Exclusive: New 'Scream 4' poster, plus an interview with director Wes Craven

Filed under: Movies and tagged: , , ,

It’s been 10 years since his last appearance in Scream 3, but Ghostface is back for more, as is the original Scream team of director Wes Craven, screenwriter Kevin Williamson (The Vampire Diaries), and the acting trio of Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette. Dimension Films gave EW.com the first look at the final teaser poster for Scream 4, which will hit theaters April 15, 2011. Horror movie maestro Craven, who’ll start shooting the new sequel this June, kindly set aside a few minutes to chat about the fourth entry in his memorably meta series.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: So how did Scream 4 come together?
WES CRAVEN: Bob Weinstein [the head of Dimension Films] felt that 10 years was enough of a wait. He felt it was time to give the original three films their due, so he called Kevin Williamson, who started coming up with ideas. For some years, Kevin had the notion of the general course of the next three movies. There was a point where Bob came to me and said, “We want to start showing you pages — do you want to do it?” And off we went.

Did you have any trepidation about revisiting the series so many years down the road?
No, I’m fascinated by what this movie is. I can’t think of another film that has not only a true trilogy, where you’re following a single central character over three pictures, but has the complexity to the story and other characters that also have continued along. And then 10 years later, to come back to those same characters and same actors, and continue that story in a way that’s totally organic. It’s kind of unprecedented. READ FULL STORY »

'The Hobbit' on track (hopefully) for 2012 release

Filed under: Movies, News and tagged: , ,

deltoroImage Credit: Nick Wall/WireImage.comTolkien aficionados, movie lovers, fans of small, furry-footed humanoids, and nerds of every persuasion have been salivating for years over any tiny morsel of gossip and speculation regarding the big-budget adaptation of The Hobbit. Now, courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter, comes the encouraging news that the first installment of The Hobbit, which Guillermo del Toro is on board to direct, has indeed been scheduled by Warner Bros. for release in December 2012, with the concluding installment to come in December 2013. (Some Hobbit-watchers may have been thrown into a panic earlier when IMAX mistakenly suggested the first movie would come out in 2013.) Now, granted, there is no firm start date for production yet — the screenwriting team, including del Toro and The Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson — is still toiling away on the script. But any Hobbit news is good Hobbit news, right?

What do you think, PopWatchers? You’ve waited this long — can you hold out until 2012?

How much Dr. Drew is too much?

Filed under: News, Reality TV, Television and tagged: ,

Dr-Drew-PinskyImage Credit: Paul Archuleta/FilmMagic.comFor fans of train-wreck reality television, Dr. Drew Pinsky is already pretty darn near inescapable, between VH1′s Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew, Sex Rehab with Dr. Drew, Celebrity Rehab Presents Sober House, and his MTV series Sex … With Mom and Dad. Now comes the news that Pinsky has formed his own production company, Dr. Drew Productions, to develop more unscripted series featuring the celebrity doctor. First up: a pilot for a new series, Estranged With Dr. Drew, which will focus on couples struggling to decide whether to stay together.

All of which begs the question: How much Dr. Drew do viewers want or need? More to the point, how much televised misery and dysfunction is too much? Dr. Drew is clearly in the business of trying to help people with often very deep personal problems, but, by turning those problems into other people’s entertainment and encouraging a culture of voyeurism and oversharing, is he ultimately doing more harm than good?

What do you think, PopWatchers? Are you addicted to addiction shows like Celebrity Rehab and Sex Rehab? Or are you turned off by the sense of exploitation? How much Dr. Drew is too much for you?

'The Naked Office': The best reality show ever, or just the guiltiest?

Filed under: News, Reality TV, Television and tagged: ,

The “actuality” network truTV — home to such diverse programming as Black Gold, about life on Texas oil rigs, and the self-explanatory Rehab: Party at the Hark Rock Hotel — has announced that among the series its currently developing is The Naked Office. According to the press release: “In troubled times, many businesses resort to radical methods to keep employees productive. The Naked Office uses an unorthodox form of very revealing group therapy to rebuild broken spirits.”

You can understand why we’d need to find more about this show, which comes to truTV from Reveille (The Biggest Loser, The Office) and is inspired by a similar series that aired in the UK. The network tells EW, the radical therapy ”utilizes the belief that the best way for any team to shed destructive interpersonal issues is to slowly shed their clothes and build enough trust to work completely naked for one full day.” I don’t know how you institute that plan and not get sued, nor do I see sane people complying, but if the employees were to be at all normal, it could be fascinating.

The network’s development slate also includes Exposed! (working title), a show from Ashton Kutcher and Jason Goldberg‘s production company Katalyst, which sounds equally revealing — at first. “In the spirit of Punk’d,” says the release, “Katalyst takes their brand of edgy, disruptive comedy programming to another level with this top-secret comedy that takes it all off in front of unsuspecting people, in the name of a unique social experiment.”

We thought that meant flashing; we were wrong. “This show exposes and unleashes outrageous characters in situations that are sure to provoke immediate reactions, confusion, chaos and comedy,” the network tells us. “There is no ‘flashing’ involved.” Pity.

Which show do you think holds more promise? Under any circumstance, could you see working in a Naked Office?

A Magic 8-Ball movie? Signs point to yes.

Filed under: Movies and tagged: , , ,

magic-8-ballToys and movies: Two great tastes that taste great together, right? Hollywood executives certainly seem to think so, as a recent episode of The Simpsons so nicely lampooned with this trailer for Tic Tac Toe: The Movie. Universal, which has a deal with Hasbro, already has films based on Battleship, Monopoly, Candy Land, Stretch Armstrong, Magic: The Gathering, and the Ouija board at various stages of development. Now comes news that Paramount — which hit the toy-to-movie jackpot with a little franchise called Transformershas optioned the Magic 8-Ball as the basis for a potential live-action adventure film. Sure, we all played with Magic 8-Balls as kids, shaking up that little black fortune-telling sphere for answers to our most profound questions, like whether the girl we had a crush on in fifth grade liked us back (“Reply hazy, try again”) or whether we’d be rich and famous when we grew up (“Don’t count on it”). But can you picture an entire movie based on that? Concentrate and ask again.

What do you think? Does the idea of a big-screen Magic 8-Ball movie leave you thinking “Outlook good”? Or “Very doubtful”? While we’re at it, what game do you think Hollywood should set its sights on next? Hungry Hungry Hippos? Boggle? Jenga?

Muppet cupcakes: To eat or not to eat

Filed under: Food and Drink and tagged: , ,

Muppet-cupcakesImage Credit: http://www.cupcakeoccasions.co.uk/These Muppet cupcakes look delectable, but you would have to be even lower than Doc Hopper to actually take a bite out of one. These morsels of art, courtesy of Britain’s Cupcake Occasions, are meant to be showcased, as far as I’m concerned, especially the one of Animal. But just for the sake of argument, let’s tease our tummies by debating what flavor each cupcake would be? Rowlf, obviously, is chocolate. Fozzie is probably cheese-filled, and Miss Piggy looks like french creme with a hint of smoked bacon.

I’ve always had a soft sport for Gonzo, but I’d kill even more for a Swedish Chef cupcake? Which character would you most like to have, and could you bring yourself to eating Kermit?

Leonardo Da Vinci action hero flick? Paging Dan Brown...

Filed under: Movies, News and tagged: , , ,

mona-lisa-actionImage Credit: Everett CollectionFlashForward showrunner Marc Guggenheim has been tapped to pen Leonardo Da Vinci and the Soldiers of Forever, a film that, according to The Hollywood Reporter, “recasts the original Renaissance man as an action hero.” I know what you’re thinking: Leonardo Da Vinci, an action hero?! Well, I fail to see this as much of a stretch, considering the guy’s already had an action figure for years.

Plus, after the success of The Da Vinci Code – which raked in $217 million back in 2006 — it was only a matter of time before the artist himself got the big-screen treatment. And based on the rest of THR‘s description of the film, it seems Guggenheim might get quite a bit of inspiration from Da Vinci Code author Dan Brown: “Da Vinci…reimagines Da Vinci as a member of a secret society. He falls headlong into a supernatural adventure that pits him against biblical demons in a story involving secret codes, lost civilizations, hidden fortresses, and fallen angels. Think National Treasure and Raiders of the Lost Ark by way of Clash of the Titans.” (Or, so it seems, The Da Vinci Code and The Lost Symbol by way of Angels and Demons.)

I have faith in Guggenheim, though. Based on his FlashForward work (he also co-wrote the screenplay for 2011′s Green Lantern) Guggenheim knows how to sell action. Or he’ll splice Da Vinci with 84,692 cuts of Sonya Walger staring at Jack Davenport from atop a staircase.

Are you digging Da Vinci as an action hero, PopWatchers? And what historical figure should get the action hero treatment next? (I vote Rasputin.)

People's Most Beautiful: Who do you hope makes the cut?

Tagged:

People is offering an online sneak peek at this year’s Most Beautiful Issue (out Friday, with Sandra Bullock and her adopted son, three-and-a-half-month-old Louis). Among the highlights: Julia Roberts, who heads the list for the fourth time. You can browse through a gallery of chosen beauties, which reveals such things as Scarlett Johansson’s two must-have beauty staples (“Red lipstick and sandwiches” — kind of a great answer) and that Justin Bieber doesn’t want his hair to define him (“It’s part of my image; it’s not who I am”). The site special also reveals that we have our annual no-makeup photo spread to look forward to, with Selena Gomez and Kerry Washington among the featured women.

Who are you hoping to see in this year’s issue? After developing a girl crush on Modern Family‘s Sofia Vergara during her Leno appearance, I’m happy she’s been shown some love. And having seen Julianna Margulies in-person at a recent Good Wife panel, I can tell you TV doesn’t do her justice. Combine that strength, intelligence, and class with softer features and wavy hair — stunning.
