PopWatch Summer Movie Body Count: Tallying the carnage at the multiplex, starting with 'Iron Man 2'

iron-man-2-violenceImage Credit: Industrial Light & Magic/MarvelAhh summer. It’s about chillaxin’ at the beach — yeah I said “chillaxin’”…it’s Friday…I have a right — building bonfires in the backyard, and playing the ponies. Summer movies, however, are (to use the eloquent words of LL Cool J) “destruction! terror! and mayhem!” or at least explosions, shoot-outs, and garroting. And that’s why we here at PopWatch are instituting the official, scientific, and absolutely macabre Summer Movie Body Count.

Each week, Team PopWatch will pick one big-budget action flick, buy ourselves a ticket, and keep a running tally of how many folks buy the farm from the time the previews end till the time the closing credits finish rolling. We’ll count any confirmed deaths: folks who die on screen; folks whose deaths are verbally or visually confirmed (i.e. “Jane is dead!” or Jane’s hand arrives via U.S. Postal Service); or folks whose deaths can be estimated (i.e. a spacecraft explodes, and we’ll estimate how many folks were on board using our best pop-culture “measuring tools“). On Mondays, we’ll post our results — and keep a full tabulation of how many characters pay the ultimate price for your summer viewing enjoyment.

First up…Iron Man 2! Vote in our poll below, then come back Monday to digest (and possibly debate) our results!

I just saw Iron Man 2 – its a decent movie, not as good as the first but its a solid superhero film, but nothing extra is gained by seeing it in IMAX. Just stick around after the credits for the easter egg, most of the people in the theater must not have known about it = but you may not understand it unless you are familiar with the marvel universe

By the way the highlight was the trailer for Inception by Chirstopher Nolan that was shown – It blew my mind – that movie looks incredible visually and more importantly the story sounds incredibly interesting .

Agreed Inception along with Super 8 was what really made me interested.

That’s interesting. It was funnier, wittier, better action, and more action. There were more characters who were able to match wits, or a least try to with Tony.

There were some great pair offs too. Sam Rockwell was outstanding and Scarlett’s Black widow was excellent.

All of the Avenger’s Easter eggs were pretty good and there’ll be someone around to explain the post credits scene.

Did you guess what it was going to be or when agent Colson got sent to “… …..” did you get suckered into think it was going to be someone else? We were thinking ….., but it was cool to see it was……. It’s funny because the Usher dude and me were the only ones in our part of the cinema who knew and were having to tell people. Tony’s last prop up item was cool too.

I doubt any of them will measure up to last year’s “Star Trek”. They killed, what was it, 8 billion people in that one? Somewhere in the billions, anyway.

    • therealeverton

I think double digit billions as they killed all of the Romulans on their home planet and then all of the Vulcans too. Compared to that the thousands of Klingons and Federation people killed were kind of a drop in the Ocean.

didn’t 2012 blow up the whole planet. We nearly the whole planet. That must count for a lot. World population and all. I guess that wasn’t a summer movie so it doesn’t count.

  • Celia

I’ve already seen Iron Man 2. The death count wasn’t high at all.

  • therealeverton

Not that many people died at all. Oh and it’s better than the first movie in pretty much every way. Even funnier, better action, more drama and of Course we didn’t have to wait untill the end credits to see Nick Fury.

You do need to stay untill the credits finish rolling again though.

Agreed on the body count not very high at all. I saw Iron Man 1 & 2 Thursday night and I thought that 2 was a nice continuation of the saga. It doesn’t break new ground and I don’t think that was the point. It was worthy sequel to the original. Very funny, great action sequences and the chemistry between Pepper and Tony was adorable.

  • Lady Pirate

It’s probably higher than we think what with the climax scene and all. And don’t forget Whiplash’s entrance.
