'American Idol' Q&A: Mike, Siobhan, and Lee get tattoos on their 'magical day'

Michael-LyncheImage Credit: Frank Micelotta/FoxThe decision to forgo a group-number tonight left a profound mark on a few of the American Idol contestants yesterday. Literally. While Casey spent some downtime last week chatting on the phone with family and Crystal enjoyed “baby and boyfriend time,” a few of the other contestants took advantage of their “magical day” and ventured to a Hollywood tattoo parlor. “A little bonding thing,” says Mike, who unveiled a couple of five-point stars on his left arm.

Where did you find time to do this?
Siobhan: We had a magical day.
Lee: It was an awesome day.
Mike: It was the most time on our own that we’ve ever had.
Lee: And what was great was we all said we were going to do it in the morning–
Mike: Well, we said we were going to do this weeks ago.
Lee: But we actually committed. “We’re going tonight,” and we went.

'Parenthood': Lauren Graham talks like Lorelai, Peter Krause dances. Life is good.

parenthoodNBC’s Parenthood aired perhaps my favorite four lighthearted moments of the series to date last night: First, Lauren Graham’s Sarah teased Monica Potter’s Kristina about her business attire (“from the David Byrne collection…. Cybill’s Shepherd’s lost jacket… it’s like an episode of Hoarders, when’s the last time you cleaned that closet?”) and asked “What’s the lace-to-base?” ratio of a Victoria’s Secret bra Haddie had bought while reading an Entertainment Weekly. So Lorelai Gilmore. Then Drew came over to ask his Uncle Adam (Peter Krause) how to dance. Has that ever happened off-screen — a teen asking an adult how to dance? But who cares! Adam, excuse me “Fever” as he was called in high school, cleared the living room immediately to show Drew some moves to Run-DMC’s “It’s Tricky.” (Was it wrong that I was hoping for “Boogie Shoes”?)

“You gotta shut this off, and turn this on,” he said. (Kristina’s turned on reaction when Adam did the worm was as priceless as Sarah telling Drew, “Did he tell you about the Fever? He did. Once you unleash the Fever, it doesn’t stop.”) Watch the scenes after the jump. READ FULL STORY »

'The City' premiere recap: Baby's first fashion show

City-WhitneyImage Credit: Jim Wright/MTVWhen we last left The City, power girls were on the brink of explosion and destruction. Whitney was a fashion designer on the rise with a chance to show at Bryant Park, while Olivia and Erin were working on a huge Elle spot on The Today Show. Of course, Roxy threatened to ruin everything for Whitney, and the not-so-subtle mutual hatred between Olivia and Erin put the integrity of Elle in jeopardy. Yes, it may be catty, but at least it’s not silly boyfriend drama! The City has slowly and quietly moved away from just a tale of a gorgeous glamazon who moves to New York, lives in an unrealistic apartment, and dates a hot Aussie rocker; it’s become the story of an ambitious young woman attempting to make a career for herself. Though most of the players may be incredibly connected, they’re still trying to hustle just like the rest of us, which is a refreshing change from reality “stars” who simply do nothing. 'The Hills' premiere recap: So this is what a hangover feels like

Hills-Heidi-AudrinaImage Credit: Matthias Clamer/MTVThe Hills is kind of like your least favorite alcoholic drink, the kind that makes you cringe when you think of downing it, and makes you feel even worse after you actually do. And today, I have a raging TV hangover. For something that used to be fun, the show has become tortured, tired, and old (just the opposite of Heidi’s face!). As I listened to Natasha Bedingfield’s sunny lyrics and watched the smiling fresh faces in the opening credits, a wave of nostalgia rushed over me. I longed for Kristin’s ugly black choker from her Laguna days, Ste-VEN Colletti, Jason, Jen Bunney, Les Deux, Teen Vogue, Bolthouse, Whitney!… simply anything or anyone that would give these people a smidgen of purpose in life, and stop them from droning on about friends, parties, and hooking up. But alas, you can’t live in the past, and like a hangover, we must suffer from what we put ourselves through… READ FULL STORY »

'American Idol': Shania Twain sways, hugs, chats, and claps on the scene of Top 6 performance night

Idol-Shania-TwainImage Credit: Ray Mickshaw/FoxAs I walked through the CBS Television City parking lot to the Idoldome last night, I passed two massive black steel abstract trees, and a pair of park benches with backs that looked like giant bloody razor blades. “Ah, country week on American Idol,” chirped my snark demon, Smirkelstilskin. “It always takes me back to that glorious winter of 1986, when I headlined a West Berlin production of Waiting for Godot.” (I’ll get back to the trees and benches, promise.) After I got to my seat, Smirkel then caught sight of season 6 runner-up Blake Lewis hobnobbing with one of the sway pits, sporting a frosted emo haircut that made it clear he’d gone to his barber with a worn-out copy of Us Weekly, pointed to a picture of Kate Gosselin, and said “I wanna look like this — but just the front part.”

With that, Smirkel was sated indeed, and curled back into his roly-poly shell. Which is just as well, really, since the rest of the evening proved decidedly uneventful. It all skipped by with barely a hitch, but there’s still plenty of behind-the-scenery to chew on regardless. So if you’ll skip with me over the jump, I’ll give you the full breakdown of what got Shania Twain swaying in her seat, whether Casey James really cares if he wins, and how Kara managed to stumble into yet another compromising double-entendre after the show. 'American Idol': The Top 6 tackle Shania Twain tunes. How'd they do?

American-Idol-Top-6Image Credit: Michael Becker/Fox;Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty Image When it comes to American Idol, Shania Twain can seemingly do no wrong! Season 9′s most delightful guest judge returned to Fox’s ratings mammoth tonight in the form of mentor/songbook subject, and for the first time since season 8′s delectable Rat Pack Week, not a single contestant stunk up the joint. Can I get a yee-haw and a what-what? Okay, sorry…I won’t attempt to get in touch with my barely existent country roots again. But the good news is, the competition that’s sounded depressingly like “Crystal, Lee, & a Bunch of Half-Interested Also-Rans” may be turning into something of a horse race. Not to mention, if Ken Warwick & Co. get smart and try to reboot the Idol judges’ panel for season 10, they’ve already got a guaranteed winner in Ms. Twain. (Who else sees the value in hiring one Shania for the price of an Ellen and three Randys?)

And now for the bad news: As Ellen pointed out, Wednesday’s results show telecast is going to be a tough one, because it’s not like 97 percent of viewers are going to hear the name of the person whose journey came to an end, shrug their shoulders, and say, “Eh. I’d had it with that Andrew Garcia dood anyway.” If I had to guess, I think this week’s bottom three will consist of High School Student Aaron Kelly, Michael “Big Mike” Lynche, and either Casey James or maybe a MamaSox shocker (because too much backtalk makes speed-dialers’ fingers freeze).

But I leave that for y’all to discuss in the comments, because I’ve got a gargantuan-length TV Watch recap to write — update: It’s now liiiive, so check it out! – which will post tomorrow a.m. on EW.com. Until then, check me out on iTunes check out the latest episode of Idolatry (after the jump), share your prediction of who’s getting the (cowboy) boot on Wednesday, and do sign up to follow me on Twitter @EWMichaelSlezak! 'American Idol' announces season 9 tour dates. Will you see them in concert?

Idol-top-10-season9Image Credit: Michael Becker/FoxAre you already missing Tim Urban, whose charming Idolatry interview has finally convinced me he is not actually a cardboard cut-out? Well, get ready to get out your wallet: American Idol has announced the dates for their “American Idols LIVE! Tour 2010.” (See the dates embedded after the jump.)

As someone who attends the tour nearly every year with my mom (yes, we are some of the oldest screaming fans, and yes, we are awesome), I feel a bit obligated to see the likes of Andrew Garcia & Co., onstage. But then again, I’m not sure how this tour could possibly top the awesomeness of seeing Kradison live in concert last year. I wonder if there’s anyway to pay for just 20 percent of the concert, so I can show up just to watch Crystal and Lee perform… Tell me, PopWatchers: Will you attend “Idols LIVE!” this year? You have a little more than two weeks to decide — most tickets go on-sale May 15. READ FULL STORY »
