'Fringe' gets musical! Which show should tackle a musical episode next?

fringe-Brown-BettyImage Credit: Liane Hentscher/FoxWhat do you get when you combine a mad scientist, singing, dancing, and 1940s noir? Surprisingly, not a Broadway musical or a rejected episode of Glee, but tonight’s musical episode of Fringe. While dealing with some upsetting news, the self-medicating Walter (John Noble) tells Olivia’s (Anna Torv) niece a fairy tale, which plays out in his head with a lot of singing and dancing.

With tonight’s episode, Fringe is entering into some competitive territory. There have been some great TV musical episodes: A patient hallucinated that everyone was singing on Scrubs, which gave us the bromance anthem “Guy Love.” How I Met Your Mother recently celebrated its 100th episode with a big production number featuring Barney’s (Neil Patrick Harris) ode to suits. Harris also showed off his incredible pipes on a musical episode of Batman: The Brave and the Bold last year. (You must download the soundtrack!) But of course, my favorite is Buffy the Vampire Slayer‘s superb “Once More, With Feeling,” the granddaddy template for a great musical episode. READ FULL STORY »

Siobhan Magnus: The 'American Idol' castoff defends theme nights and her fashion choices

Siobhan-MagnusImage Credit: Frank Micelotta/FoxButterflies everywhere hoping to one day accessorize the arms of Siobhan Magnus on American Idol were weeping tears of disappointment last night when the fashion-eccentric singer was shown the exit last night, leaving five contestants to battle for Idol glory. (Full recap here.) But the 20-year-old isn’t crying. In fact, the finalist spoke with the same positivity that helped her deal with vocal and fashion critiques alike, even when talking about Simon Cowell’s critiques and those pesky theme nights. 'The Real Housewives of NYC': Meet new personality Jennifer Gilbert

Jennifer-Gilbert-HouseImage Credit: Mitchell Haaseth/BravoBravo’s The Real Housewives of NYC will see a new personality appear tonight in event planner Jennifer Gilbert, who crosses paths with the ladies when the group’s mother hen, Jill Zarin, commissions her to help her with an upcoming holiday party. Natch, Gilbert makes inroads with the whole group and, as you might guess, will pop up here and there throughout the rest of the season. However, unlike Sonja Morgan, who joined the cast two weeks ago, Gilbert doesn’t have full golden apple-holding privileges…yet. EW caught up with Gilbert to talk through why she’d want to dip into the waters of such a sharky cast, how she knows the ladies, and lots more. READ FULL STORY »

Lady Gaga, Neil Patrick Harris make the 'Time 100'

Neil-Patrick-Harris-Lady-GagaImage Credit: Andrew H. Walker/Getty Images; Koichi Kamoshida/Getty ImagesTime has released its annual list of the world’s most influential people — 100 artists, heroes, leaders, and thinkers who affect our world. You’ll find Iron Man director Jon Favreau explaining how Elon Musk was the inspiration for Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark in Thinkers, and Bono waxing poetic on Bill Clinton and Robert De Niro riffing on Ben Stiller (StillerStrong.org) in Heroes. But obviously, it’s the Artists category we flipped to first. Among those making the cut: Conan O’Brien, Glee‘s Lea Michele, Lost‘s Carlton Cruse and Damon Lindelof, James Cameron, Sandra Bullock, Simon Cowell, Robert Pattinson, Oprah Winfrey, Taylor Swift, District 9 director Neill Blomkamp, Elton John, Prince, Ricky Gervais, Ashton Kutcher, Penny Arcade’s Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik, fashion designer Marc Jacobs, chef David Chang, conductor Valery Gergiev, blogger Han Han, artist Banksy, and authors Suzanne Collins and Chetan Bhagat. Three of the write-ups that stood out for me: READ FULL STORY »

palin-blackburnImage Credit: PRN/PR Photos; John Parra/WireImage.comIn an effort to keep the dream of a reality show combo platter of Drop Dead Gorgeous and Dick alive, Grammy-nominated singer/actress Maryline Blackburn — who beat Sarah Palin to win Miss Alaska 1984 — is campaigning to replace a Republican incumbent in the U.S. House of Representatives. Blackburn has lived in Georgia for the past 24 years. Think she can see the Panama Canal from her house?  [People]

Lindsay Lohan gunning for controversy with new pics

lindsay-lohan-gun_320.jpg Image Credit: Tyler ShieldsAs anyone who has been nearby a computer knows, Lindsay Lohan has had a rough week. First, her father brought the LAPD to her house to check on her younger sister, Ali, who was staying at the residence at the time. Then, the actress was fired from her next film, The Other Side, after financiers were hesitant to fund the film with Lohan in the leading role. Then there was that whole HIV fiasco on her father’s Twitter. Paging Daniel Powter!

Well, Linds is grappling with controversy yet again today thanks to a picture posted on her Twitter account showing the actress holding a gun up to her mouth. The pic is from a photo shoot with photographer Tyler Shields, which also included the slightly different photo pictured here. (Several more can be found posted on his website.) [Lohan's lawyer has yet to respond to EW's request for comment.] Of course, as we discovered back in 2007 with those cutlery photos, Lohan enjoys taking photographs with dangerous objects. But is this simply a bad omen? Is she going too far this time around? Or is this sexy/dangerous art and we should just let the girl do her thing?

If that isn’t enough, there was blood involved in all this as well, apparently. If you want to see that, and more from the shoot, check out the (pretty gross) video below. READ FULL STORY »

New 'Inception' Poster: Is this the weirdest blockbuster ever?

Inception-posterA new poster for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming brain-twist thriller Inception has appeared. Besides the fact that it looks totally awesome and insane, it still tells us nothing about this blockbuster mystery film. We’ve got a great cast, dressed in spiffy clothes and toting spiffy guns. In the background the cityscape tilts upwards, Halo-style. According to the tagline, “Your mind is the scene of the crime.” Also, Tom Berenger is in this movie. Where am I?

Coming two years after Nolan’s The Dark Knight, Inception is the latest movie in a curious Hollywood subgenre: the film a director makes immediately after they make a megahit blockbuster. READ FULL STORY »

'Secretariat' trailer: Impossible to resist, so don't even try

I don’t think Secretariat is Diane Lane’s Blind Side, but the trailer makes it look like a total crowd-pleaser. You’ve got Lane as the perfectly-coiffed, feisty housewife trying to save her daddy’s farm. John Malkovich as the colorfully-dressed trainer on the brink of retirement who’s scared of her. The producers of Miracle, Invincible, and The Rookie. And, oh yeah, the true story of Secretariat, the racehorse that graced the covers of Time, Newsweek, and Sports Illustrated, won the 1973 Triple Crown, and ranked No. 35 on ESPN’s list of the 100 greatest athletes of the 20th Century. Watch it after the jump. READ FULL STORY »

'Cougar Town' recap: Jules and Grayson 'Sail Away' on the waves of love in the Red Wine Sea

This morning, Mandi blazed into my office all “OMG Cougar Town, big moment!” I hadn’t seen it yet, so I quickly pressed play and the whole time I was convinced the “big moment” she’d referred to would end up being the revelation that Laurie was pregnant. She’s allergic to birth control pills and latex, after all. Plus, her whole drama-hungry story line was kind of begging for that twist. I even prematurely wrote the following mediocre headline for this item: ‘Cougar Town’: Laurie gets her drama. BUT NO. It was just Julesy and Graysony indulging in their first kiss. Ho, hum. I know I should have pictured them actually doin’ it, but I prefer this moment, at the “far end” of his teasing lean-back as Jules attempted to take the plunge. He even accompanied the lean-back with a short spurt of air. Impressive! “Wow!” she burbled. It could have been all the wine. “It’s just like a mimosa except it has wine instead of champagne, and no orange juice!” READ FULL STORY »

Richard Gere and Topher Grace sign on as co-stars, Mike Tyson to appear on 'The View' (Excess Hollywood)

  • Richard Gere and Topher Grace have signed on to star in the spy thriller The Double, which centers on the murder of a senator. Richard Gere and Topher Grace have signed on to star in the spy thriller The Double, which centers on the murder of a senator. (Get it? The Double? And I wrote it twice? Aw, heck, cut me a break. We’re still one day from the weekend.) [THR]
  • On May 7, Mike Tyson will appear on The View in his first on-air interview with Barbara Walters since 1988 to promote his new Animal Planet series. “So what? Who cares?” said Joy Behar. [The Wrap]
  • Thomas Hayden Church is leaving the Showtime series Episodes, which stars Friends‘ Matt LeBlanc. I guess this means they’re officially on a break. [THR]
  • The producers of Rock of Ages have announced Constantine Maroulis will star in the national touring production of the show, which will kickoff in Chicago this September. “What about me?” asks Scott Savol.
  • E! has picked up six episodes of What’s Eating You, a series about compulsive eating disorders. One episode revolves around a woman who, every night, eats a roll of toilet paper dipped in pickle juice. That’s disgusting. Everyone knows paper towels are much more savory. [The Wrap]
  • Who else thinks paper towels and pickle juice should be two new cast members for Jersey Shore? Oh, and speaking of eating habits, Oprah’s network OWN has ordered Inside Rehab, a docu-series about eating disorders. [Deadline]
  • ABC has picked up The Six, a U.S. version of a Russian game show involving puzzle-solving. I will choose to imagine that “six” refers to the amount of vodka shots each contestant takes before attempting to solve their puzzle. [THR]
  • Juan Jose Campanella, the director of the Oscar-winning foreign film The Secret in Their Eyes, will make his English-language feature film debut with Heck, which will be adapted from the children’s novel by Dale E. Basye. The book follows a boy who dies and ends up attending a reform school, where Richard Nixon serves as a teacher, and Kirsten Dunst and Michelle Williams unintentionally take him down while wearing super-cute flag costumes.
