'Justified' gets a second season. Now can we get more Natalie Zea?

JUSTIFIED-renewedImage Credit: Prashant Gupta/ FXFX has made just about every critic’s day by announcing that Timothy Olyphant and Justified will return for another 13-episode season. This Tuesday, FX airs the eighth episode of Season 1 (10 p.m. ET, with a DVR-friendly 11 p.m. repeat). It’s a good time to jump in, folks. Here’s what you need to know:

• Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Olyphant) is sleeping with Ava (Joelle Carter), the sole witness to him shooting his old coal-mining buddy Boyd (The Shield‘s Walton Goggins), who unfortunately grew up to be a white supremacist and a bank robber. Boyd survived and is experiencing a religious reawakening in prison. He says he wants to save Raylan’s soul, but odds are he also wants to screw with it.

• Ava had shot and killed her abusive husband, Boyd’s brother — and the boys’ father, Bo, is now getting out of prison and wants Ava dead. She’s been warned to leave Kentucky, but she won’t go. Which means Raylan — whose willingness to draw his sidearm is what got him reassigned to his hometown to begin with (and made him the subject of an ongoing internal investigation) — will have to protect her. Watch the promo for this week’s episode.

• Raylan hates his criminal father, Arlo (Raymond J. Barry). In my dream world, Raylan needs Arlo’s help to take down Bo. Nothing would piss Raylan off more.

• Raylan has an ex-wife, Winona (Dirty Sexy Money‘s Natalie Zea), who everyone — including Olyphant, who told executive producer Graham Yost early in production, “That girl is so good that if you don’t write for her, you’re a moron” – wants to see more of. Winona left Raylan for their realtor and married him. Now Winona suspects her husband is in some kind of trouble, and in episode six, had Raylan run some names for her that came back clean. To see their chemistry — and how she brings out the best reaction shots in Olyphant  – watch the clip below.

I just want this show to live up to its pilot potential! The mood has been light in all the wrong places. There are places for humor in the story, but most of the episodes have dealt with bumbling idiots and hokey premises. It should get a LOT darker and follow a season long plot. Needs some creative retooling or else its in danger of turning into a CBS or USA show.

Furrealz? That’s mraveloulsy good to know.

I also want to mention that I watched Dirty Sexy Money and I still don’t recognize Natalie Zea in this role.

This show is obviously awesome to anyone who has seen it, it has a laid back, 1970′s vibe to it (and I mean that in the best possible way) that is unlike anything else on TV (Raylan would laugh at today’s oh-so-2010 notions of post shooting PTSD and mental trauma). If this was 1974, Burt Reynolds would be born to play Raylan. Also, my wife informs me that Olyphant as Raylan is the sexiest man on TV by a mile, so it has that going for it, I guess.

      Rockford Files comes to mind.

I absolutely LOVE this scene, and I remember thinking, “Man, that actress needs to be in the show more often.” She’s great, and I agree, she makes Olyphant even bettr’n he already is.

I’d do her. She would have nothing to do with me of course but if she would, I’d do her.

  • Lorie

Absolutely! More Winona & Raylan scenes – they’ve got great chemistry.

  • Bethann

Nope. More *Rachel* tops my wishlist. I find her (and Ava, for that matter) more interesting than Winona. Obviously, mileage varies.

      this

      Agreed!

Thank you! I for one do not really like Winona’s character. Granted, she hasn’t had much screen time but she did cheat on her husband (however ‘justified’ it may be, pun intended) and was marking her territory with Ava in last week’s episode. I really like Rachel and would like to see Ava’s more vulnerable side (though she is as kick-ass as they come).

More WALTON GOGGINS is at the top of my list. As a HUGE fan of The Shield I feel kind of cheated by the way the FX promoted the show with Goggins in every commercial making it look like he was an equal co-star/main villain and then after the first episode he’s hardly on except for a few minutes here and there. Hopefully that will change now that his character got out of jail, let’s hope so.

Agreed. Boyd is one of the most interesting characters on the show. now all they need is a Vic Mackey guest appearance..

I love the show just the way that it is, except I also vote for more Winona and Raylan scenes. They bring out the best in each other and it is clear to see their history because both actors are great. I wait every week for more to be revealed about the characters. And the little touches, like the Hitler art, are fascinating. I can’t remember when I have anticipated a TV show this much and I will miss it after June 8th. So glad it is returning.

By the way, I don’t believe that what Raylan ran actually came back clean. He told her that to protect her. Remember, he stopped and warned her husband not to drag her down in the things that he is into. More to come on that, I am sure.

    • ef

Yup. I was going to post the same thing. It appeared that Raylan knows something’s going on, but spared Winona the details while he’s going to keep an eye on him/them.

  • Catherine Scott

I love Justified, so I’m really excited about this! I found one problem with your recap though. I thought Raylan ran the names, and they didn’t come back clean, but he told Winona they did. Raylan went to see Winona’s husband and told him not to get her mixed up in what he had going on, and then lied to Winona to keep her ignorant of the truth. Maybe I read it wrong, but that’s what I got out of that scene where he went to see Winona’s husband at his office. Maybe I’m wrong though!

    • Kristal

I assumed Raylan had a suspicion that the names involved Gary and bad decisions he was making, I never got the feeling that he had found out anything about the names.

      • llevinso

I agree with you. The names did come back clean but he suspected the reason he had to run names in the first place was that Winona’s husband was getting her mixed up in something not good. So he warned him not to get her involved in anything shady or he’d basically kill him.

    • Linda

You are 100% correct, he let Gary know that he knows but did protect Winona…still loves her

  • Califaktress

Everytime I watch this show, I can’t help but pick up the dialect. It’s Crazy! I want to be on this show!!

    • rebecca

i love all of there Kentuckian accents!!! I always want to talk like that after i watch an episode!!

  • rebecca

I love how she acts and looks nothing like her role in Dirty Sexy Money. I know she is an actress and all, but she doesn’t even look like the same person!!

  • rebecca

the only thing i don’t like is her hair in that one clip you posted. it looks like she got caught in one of those crazy Kentucky tornadoes!

    • llevinso

That whole episode her hair looked horrible. It made it hard for me to pay attention to what she was saying and take her seriously. She’s a beautiful woman but that hair was a mess!

  • Lorie

I know! I spent most of her first episode thinking “Where have I seen this woman?”

  • sickaworkin

    NO

  • Kristal

I am excited that Justified got picked-up for another season. I love the scene in episode 2 outside of the elevators with Raylan and Winona, it was so cute, fun and showed how much chemistry the two of them still have.
