Image Credit: Albert L. Ortega/PR PhotosIt’s safe to say that Steve Carell paved the way for NBC comedy stars hoping to jump into movies with The 40 Year Old Virgin. Then, at some point, we found ourselves buying movie tickets to see Tina Fey, John Krasinski, and Ed Helms, too. And now, the Hollywood Reporter reports that Joel McHale has landed his first post-Community movie role in a comedy with Anna Faris. This movie, currently titled What’s Your Number?, sounds right up McHale’s alley: He will play Faris’ “mildly charming” boss, who inadvertently sets off her quest through her sexual past for the perfect man.
Between this and his recent deal to join The Big Year alongside Owen Wilson and Steve Martin, it seems Mr. Soup is ready to take a crack at movie stardom. I haven’t seen him in The Informant!, but I like his work on Community, and it’s not hard to imagine McHale one day starring in a summer blockbuster or losing a tooth in a Golden Globe-winning comedy. What do you think, PopWatchers? Is this the beginning of a steady movie career? What other Thursday nighter would you like to see given a shot on the big screen?

LOVE Joel McHale. He’s both acerbic and endearing, a strangely awesome combination. Community is such a well-written, well-acted show, and I need more McHale, so this movie sounds perfect.
hes amazzzzing he will do great:)
Joel McHale <3. I hope his movie career goes more the way of Steve Carell than John Krasinksi.
He’s hot too.
I know! He’s hot and funny. Just how I like ‘em.
I wish Joel well and know he can be a movie star, but I would hope he never leaves the Soup though.
I just don’t want him to leave “The Soup”!! Ever!
Joel could easily move into movies. And after him, Aziz Ansari will definitely be the next from NBC to tackle films.
Love and adore this man.
I really enjoy Joel on The Soup but I have not watched one episode of Community. Its like I can only accept him on the Soup. Weird. But I will catch up with Community on DVD.
Joel McHale was AMAZING in Almost Live…all down hill from there.
I really hope that McHale does get a movie career going. He is a very funny man that deserves his turn in the big spotlight. Another Thursday guy I’d love to see get a huge career is Aziz Ansari (Who is starting to have one, thanks to that 3 pic deal) and Chris Pratt. Pratt should really start stretching his comedy muscle more.
Good for McHale.
I agree that Aziz Ansari is almost certainly the next Thursday night comedy vet to break out on the big-screen.
Beyond that, I’d love to see Mindy Kaling do some movies or “Community”s Donald Glover. (That guy is HILARIOUS!)
I’ve loved Joel McHale since the first time I saw him at Theater Sports in Seattle…that was 1992 or so. Theater Sports is an improve comedy show where two teams battle it out each night, like “Whose Line Is It Anyway?”, and Joel was amazing every time! Can’t wait to see him starring in movies.
They should re-boot the Fletch franchise with him.
Not to nitpick, Sandra, but you ARE aware that there were NBC stars who went to screen before Steve Carell, right?
