N.W.A. biopic takes shape: Your dream cast?

NWAImage Credit: London Features/LFIOver a year after we heard it was in development, New Line’s N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton has a writer. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Andrea Berloff (World Trade Center) will script the rise and fall of the gangsta rap crew. Producers include original N.W.A. member Ice Cube and the widow of the late Eazy-E.

No casting for this film has been announced yet. So who should play core members Cube, Eazy, and Dr. Dre, plus lesser-knowns like MC Ren, DJ Yella, and Arabian Prince? I can see The Hurt Locker‘s Anthony Mackie as Eazy-E — they don’t look much alike, but Mackie has the right intensity. (He doesn’t particularly resemble Tupac Shakur, either, and he did well in Notorious.) Ice Cube, of course, has quite the screen resume these days, so if all else fails maybe he can just slip on a Jheri curl wig and a few pounds of makeup and play himself at 20. Meanwhile, it would be nice to get some of today’s actual up-and-coming gangsta rappers on board for this movie. Maybe there’s a part in Straight Outta Compton for Nipsey Hussle, Jay Rock, or Freddie Gibbs?

I’m sure you can come up with even better casting ideas. Let’s have ‘em. And let us know if this is a movie you’re looking forward to.

Anthony Mackie has at least 6 inches on Eazy E. He’d have to walk on his knees for the role… or they’d film him using Peter Jackson’s Hobbitizing technology.

    • topher

Ok, I got it… Jeffrey Wright as Eazy E. And Idris Elba as Ice Cube.

  • spock

kirsten dunst as eazy, bill shattner as cube and the guy from nickelback as dre

how about the fluffy girl from precious as one of the guys? or in some other part….

  • Diggity

Why can’t Cube and Dre play themselves?

  • Predator

This movie sounds boring. I think I’d prefer to re-watch Boyz in tha Hood, Menace to Society, Friday, CB4 to get that old timey 90s feeling.

    • Shanna

I agree. Why do they need this when CB4 already covered it, lol!

  • Celia

    Tristan Wilds as Ice Cube
    Drake as DJ Yella
    Derek Luke as MC Ren
Malcolm David Kelley as Eazy E
    Nate Parker as Dr. Dre

    • Niall

Yeah I never realized how much Derek Luke and MC ren look alike.

    • AC

Very good attempt Celia. I would agree all look promising for a screen test except maybe Derek Luke. Not sure he looks enough like Ren.

  • Emmstah

Oh God, NO DEREK LUKE. He’s one of the worst actors working right now. He’s like the black Josh Hartnett.

  • Zachary Mosley

What about that new Kid from Freedom Writers with Hilary Swank “Jason Finn” he’s not known but he’s an hell of a new actor. I’d like to see some new faces I’m cool on saying Nick Cannon, Bow Wow, and Soulja Boy.

  • Niall

Wow EW, great shout out to Freddie Gibbs! I could see him as Ice Cube and maybe the Game as Dr. Dre.

  • TinG

Marc John Jefferies should be Eazy-E. Malcolm McDowell as Jerry Heller. Terrence Howard as Ice Cube or Dj Yella.
    Anthony Mackie as Mc Ren.

  • AC

Idris Elba (Stringer from the Wire) as D.O.C
JD Williams (Bodie from the Wire) as Ice Cube
    Drake as Yella
    Lil’ Eazy as Eazy

  • DJ Swindle

“plus lesser-knowns like MC Ren, DJ Yella, and Arabian Prince?” Hold up on that- They legands aswell!
They need to use Lil Eaze, Cubes son etc for these parts.
PLEASE dont use Game as Dre, Or Drake as Yella WTF?!

  • Homer
