'Saturday Night Live' Gabourey Sidibe promos: Can she do funny?

I found myself unexpectedly chuckling as I sat here watching the set of four just-released Saturday Night Live promos highlighting Gabourey Sidibe’s hosting gig this coming weekend. Before seeing them, I was questioning Sidibe taking the starring role on the comedy show: Is she a big enough star? Is there enough fodder for the writers? Heck, is she funny enough?

But with these promos — which you can watch below — I feel like at least the last question is cleared up, as Sidibe deftly joked around with cast member Andy Samberg, imploring him to take off his pants at one turn. Enjoy here:

'16 and Pregnant: Life After Labor': Dr. Drew makes teen girls cry

16-Pregnant-ReunionImage Credit: MTVRaise your hand if an hour and a half of catching up with teen moms was a bit much for you. Yeah, me too. Or perhaps I’m just used to profanity-riddled “reunion” specials where castmates go at each other like lions fighting over a rotting carcass in the wildness. None of that happened on this 16 and Pregnant post-finale special. The closest we got was Dr. Drew Pinsky acting as though teen mom tears were the only source for his secret power of faux empathy. But that wasn’t nearly as entertaining to watch as profane belligerents; in fact, it was borderline awkward.

But to its credit, the special updated us on what the teen moms from season 2 have been up to besides crying, wearing lots eye makeup, and parenting. Specifically, we got relationship dish. Here’s what we learned: READ FULL STORY »

Idol-top-7-AliciaImage Credit: Michael Becker/FoxWe interrupt this on-the-scene recap to report this breaking news: Drops of water are falling from the sky in Los Angeles. Coffee shop patrons, please congratulate yourselves for being at a place that serves hot drinks while something cold is happening outside. And American Idol audience members, please pretend this is like one of those rainy days in elementary school when you got to have recess inside. Ooo, how exciting! READ FULL STORY »

'16 and Pregnant' finale: 10 reflections on an infuriating episode

16-Pregnant-10Image Credit: MTVNot to sound like a deranged Care Bear or anything, but teen mom Kailyn really needed a big hug last night. Between her selfish mother, almost completely absent father, and her immature teen boyfriend, she was largely alone in life. But in stepped boyfriend Jo’s mom, Janet, who was basically the nicest woman alive. Am I being dramatic? Maybe a little…. READ FULL STORY »

Robert Downey Jr. as the Wizard in an 'Oz' prequel?

robert-downey-jr-240.jpgImage Credit: Ethan Miller/Getty ImagesIt could happen, according to the LA Times, which reported last night that Disney has put a Wizard of Oz prequel on “a fast track of sorts” with Robert Downey Jr. in talks to star as the wizard, and Sam Mendes (who just got his plate cleared now that Bond 23 is on hold indefinitely) and Adam Shankman (Hairspray) on the short list to direct. (Production Weekly also reported Mendes and Downey on its Twitter feed, and Perez Hilton reported on Friday that Downey and Johnny Depp are in the running for the starring role.) The project, scripted by Whole Nine Yards writer Mitchell Kapner based on L. Frank Baum’s Oz books, tells the pre-Emerald City story of the Great and Powerful Oz, back when he was a charlatan in Kansas working in a traveling circus. The Times describes the wizard as ”a more dark and complex character in the Roth/Kapner version than the desperate and doddering wizard of the MGM musical (played by Frank Morgan) would suggest.” READ FULL STORY »

'American Idol' Top 7 tackle 'Inspirational Songs': How did they fare?

american-idol-7Image Credit: Michael Becker/FoxBullet dodged: The producers of American Idol may have genuinely believed that Enigma’s “Return to Innocence” was an excellent choice for tonight’s “inspirational songs” theme — they did, after all, put it on their list of 77 pre-approved tracks — or maybe they were just setting a trap to stop the surprising run of a contestant whose name rhymes with “Grim Bourbon.”  Either way, nobody took the bait, and the Bandzilla backup singers were not forced to break into full-fledged Gregorian chant mode. Whew. [SPOILERS AHEAD, west-coast readers, so don't say I didn't warn you!] READ FULL STORY »

Coach Taylor's heading back to prehistoric times?

Kyle-ChandlerImage Credit: Janet Mayer/PR PhotosAs Michael Ausiello reported today, it looks like Kyle Chandler will be taking the plum lead role in Terra Nova, the upcoming Steven Spielberg-produced sci-fi series. While I have supreme confidence in Chandler’s acting abilities, I have a sneaking suspicion I’m going to have a bit of a hard time thinking of him as anyone other than Coach Taylor. Which is partly his fault for making his character in Friday Night Lights so darn believable and three-dimensional.

Apparently, the series will follow a futuristic family that time-travels back to the era of the dinosaur. (No word on whether it happens during a routine expedition.) And although I doubt it’ll happen, I have to say I’m hoping for a scene where Chandler confronts an iguanodon who missed practice because it had to stay home to take care of its alcoholic father.
