VH1 to launch a slew of (gasp!) buttoned-up programming. Is this a good thing?

xtina-AguileraImage Credit: Frank Micelotta/Getty ImagesVH1 is getting more real — and shockingly unshocking — with an across-the-board programming revamp that will include producing a record 44 original series this year, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Eschewing Flavor of Love and its ilk for more “authenticity” in its upcoming new reality, VH1 will bring viewers dozens of new shows such as You’re Cut Off, which aims to reform spoiled party girls, and Money Hungry, in which contestants can lose up to $10,000 of their own cash if they don’t cut calories. A whopping 40 percent of programming will return to the network’s original focus, music, starting with brand new Behind the Music and Storytellers episodes in June linked to Christina Aguilera’s forthcoming album Bionic.

As someone who lost perfectly good hours of her life to My Antonio, I welcome this possible resurgence of productivity; though I’ll probably lose those hours now to Behind the Music, which I have dearly missed, I will feel less bad about myself for that. What do you think of this VH1 makeover, PopWatchers? Are you ready for some Behind the Music, or will you miss watching various C-listers search for “love” on television?

Here, VH1′s official press-release run-downs of some of its other new shows: READ FULL STORY »

'Celebrity Apprentice': And the fired celebrity is...

Only on Celebrity Apprentice would you find a contestant posing the eternal question: “Are you shaved or are you hairy?” That was just one of many wonderfully curious moments in an episode that also included lots of grunting, Donald Trump’s newfound bandanna obsession, and the rarest of all things: an actual Sharon Osbourne sighting! My full recap will be up at 2am, but if you’ve already watched the episode and can’t wait to sound off, then keep reading after the jump for more. [SPOILER ALERT: Do not read on unless you have already watched Sunday's episode of Celebrity Apprentice.] READ FULL STORY »

'Doctor Who' recap: Matt Smith brings more than a bowtie to the reinvented title character!

Categories: Doctor Who, Sci-Fi, Sexytimes

Doctor-Who-Matt-SmithImage Credit: BBCMaybe it was one of those patented “perception filters,” but after watching last night’s excellent season premiere of Doctor Who, I’m suddenly no longer pining for David Tennant and Catherine Tate as our titular hero and his trusty companion. Now I’m totally jazzed to see what Matt Smith and Karen Gillan will bring to the respective roles.

It helped, of course, that “The Eleventh Hour” was a tense and funny bit of sci-fi, with the regenerated Doctor trying to hunt down an escaped intergalactic prisoner before an armed fleet of Atraxi detonated Earth in a scorched-planet strategy to execute him. The way things kicked off — with Smith’s Doctor trying to adjust to his new body while helping a lonely Scottish girl investigate a scary crack in her bedroom wall — was filled with classic suggest-don’t-show scare tactics. It’s brilliant what Who can do with half-opened doors, robotically repeated phrases, and a little mood music. Of course, there was humor in the intro, too. READ FULL STORY »

Joel Hodgson's 'Cinematic Titanic' invades Times Square

Categories: Sci-Fi, Total Trash

Cinematic-Titanic_320.jpg “Are you ready to watch a really s—ty movie?”  So asked Joel Hodgson, creator and original host of Mystery Science Theater 3000, before a packed Saturday-night house at New York City’s Nokia Theatre. The occasion: a live performance of Cinematic Titanic, his MST3K follow-up project with fellow castaways from the Satellite of Love. Primed after a decade of MST deprivation, the 2,100-strong crowd roared its assent.

Before Hodgson came on stage to announce the celluloid craptacular du jour, the night’s proceedings kicked off with Mary Jo Pehl, f.k.a. Pearl Forrester, who introduced CT‘s guest MC, David “Gruber” Allen. Allen, a deep-voiced vet of Freaks and Geeks and Gilmore Girls, performed a stand-up set with up-to-the-minute  jabs at the Tea Partiers and Toyota, then brought out erstwhile Tom Servo puppeteer J. Elvis Weinstein. Weinstein strapped on a bass guitar to duet with Gruber on a musical salute to scary, tear-stained clowns (no apologies to Smokey Robinson). Perhaps most enthusiastically received was “TV’s Frank” Conniff, rechristened DVD’s Frank in honor of CT‘s primary mode of distribution. Conniff wasted no time rousing the assemblage by ramming a stake into Twilight—Bella “likes the werewolf because he has hair on his junk”—and pitching his own kiddie takeoff, Teen Count Chocula. Finally, Hodgson arrived, along with Trace “Crow T. Robot” Beaulieu, to give shout-outs to his Titanic crewmates before they took their places left and right of the movie screen to commence the B-movie riffage.

Tonight’s B movie, Danger on Tiki Island (or, more suggestively, Brides of Blood), was a 1968 Filipino monster mash-up ripe for japery. READ FULL STORY »

Lady Gaga on 'American Idol': Oh la la?

Lady-Gaga-american-idolImage Credit: Lady Gaga: Albert L. Ortega/PR Photos; Idol: Fox Lady Gaga will be performing on American Idol May 5, according to a tweet she sent out late Friday night. “See you on American Idol. MAY 5th, Little Monsters,” she wrote, with a link to a performance of “Telephone” on a Japanese TV show.

I’m a little disappointed that Lady Gaga won’t be on May 4, too, as that week’s mentor, because holy crap could this season of Idols use a few lessons in star power, the art of performance, and how to distinguish themselves from other artists. I’m imagining Lady G in a wig made of, like, pulled-pork sandwiches trying to get Lee DeWyze be bolder or something. I’m imagining it…and loving it.

Are you excited to see Lady Gaga back on the Idol stage, PopWatchers?

'Idolatry': Can anyone stop a Crystal-Lee finale on 'American Idol'?

idolatryImage Credit: Frank Micelotta/Fox; Michael Becker/Fox (2)Crystal-Lee: It’s not a calorie-free lemonade mix coming to a grocery store near you, but rather, the tangy tonic that’s keeping American Idol‘s ninth season from tasting like a lukewarm glass of tap water. The question remains, however, with six weeks left in the competition, do any of the five remaining challengers to the Bowersox-DeWyze Supremacy have a chance to make it to the Nokia to perform “Momentum-Crushing Piece of Treacle 9.0″? 'American Idol': What should the Top 7 sing for 'Inspirational Songs' week?

Categories: American Idol

american-idol-7Image Credit: Michael Becker/FoxThis just in from the suits at American Idol: Enigma’s “Return to Innocence” is officially an “inspirational song.” So is “Dream Weaver” (note the word “dream” in the title). As is “Livin’ on a Prayer.” (Gina works the diner all day, yo!) In other words, we’ve got to accept that there are some wiggity wack jams on the list of songs available to the season 9 top 7 for Idol Gives Back week (with guest mentor Alicia Keys). But all is not lost. I’ve perused the full list of 77 ditties, and there were enough hidden gems — albeit not a whole lot of good stuff from the current decade — for me to create a dream set list (of songs not recorded by previous Idol champs, which is a recipe for #fail). Check out the “Inspirational Songs” list for yourself over at mjsbigblog, then make your own suggestions in the comments section. And for all my Idol news and commentary, follow me on Twitter @EWMichaelSlezak!

Crystal Bowersox: Bill Withers’ “Lovely Day”
Lee DeWyze: Jewel’s “Hands”
Siobhan Magnus: David Bowie’s “Changes”
Tim Urban: Incubus’ “Drive”
Casey James: Katrina and the Waves’ “Walking On Sunshine”
Michael Lynche: Crowded House’s “Don’t Dream It’s Over”
High School Student Aaron Kelly: Simon and Garfunkel’s “The Boxer”

Box-office futures market gets approved

Categories: Genres, Movies

It’s official: Government regulators at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission approved a futures market pegged to box-office receipts today. Approval was granted to Media Derivatives Inc. to launch Trend Exchange, which it hopes to do in the third quarter. If you read this week’s issue of EW, you’ll know that this is not the market that you or I can start bidding on—Trend Exchange will be limited to institutional investors only. (The Cantor Exchange, which would be open to the public, is still under review.) The approval came in spite of intense objections from Hollywood which fears the market could be easily manipulated—the head of the MPAA told EW’s Chris Nashawaty that it would be “nothing more than a platform for gambling.” What do you think? Good or bad idea? Are you planning on jumping in if the market gets running?
