Image Credit: Wild1/PR PhotosAfter The Twilight Saga: Eclipse is released in late June, Kristen Stewart will be heading out on the road — literally. The actress has signed on for Walter Salles’ movie adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s landmark novel On the Road, which is scheduled to begin shooting this August, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Stewart will play Mary Lou, the on-and-off wife of Dean Moriarty (who was famously based on Beat Generation icon Neal Cassady). Garrett Hedlund (Friday Night Lights, TRON Legacy) will play Moriarty, while Sam Riley (Control) will take on the role of Kerouac’s autobiographical surrogate, Sal Paradise. Salles will be reuniting with his The Motorcycle Diaries (and Oscar-nominated) screenwriter Jose Rivera.
PopWatchers, what do you make this casting news? Will Kristen Stewart will be at home in Kerouac’s 1950s Beat Generation? Will this be a natural evolution from her character, Tracy, in Sean Penn’s similarly themed Into the Wild? And will Twihards, who haven’t really supported Stewart’s non-Twilight ventures, embrace this role? The high-school Twihards should have at least read On the Road by now, right?

They’re making a movie of On the Road? Really?
^ This. Done in one.
Stewart will revitalize Mary Lou for a new generation. She’s mad steezy, gritty, smart and sexy and totally perfect for this.
that is literally the worst book i have ever read in my life. worse than red badge of courage and many other “classics” its books like this that make kids hate english class. the movie will certainly be just as tasteless, boring, and useless. just a horrible, horrible idea
I’ll be more likely to watch that at the movies than any TWILIGHT installment. That said, I am not the target audience for TWILIGHT, and I don’t see that audience following me ON THE ROAD.
In the end, kudos to Ms. Stewart and co-star Anna Kendrick for realizing that TWILIGHT is the means to a much more interesting end.
She’s sticking to tradition and playing a character that she’s already done before. Nothing new.
you obviously haven’t read the book and no nothing about the characters then.
how is this character like her others? I’m really curious how they’re similar to her others … explain please.
FAIL. FAIL. FAIL.
Awww. You’re so sweet. It will be the same, because she has no range. The girl is a one trick pony.
I love On The Road, and honestly, I don’t see this working. I really don’t.
Oh, and nick, can you elaborate exactly WHY you hate the book besides calling it “tasteless, boring, and useless”?
And Kerouac is a million times better than anything I’ve read in high school English.
why dont you see it working? She proven herself as an actress (the runaways, welcome to the rileys, inot the wild) and they’ve wanted to make this movie forever. what’s not working for you?
Cake eaters!!!! A vey good preformance for such a young actress,
your probably the same person who thinks kristen stewart did a amazing preformance in catch that kid? kristen’s gonna ruin this book to film movie, just like twilight.
I hated reading the actual book “On the Road” when I first read it in college because I felt it was kind of misogynistic. I always loved the idea of just picking up and going somewhere without really knowing your destination, which I kind of did for a long time after college. I always had a copy of “On the Road” with me, not because I really loved it, but because it had the address and number of my best friend that I would always write to.
As a male fan of this book, I’m stoked for this. I think Stewart will do a remarkable job. Can’t wait for this one. Definitely a more grown up role, and more towards my target audience.
I will read the book to see what it is about. Love Kristen in everything. Rebel without the reason.
I can’t wait to see Garrett and Sam in this – they’re both amazing actors and hopefully they will eventually get stories written about them rather than just focusing on someone cast in a supporting role.
Catch That Kid? Wasn’t she like 13 when she made that movie? You’re really going to make a biased comment on a movie she did as a child? How about Panic Room then? She was damn good in that and was even younger. How about watching her latest movies like Cake Eaters or The Runaways where she received rave reviews from top critics? I guess they wouldn’t know what they’re talking about since they’ve only watched Catch That Kid.
Stewart looks like she has Down’s syndrome, which would explain her strikingly-bad acting talents.
can wait, love u kristen don’t list to those monkey people,,they don’t know wat they talking about…..
WOW. these people are all WAYYYY too young to be playing these characters. Dean in particular wasn’t some fresh-faced kid. he was a beaten down man with a full life behind him. yikes.
Sadly, it’s the age of the audience that matters most in movies.
