard in makeup to play GL nemesis Hector Hammond, I’d say we’re looking at a category 5 Tornado of Horrifying Grotesquerie. I’m not sure what freaks me out more: the fact that his brain looks ready to punch through his forehead, or the fact that he appears to have committed the cardinal sin of growing a mustache without really COMMITTING to it. The neck fat doesn’t help. (Admittedly, Sarsgaard may look less freaky when he’s actually in costume, though I like the idea of a supervillain who walks around in a T-shirt.)

Besides the fact that I will be unable to sleep for weeks, this photo makes me a teensy bit excited for next year’s Green Lantern. On the Dafoe/Ledger scale of superhero movie villains, Hammond looks much closer to Dark Knight‘s Joker than to Spider-Man‘s Green Power Ranger Goblin. What do you think, PopWatchers? Green Lantern fans, is this how you pictured Hector Hammond? Green Lantern haters, does this make up for the whole my-only-weakness-is-yellow thing? People who don’t know who Green Lantern is: Hi!

if you’re going to do that to him, why not just hire Phillip Seymour Hoffman

      hysterical!

    • Fred

All sounds pretty cool to me as long as they don’t let the cgi overwhelm the story.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! I swear when I saw this pic I thought it was Phillip. Have we no shame?!LOL

I like the look, and I agree with the placement on the scale; I’m hoping Martin Campbell goes a more realistic Nolan-esque route with this, and this picture lends itself to that..

Mark Strong’s Sinestro.. when there’s a picture of him in full costume, THAT’LL be the test.

Oh this is going to be a disaster.

Am I the only one who immediately thought of the movie Mask when I saw this picture?

    • bill

rocky dennis likes the feel of sunlight on his face…

    • Mcfly

I immediately thought of Mask. I don’t think the movie can go the Nolanesque path as GL is science fiction and not easy to make realistic. There are a lot of bizarre alien characters in the GL universe.

Looks more like the Elephant Man to me.

    • Bobby

      I…am not…an animal.

      • Christie

Yep, I immediately thought of The Elephant Man as well.

I lost hope for this movie when they announced they were making it.

Hugo Weaving ‘s still got him beat.

Not a big fan of DC comics at all. It’s kind of like No.1 Batman and then it’s rapidly downhill fast after that.

DC’s attempt to copy Marvel’s Movieverse project by having individual character movies first, (like Marvel’s 1. Iron Man – 2. Incredible Hulk -3. Iron Man II – 4. Thor – 5. Captain America 6. The Avengers) lost a lot when they dumped the John Stewart Lantern, to be played by Common, to go to the original Lantern, played by Ryan Reynolds. Although Reynolds is actually the reason I may go to see this in the cinema I think it’s a shame that DC have lost their nerve in putting one of the tiny amount of “big” ethnically diverse characters on film.

I’m also pretty sure they haven’t solved the Batman problem. Nolan’s Year One Batman doesn’t sit easily with Aliens and things like “the Speed Force”. There’s no effort to “X-Men” the rest of the league and give them Semi-Plausible terrestrial origins and the idea of there being 2 movie Batman at the same time doesn’t sit right at all. It would be like getting Wolverine Origins movies every 2 years with Hugh Jackman and then having, say Taylor Lautner as Wolverine in the X-Men First class movies.

Still in Blackest Night and all that.

ewww. it reminds me of that disgusting movie i was forced to watch in high school called Elephant Man!!!! yuck

I think Ryan Reynolds’ charm is going to lend itself perfectly to the superhero genre. He was the best thing in Wolverine. Having top notch talent associated with the movie like Pete Sarsgaard and Martin Campbell (Casino Royle) leads me to believe that it’s going to be gritty but with some humor and wit.

He looks like The Elephant Man not Rocky Dennis. I hope that the Green Lantern movie does well and Mark Strong does justice to Sinestro.

  • Robert Wasserman

realeverton, what are you talking about? #1, John Stewart was a sub in Justice League just like he was a sub for Jordan, and it would be moronic to skip Jordan’s character for the sake of ethnic heterogeneity. Are you thinking that the JL CARTOON is the real story? And stop making everything into a DC-Marvel competition. Iron Man is fun and all the X-Men stunk. Batman is cool and the Supermans mostly stunk. Neither studio is copying, they’re just both riding a wave of public appreciation for the genre. Why can’t we all just enjoy them all?

  • Robert Wasserman

i DO i agree that Nolan is unlikely to make references to extradimensionality in his own movies, but he does bend a few “laws” of physics by cloaking them in science fiction… (mostly in Begins: the microwave emitter, the fear-gas, the bat call, and so on) and certainly Inception is a clear sign that he’s ok with sf. As long as GL doesn’t turn out goofy (I’m expecting it to be a lot like Iron Man, but HOPING it’s a little heavier) i think they can make a JL that both Reynolds and Bale could live in. I’m more worried about Superman, who is, of course, tied with Spider-Man for the silliest character ever created by either house. ;)

Does anyone ever actually take notice of these things?
