'Real Time with Bill Maher' renewed for ninth season (yay!)

bill-maherImage Credit: HBOBill Maher’s left-leaning (and frequently hilarious) HBO talk show Real Time with Bill Maher has been renewed for a ninth season, Variety reports. Not only that, but the ninth season, which will air starting in February 2011, will feature 35 episodes instead of the normal amount of 24 episodes, which means more New Rules! As someone who doesn’t subscribe to HBO (I know, I’m such a sinner), I often catch up on Real Time as YouTube clips inevitably start circulating the web. And in a media landscape that’s so dominated by preordained red vs. blue dialogue, it’s a breath of fresh air to watch Maher — a guy who’s so outside the mainstream political box that he has the freedom to say truly “outrageous” things, and then make you crack up while he does.

So, I’m definitely down for some more Real Time. PopWatchers, what about you? Are you hoping the talk show makes it to the 2012 presidential election?

Patton Oswalt might be out of 'Beach Lane'; Why can't this guy catch a break?

Categories: Television

Patton-OswaltImage Credit: Jeffrey Mayer/WireImage.comWell, that was fast. Just three days after it was announced Patton Oswalt would star in Matthew Broderick’s comedy pilot Beach Lane, The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that the actor is leaving the series following a table read. The publication’s source tells them he was offered another role on the show, but it’s “unclear” if he is interested. (EW’s calls to Oswalt’s rep were not immediately returned.)

To make matters worse, this news comes on the heels of the demise of his Broadway show Lips Together, Teeth Apart, which was postponed after Megan Mullally exited the show. (The show would have marked his Broadway debut.) Come on, Hollywood: Oswalt seems to be a great guy. He’s funny, sharp, and as big of a fan of Joss Whedon as all of us here at EW. So why can’t this guy catch a break this month?

Who else is disappointed to hear that Oswalt might be out of Beach Lane?

Daniel Radcliffe returns to Broadway for musical debut in 2011

Categories: Stage/Theater

Daniel-RadcliffeDaniel Radcliffe will make his Broadway musical debut starring as J. Pierrepont Finch in a revival of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying set to bow in Spring 2011. The role, originated by Robert Morse in 1961 and resurrected by Matthew Broderick in 1995, is that of a young window-cleaner who undergoes a meteoric rise from the mail-room to Vice President of Advertising at the World-Wide Wicket Company. His “unorthodox and morally-questionable business practices” threaten both his career and his romance with Secretary Rosemary Pilkington (a part that has not yet been cast). Radcliffe made his Broadway debut in the play Equus in 2008, following a run in London’s West End. How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying will be directed and choreographed by Tony winner Rob Ashford (Thoroughly Modern Millie).

What do you say? I think Broadway is never a bad idea for a brave actor looking to stretch, as Radcliffe will be after finishing filming the final installment of Harry Potter. This will definitely be a new challenge — one that the singing clip embedded after the jump proves he’s up for… READ FULL STORY »

Taylor Lautner gets a love interest: Lily Collins

lily-collinsImage Credit: Bob Charlotte/PR PhotosLily Collins, who played the daughter of Leigh Anne Tuohy (Sandra Bullock) in the The Blind Side and is the real-life spawn of Phil Collins, has been cast opposite Taylor Lautner in the John Singleton-directed thriller Abduction. According to Deadline New York, she’ll play Lautner’s girlfriend, who goes on the run with him after he discovers his own picture on a missing persons site and reaches out to his real parents. The movie — described as a Bourne Identity for teens — will shoot in Pittsburgh this summer. So get ready for paparazzi, Steel City!

It’s been a while since I’ve seen The Blind Side, but I remember liking her. What else do we know about the 21-year-old: She’s worked as a news and entertainment correspondent for Nickelodeon, is a fashionista who you’ll frequently find on teenvogue.com, and went red for her role as Lucy in the 2011 comic book adaptation Priest, which stars Paul Bettany, Stephen Moyer, and Lautner’s Twilight buddy Cam Gigandet. Do you approve?

Your tweets are in the Library of Congress

Categories: Twitter

Twitter has donated its entire public tweet archive — which numbers in the billions since 2006 — to the Library of Congress, the nation’s oldest federal cultural institution that “seeks to spark imagination and creativity and to further human understanding and wisdom by providing access to knowledge through its magnificent collections, programs and exhibitions.”

Of course, the purpose is to catalog historic tweets such as President Obama’s upon winning the election. But now, the Library will have our musings on “history” as well. After the jump, I’ve taken the liberty of pulling out a few of my tweets that might “further human understanding and wisdom.”  READ FULL STORY »

Rumpelstiltskin stars in 'Shrek' poster: Who does he look like to you?

Categories: Movie Posters, Movies

shrek4You know what’s better than a parfait? Knowing the release of Shrek Forever After is just a little more than a month away. And because the film is headed to our multiplexes May 21, Dreamworks has begun rolling out images from the flick to tease our ogre-loving selves. (Well, my self actually loves the Gingerbread Man more, but you get my point.)

The fire-topped character in this poster is Rumpelstiltskin, the Brothers Grimm character who hated the process of adoption, so decided to exchange his straw-spun gold for the king’s daughter’s first-born. I’m guessing the reason his hair is so big is because it holds the knowledge of how to spell his name without spell-check. But who do you think he looks like? One of my editors says Yahoo Serious, but I think he looks more like one of the Troll dolls that’s currently living next to a stack of naked Barbies in a crate in my garage at home. All he’s missing is a belly jewel!

What say you, PopWatchers?

'American Idol': Andrew Garcia and Katie Stevens discuss song choice, 'having fun,' and prom dates

katie-andrewImage Credit: Michael Becker/FoxDouble elimination! Double dose of sadness? Andrew Garcia and Katie Stevens aren’t crying. Instead, the latest set of American Idol evictees are talking about eyewear and prom dates. First up is Andrew, and after the jump, the Connecticut teenager…

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Andrew, talk to me. What’s your depression level?
ANDREW GARCIA: My depression level is none. I mean, you feel bad ’cause you’re leaving performing on that big stage, but you can’t forget how far you came. I didn’t expect to go far, and to go as far as I did I’m thankful. And I made the tour and I’m going to be able to go out and have a job. And then I get to see my son.

Was he too young to appreciate that you were on American Idol?
Yeah, he just knew when it came on TV. He’d say, “Idol! Idol! Idol!”

When you sang “Hound Dog” this week, did you know you were in trouble?
I went out and I had fun. The crowd was amazing. I had fun. I felt good singing, I loved the arrangement. I wouldn’t change it.

How much of the arrangement did you change after meeting with Adam Lambert? READ FULL STORY »

'Glee': Madonna gives thumbs up for next week's episode

Categories: Glee, Madonna, Television

power-of-madonnaImage Credit: Kevin Mazur/WireImage.com; Michael Yarish/FoxNext Tuesday’s Glee, as Jane Lynch’s shot-by-shot remake of “Vogue” revealed, will be an all-out Madonna extravaganza, featuring such hit songs as “Express Yourself,” “Like a Virgin,” “Like a Prayer,” and “4 Minutes.” In the episode, Mr. Schuester asks the girls in glee club to select various Madonna tracks to sing, and the episode already has one major supporter — the Material Girl herself. “I think Mr. Schuester is very cute,” Madonna said in a statement to Fox, “and I’m glad he’s doing such a good job empowering the girls.” And… that’s all, Madonna? No comment on what you make of the show’s interpretation of your music? No praise for Glee‘s young ensemble cast? And no mention of the pure awesomeness that is Jane Lynch? Grumble, grumble…

Well, maybe Madge is simply going to let the episode speak sing for itself. PopWatchers, how pumped are you to see an hour’s worth of Madonna goodness? And do you think Glee will do justice to the pop star’s catalog, or does the whole tribute run the risk of coming off as hokey?

'Top Model' makes me miss 'Make Me A Supermodel'

make-me-a-supermodelImage Credit: Jason Kibbler/BravoLast night, I sat down to watch America’s Next Top Model and wondered, as I do almost every Wednesday, whether I had tuned in for a modeling competition show or America’s Next Top Fight. “Arguments about ‘being real’? Picking fights with your roommates? Barely concealed racial tension?,” Margaret Lyons writes in her recap of last night’s episode. Yes, Top Model has become less about modeling and more about nonsensical arguing. When Jessica yelled, “Get me out of here,” during a limo disagreement, I felt the same way and wished for the return of Bravo’s Make Me A Supermodel.

Some people enjoy reality shows for the drama, but I like competition shows likes Top Model and Project Runway because I like the artistic aspect and the final products — the photos, the clothes, etc. And that’s why I prefer the Bravo modeling series. It’s actually about modeling. The photo shoots look like something you’d see in a magazine. The contestants have to impress the judges with their photo and a catwalk every week. And the go-see is not just something you see once or twice during the series. Each week, the photo shoot winner gets to go on one and possibly even book it like a real, working model! What a concept!
