'Supernatural' recap: Where's your moose? And where's Pestilence?

Supernatural-Jared-DevilImage Credit: Michael Courtney/ The CWIt’s that time of year: time to beg for an extension. Once upon a time, I did it for research papers, and now,  I’m going to do it for Supernatural. There’s just far too much work for our boys to do in two episodes, and I think it might be a little overwhelming (both for them and us viewers). Admittedly, there have been episodes wasted on filler and funny — and there’s nothing wrong with that. But Sam and Dean now find themselves in a precarious position: They have two episodes to get their calloused man hands on two more of the horsemen’s rings, lure Lucifer back into his cage, and stop those around them from making big mistakes. It’s not enough time! But because 11th-hour additional episode orders don’t happen too often (and by that I mean never), let’s assume we’re stuck with only two episodes to wrap all this up and enjoy the sure-to-be-intense ride ahead. '30 Rock' recap: Love is weird... and sometimes gross

Filed under: Television and tagged: , , ,

30-Rock-Jane-ForteImage Credit: Ali Goldstein/NBCWe learned an important lesson last night: If you come across a peacock, do not let it mark you. On a 30 Rock episode that was more Liz Lemon eye roll than laugh till you pee, things never seemed to take off. Jack took a break from his two girlfriends and instead found companionship in pet peacock named Argus, Grizz is engaged to a Beyonce with an “F,” — and Will Forte guest-starred as Jenna’s cross-dressing boyfriend. If this was merely a filler before what I hope will be three superb final episodes, all is forgiven. But even though “Argus” wasn’t the greatest 30 Rock of all time, there were still some hilarious lines. Here are the 10 best: READ FULL STORY »

Okay, everyone who thinks last night’s Community was saved by the pantsing gag, needed to nix the annoying high schooler plot line, and could have used guest star Lisa Rinna in a much more hilarious way raise your hand. Yes. That’s more like it. Spoilers ahoy, Community members. READ FULL STORY »

'Jonah Hex' trailer: Megan Fox and Josh Brolin in the action-horror-western of the summer

Tagged:

Summer of 2011 will mark an epic showdown between comic book powerhouses: Marvel icons Thor and Captain America will battle with DC icon Green Lantern for box office supremacy. This year, conversely, is a chance for some lesser-known properties to hit the screen. We’ve already seen Kick-Ass and The Losers, and August brings Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Personally, I’m most excited about Jonah Hex, an adaptation of a the gruesomely bizarro horror-western. A trailer for the movie just hit the internet; check it out after the jump.

James Cameron building a 3-D camera for NASA

Filed under: News and tagged: , ,

James-Cameron-MarsImage Credit: NASA; Mark FellmanThe AP has news that Avatar director James Cameron is going to help build a 3-D camera on the next-generation Mars rover — called Curiosity — that’s set for launch next year. The plan for the camera had actually been scaled back for budget reasons, but Cameron personally lobbied NASA administrator Charles Bolden when they met in January. He’s now listed as a “co-investigator” for the camera team. Let’s all remember that James Cameron doesn’t kid around. Remember when he followed up the success of Titanic with a documentary about his actual exploration of the actual Titanic wreck. How soon do you think it’s going to be before NASA announces that Cameron is going to follow up his 3-D space epic about extraterrestrial life by…actually going to up into space?

Holy Manolo! 'Sex and the City' showrunner Michael Patrick King to 'Comeback' to television.

Get it? Oh, well, all you Valerie Cherish fans do. But good news first reported on Deadline: Sex and the City showrunner/The Comeback creator/current director of Sex and the City 2 Michael Patrick King will be returning to TV, as he’s working on a multi-year deal with Warner Bros. Television. King’s rep confirms that the writer is setting up a production company, which will work on “overseeing and nurturing” creative forces on the TV side.

Of course, this means we can look forward to seeing plenty of fashionable, funny folks on TV, thanks to King’s clever pen and wit. We’ll just have to cross our fingers that they stick around longer than Cherish did.

Who else is pumped to see that King is returning to the small screen? What kind of show would you like to see him behind next?

Rielle Hunter on today's Oprah: Her 'authentic' self?

Rielle-Hunter-Oprah-EdwardsOprah Winfrey had her high-profile interview with John Edwards’ mistress Rielle Hunter this afternoon. It comes as a bit of an anticlimax in the wake of GQ‘s profile of her from last month, if only because a lot of Hunter’s more gossipy bombshells about the endlessly sordid tale of her affair with the one-time presidential candidate have been picked over by now. Still, it made for some compelling TV to watch Oprah walk the line between sympathetic listener and skeptical inquisitor.

As in the GQ interview, Hunter had an endless supply of New-Age nuggets about helping Edwards find “his authentic self” and “live a life of truth.” What struck me as I was watching was how — dare I say — Oprah-esque Hunter often sounded when it came to spirituality. Still, under Oprah’s firm questions, it was not hard to see the limits of Hunter’s brand of mysticism, when anything Edwards did, no matter how unethical or sleazy or dishonest, could be explained away as just another step on a person’s path to enlightenment. I couldn’t help thinking back to a Salon post I’d read post-GQ that defended Hunter, not because the writer thought she was misunderstood or sympathetic, but because Hunter just sounded so dreadfully, terribly naive. Among the Oprah highlights (or, I guess, lowlights, depending on your point of view):

ABC Family cancels '10 Things I Hate About You.' Say it ain't so!

Filed under: News, Television and tagged: ,

10-things-i-hate-about-youImage Credit: Eric McCandless/ABCWe feared it might come true, and now it has. ABC Family has given the boot to 10 Things I Hate About You, The Hollywood Reporter says. The first flare that the series was in trouble went up two weeks ago when executive producer Carter Covington started tweeting that the show was on the bubble and needed all the fan support it could get. I expressed my love for the smart, funny series by writing a list of 10 Things I Hate About the Idea of No More 10 Things, which is now coming true, sadly.

Covington took to Twitter again today to announce the show’s cancellation: “Sad news… ABCFamily canceled the show :-( Thanks 2 our AMAZING fans – U R the reason I do this! Enjoy the last 5 eps – they’re fantastic!”

The show will get to finish out its season, THR reports, but with the good, comes the bad. The season ends on an “AWESOME cliffhanger,” Covington revealed to EW.com.

Please accept the following preview from Monday’s episode as my condolences. READ FULL STORY »

Betty White 'Match Game' marathon on May 8 is [BLANK]

Filed under: Television and tagged: ,

match-gameImage Credit: Everett CollectionGSN, the Game Show Network, will air a seven-hour “Best of Betty White” Match Game marathon on Saturday, May 8, to celebrate her hosting Saturday Night Live later that evening. According to GSN, among the highlights in the 14-episode marathon, which kicks off at 9 a.m. ET:

• Betty demonstrates exotic dancing.
• Betty answers the question, “Every time I go streaking, Allen Ludden makes me wear his [BLANK].”
• A fellow panelist throws an ice cube that lands in Betty’s blouse — and all the men volunteer to retrieve it.
• Richard Dawson pretends to woo Betty when host Gene Rayburn “catches” them in a lovers’ embrace.
• Game question: “Betty White said, ‘My husband Allen is not quite as funny as a barrel of monkeys, but he’s just as funny as a case of [BLANK].”

This should definitely get us in the mood for bawdy Betty White. Like, perhaps, the clip after the jump of Gene accusing Betty and Richard Dawson (another national treasure, in my book) of having played with his pant legs while he chatted with Charles Nelson Reilly. “You couldn’t tell the difference?” she says.
