Stewart and Colbert extend Comedy Central contracts through 'Indecision 2012'

daily-show-colbert-reportImage Credit: Norman Jean Roy; Martin CrookJon Stewart and Stephen Colbert have reached separate deals with Comedy Central to stay in their late-night chairs through the next presidential election. Stewart’s deal keeps him hosting The Daily Show through June 2013, while Colbert is now committed to The Colbert Report through the end of 2012. South Park may have been the series that truly put the network on the map (and remains its most beloved scripted fare), but there’s no question Stewart and Colbert are what gives it its cred. In a PopWatch poll just last week, Stewart and Colbert were voted readers’ favorite late-night tandem, with 44 percent of the vote. Since Stewart took over The Daily Show in 1999, it’s earned 32 Emmy nominations, including a record seven consecutive nods for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series. The Report has garnered 15 Emmy nominations since we were introduced to the word “truthiness” in 2005, including four consecutive nominations in that category.

Can you imagine a Comedy Central without Stewart of Colbert? Why would you want to?

PopWatch Confessional: Have you ever been too jealous to enjoy an on-screen relationship?

As all of us House fans read yesterday over on Michael Ausiello‘s blog, executive producer Katie Jacobs is acknowledging that a Thirteen-Chase union could be a possibility in the future. Of course, they’re not confirming anything yet, but I can’t help but angrily eat some office chocolate and mourn this possibility while using Adobe to craft a Thirteen dartboard. Because, in my delusional world, Chase is mine. As I’ve mentioned before, I’m lucky enough to have a boyfriend who bears a resemblance to Jesse Spencer (yes, I’m bragging, sorry), which makes me brim with jealousy whenever I see Chase romancing any of his coworkers. I’m even pretty sure that back when Cameron was hooking up with Chase, I actually screamed at my television, “Cameron, back off my man!” before realizing I was talking about fictional people who exist inside a television set that does not respond to my angry comments.

Of course, since the person I’m currently dating looks like Chase, my jealousy does seem a teensy, leeettle big logical, right? But what if I told you I have felt the same jealousy towards people I’ve never met who do not look remotely like anyone I’ve dated? I’m crazy, right? I totally am. Because, as a child, I couldn’t bear to watch the Home Improvement episodes featuring Randy’s girlfriend Michelle, because did she ever defend JTT’s looks in the great sixth grade debate of who’s hotter: JTT or Taylor Hanson? I was the one college girl who didn’t tune into Newlyweds because it would make me feel the sting of knowing my 13-year-old crush, Nick Lachey, had already found true love with someone else who thought 98 Degrees and Rising was a totally catchy album with awesome spoken word verses. (For the time being, at least.) And then there were those kinky, difficult-to-watch cage scenes involving Lost‘s Sawyer, who just didn’t deserve that Kate, because he belonged to this Kate. At least, in my Davidoff Cool Water-scented dreams. (I will, however, let his relationship with Juliet slide. I’ve hit the seventh stage of acceptance when it comes to that hook-up.)

What about you, PopWatchers? Have you ever found yourself too jealous to enjoy an on-screen relationship? (Come on, Office fans. You know that you wanted to throw up in that this-is-so-not-fair kind of way after watching the Jim-Pam kiss on Casino Night.) Please tell me I am not alone here. For my psychological well-being.

P.S. I left out the part about me hoping at the end of Lord of the Rings that Elijah Wood would end up single because I had a crush on him AS A HOBBIT. WHAT’S WRONG WITH ME?

'Castle': Beckett gets a love interest. Let the games begin!

Categories: Castle, Television, TV Recap

Castle-Stana-Trucco_320.jpg Image Credit: Karen Neal/ABCI’m not afraid to admit I teared up watching Castle last night. Probably not at the part you think — at the end, when Castle looked sad watching Beckett chat with robbery detective Tom Demming (Michael Trucco, who’ll recur for the rest of the season). But when Esposito, cradling his old partner, introduced him first to Ryan, then said, “And this is my other partner, Castle.” I’m a sucker for male bonding, and that was the ultimate. 'Mad Men' returns July 25: Mark your period-specific desk calendars

Mad Men is officially set to return for its fourth season at 10 p.m. Sunday, July 25, according to The Hollywood Reporter. So that is when we will learn what’s to become of the dissolved Sterling Cooper and the dissolved Draper marriage. And whether this heralds a new, lighter, screwball-comedy era for Mad Men, as that finale kind-of hinted. And how much fabulous early-to-mid-’60s fashion you can cram into one show.

Are you counting the days until Mad Men‘s return, PopWatchers? Is your anticipation heightened even more now that creator Matthew Weiner is hinting there could be only two more seasons after this? (Related: If you clicked on that link, am I the only one who does want to see Don Draper in a leisure suit, contrary to AMC’s intimations?)

'RuPaul's Drag Race' recap: Top moments from last night's clip show

rupaul-dragraceImage Credit: LogoAs a run-up to next week’s two-and-a-half-hour finale extravaganza — that’s one hour of the actual show, one hour of reunion, and a half-hour of spin-off Untucked — last night’s episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race wasn’t just a regular installment of main stage action, of course. Rather, it was “The Main Event Clip Show,” a sprite look back at the highs and lows of the season. In that vein, rather than just a straight-up recap here on PopWatch, let’s take a look at the highs of last night’s episode. Because, honestly, can you truly recap what was essentially a recap show itself? Here goes:

• That dramatic opening! Talk about, as RuPaul would say, an “eleganza extravaganza”! J’adore the ridiculous heightened-ness of it all — RuPaul amongst balloons, belting diva anthem “Main Event” from her latest album. It was the perfect launch, dripping with silly decadence. But honestly, RuPaul is always werquing in some product placement, what with it being her own song, right? A gurl’s gotta eat, but more on that in just a second…

'24' recap: Et tu, Madame President?

Categories: 24, Mini TV Watch, Television

24-Kiefer-9-10_320.jpg Image Credit: FoxAllison Taylor, you truly vex me. Wasn’t it just a few hours ago that you excoriated Rob Weiss and General Brucker for wanting to submit to Samir’s demands by saying something presidential like “the worst will happen, we’ll deal with it. Because that’s what we do. Americans don’t stay down, we rise up together in times of crisis, we carry on, is that clear?”  So where was that can-do attitude when it came to the Russians, eh woman? Sandra Bullock's sister dispels rumors that she spent time with Sandra Bullock

Internet’s all abuzz today because Sandra Bullock’s sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado, proprietor of a blog called Confections of a (Closet) Master Baker, wrote a post informing the world that reports she and her cuckolded, Oscar-winning sister spent Easter together were hella not true. In the blog post — which appears to have since disappeared from the sugary site, but which various websites including our friends over at People partially transcribed beforehand — Gesine explained that she and her husband spent Easter in Chicago, and therefore she could not, repeat, not have been at a New England inn with her sister. Aziz Ansari gives you five reasons to watch as he hosts the MTV Movie Awards

Aziz-Ansari-mtvImage Credit: Soul Brother/FilmMagic.comHere’s a hosting announcement that makes us giddy/giggly: Aziz Ansari — who routinely swipes scenes as Diddy-in-training Tom Haverford on NBC’s Parks and Recreation — shall serve as emcee of the 19th annual MTV Movie Awards, which will be broadcast live on June 6. “I thought it would be a good fit — I love doing stand-up and I love making short films,” notes Ansari. He adds: “Hopefully this is a stepping stone to hosting the Nickelodeon Toddlers’ Choice Awards. It’s a new awards show that I’m pitching to Nickelodeon. The thing about that is, you don’t know who’s going to win. It could be like, Favorite Movie: Peanut Butter. ‘But that’s not even a movie!’ ‘Well, they want peanut butter, so that’s the winner.’” We asked the breakout comedian/Human Giant star/Bieber nemesis, who also appears in June 4′s Get Him to the Greek, for five reasons to tune in to MTV’s night of golden popcorn. See his answers after the jump. (Hint: One involves Michael Bay and genitalia. If that doesn’t get you to take a look, we don’t know what will!) READ FULL STORY »

'Dancing With the Stars': Movie Night is liiiiiiiive!

From Hollywood! Dancing With the Stars is blowing my mind more than usual by only airing for an hour and a half tonight. I’m taking suggestions for how to spend the 30 extra life minutes DANCMSTR Len Goodman has granted me. You know he’s running the show. The whole show. This grand façade we’ve been calling “reality.” Len Goodman controls the universe. It’s his world; Bruno Tonioli just plants the flowers in it. And Kate Gosselin is still there.

Discuss the Week 5 performance show and nominate your Hidden Gems of the Week here, then come back tomorrow morning for my full recap.

ABC Family's '10 Things I Hate About You' on the bubble?

10-things-i-hate-about-youImage Credit: Eric McCandless/ABCJust as I was starting to heal from ABC Family’s cancellation of The Middleman — yes, I realize it’s been almost two years — comes word that I might need to be worried about the fate of another ABC Family series: the smart, witty 10 Things I Hate About You.

Last Friday, executive producer Carter Covington tweeted that the “show is on the bubble and we need all the eyeballs we can get!” Oh no, I thought and immediately added #save10things to my next tweet. Covington later tweeted that the “show still has a good chance at a pick up if we can show them how much fans love it!”

While ABC Family “hasn’t said much either way” about the show’s chances for a renewal, “they know how competitive the time slot is,” Covington tells EW.com. “I know they love the show, but our ratings continue to slide week to week. I’m hoping our vocal and passionate fan base can let them know how much they love 10 Things.” (UPDATE: A rep for ABC Family told EW.com: “We are four episodes into the run of 10 all-new episodes, and no decision has been made about any further pick up.”)

I know no better way to show my love for the show than to list 10 Things I Hate About the Idea of No More 10 Things:

1. The loss of a series that is intelligent, funny, and sweet in high school without ever being cruel.

2. No more watching Lindsey Shaw and Ethan Peck give Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger a run for their money in the chemistry department. Speaking of sparks, Patrick (Peck) shows off his jealous side in tonight’s new episode when Kat (Shaw) teams up with a handsome Brit in her campaign to get the school to adopt Meatless Mondays.
