'Jersey Shore' takes over 'Archie' comics: Meet Reggie 'The Complication'

archie-and-friends-jersey-shoreAs if The Jersey Shore omnipresence wasn’t annoying enough, now the MTV reality show is taking over a revered — to me anyway — pop culture icon: Archie comics. Come July, the Riverdale gang is heading to the Riverdale Shore, a debaucherous, GTL-laden locale modeled after the Jersey Shore.

In the issue, Archie and co. meet and mingle with their tanned counterparts, who also happen to be the cast of a fictional reality show, and soon the once-wholesome Riverdale crew want to be reality stars, too. In fact, they’re so infatuated with the Riverdale Shore contingent that they get Jersey Shore-style makeovers — from carrot-hued tans to hair bumps and gels.

Having been an avid Archie comic collector when I was younger, I was totally infatuated with their simple world, where their biggest problems were Archie’s jalopy and Jughead’s hunt for a burger and fries. Now that they’ve gone all MTV on us, what’s next? Will Lindsay Lohan be the new kid in town? Will Archie cheat on Veronica with a tattooed mistress?

The writers behind the Archie comics may be trying to reach a new audience, but stooping down to this level (i.e. Reggie is renamed “The Complication”) is a fast way to alienate loyal readers. Though I am curious to see if there will be a mallard-type phone in the house.

Who else is with me? What do you think of Archie & Friends riffing off The Jersey Shore?

Brittany Snow to star in indie drama, David Beckham to look good on 'The View' (Excess Hollywood)

  • Hairspray‘s Brittany Snow has been tapped for the leading role in 96 Minutes. The independent drama follows two college girls held hostage by high-school-aged hijackers. I’m assuming the title refers to the amount of time the hijacking takes place, and not the time into the movie in which my bladder decides the extra-large Diet Coke from concessions was a bad idea. [Variety]
  • David Beckham will join Barbara & Co., on The View this Wednesday to talk about being injured, hot topics, and…oh, who are we kidding? We don’t care about the chit-chat — we just want to look at him. [AP]
  • Director Greg Mottola (Superbad) has been tapped to pen the screenplay for Paramount’s adaptation of Leanne Shapton’s book Important Artifacts. The film will star Brad Pitt and Natalie Portman as two rowdy teens hoping to lose their virginity with a pal named McLovin. Oops, sorry, wrong movie. [THR]
  • Fracture director Gregory Hoblit has helped an untitled Castle Rock drama come together — the director has signed on to helm a film written by Frank Baldwin. [THR]
  • Paul McCartney plans to reissue his post-Beatles catalog through Concord Music Group, and not EMI Group or Tim Urban. [Reuters]
  • Current Dancing With the Stars cast member Pamela Anderson will host Montreal’s Jugs Just for Laughs comedy festival. [THR]
  • Things are looking pretty good for Ugly Americans: Comedy Central announced they have ordered more episodes of the animated series. [THR]

Site of the Day: The '120 Minutes' archive

Categories: Site of the Day

Some seven years in the making,  the 120 Minutes Archive has compiled an exhaustive log of MTV’s alt-rock video show 120 Minutes (and its successor Subterranean), which includes playlists for 585 episodes, spanning 21 years, and links to thousands and thousands of videos played on the shows. Be careful. What started out as an innocent reminiscing on my former love of the Sugarcubes has turned into an hourlong marathon of clicking Sonic Youth, Cure, and Primus videos. Impressive, obsessive, and sure to remind you of a really bad haircut. READ FULL STORY »

Tori Spelling to host talk show: Who should her co-host be?

tori-spellingImage Credit: John M. Heller/Getty ImagesIs Donna Martin set to be the next Oprah? The LA Times is reporting that ABC is developing a daytime talk show for Tori Spelling, best known for her role as the virginal Martin on the sudsy classic Beverly Hills, 90210 and current star (along with husband Dean McDermott) of Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood. The show will feature Spelling and a yet-to-be-cast male co-host, and have a “Will & Grace vibe.”

The most important question is, who should be her co-host? It could go a couple of ways: The show could cast someone who is already part of her life, or hire someone she’s not familiar with — either another actor or comic, or a complete unknown. I’m against the idea of it being Dean; I like him enough, and it’s fun to watch him interact with Tori on their show, but a little independence never hurt anyone. If you watch Tori & Dean, you know she’s got tons of colorful characters surrounding her, including “the guncles” (gay uncles) and a sassy, longtime best friend. One of them might work, but you always risk alienating the audience if the co-hosts have too many inside jokes or feel like, for the sake of their friendship, they can’t be totally honest with each other.

I think the best bet would be bringing on an established performer. Look for some of my ideas after the jump (and then share yours!): READ FULL STORY »

'Lost': What should the actors do next?

Lost-The-Last-RecruitImage Credit: Mario Perez/ABCYou may not want to think about Lost ending, but you must. The actors sure are. Take Daniel Dae Kim. After shooting the Hawaii Five-O remake pilot opposite Alex O’Loughlin, he’s set to star in the feature film Deathgames, with Samuel L. Jackson and Twilight‘s Kellan Lutz. According to the Hollywood Reporter‘s Heat Vision blog, he’ll play a prisoner, like Lutz, forced by a big bad (Jackson) to fight in a modern gladiator arena to entertain the online masses. His character is described as “an artist who happens to be a master of kendo (samurai-style sword fighting), a skill that comes in handy when he competes for his life and his wife’s.” It sounds a little Gymkata-y, but who wouldn’t want to costar in a film with Jackson playing an evil mastermind. The scenery will be chewed, and it will be delicious! Plus, he gets to kick a little ass, show his emotional side, and only wait two hours to know how the story ends. Well done, I say.

What would you like to see the stars of Lost do next? Get creative. Write them a role in an existing show (like how about Jorge Garcia doing a guest arc on The Big Bang Theory next season as some kind of nemesis for Sheldon?), or put them in a film that’s been announced but has yet to be cast…. You might just see your pitches in an EW.com gallery.

'South Park' creators 'warned' by radical Muslim website: Um, holy [bleep]!

south-park-censoredSouth Park has been tackling so many sacred cows and hot potatoes for so long now — from Scientology to Steven Spielberg, NAMBLA to the N-word — that when I watched last week’s episode, I barely winced when creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone decided to celebrate South Park‘s 200th episode by taking on the depiction of the Muslim prophet Muhammad, for the second time.

Then, on Sunday, Revolutionmuslim.com, a radical Islamic website, reportedly posted an item about the South Park episode referencing Theo van Gogh, the Dutch filmmaker who was killed by a Muslim extremist for his 2004 short documentary Submission, about women, violence, and Islam. “We have to warn Matt and Trey that what they are doing is stupid and they will probably wind up like Theo van Gogh for airing this show,” said the post. “This is not a threat, but a warning of the reality of what will likely happen to them.” The site then featured a graphic photo of the mutilated filmmaker, and published the addresses of Comedy Central New York offices and the South Park production company in Los Angeles. Finally, it embedded a video of a radical Muslim preacher calling for the assassination of anyone who has “defamed” Muhammad which included photos of Parker, Stone, and van Gogh.

As the characters on South Park would say: Holy [bleeping] [bleep]! READ FULL STORY »

'Glee' get cut off? Watch 'Like a Prayer' here!

Categories: Glee, Television, Whining

Glee-Like-A-PrayerImage Credit: Michael Yarish/FoxI was a DVR victim last night. And the worst thing is, I saw it coming. I fast-forwarded through American Idol to watch the performances, then eagerly clicked on Glee…. It was still Idol. I knew Peter (my DVR/life partner) would cut off the end, even though he didn’t want to, and of course, he did. Right after Finn told Jesse to walk with him to the auditorium. A Fox spokesperson tells EW, ”While the producers always aim to end the show on time, American Idol is a live performance show and as with all live programming, there are unpredictable elements that affect running time.” I get that. You could argue that if Glee means that much to me, I might want to pad the record time to allow for Idol overage. But I can’t. Not when Tuesday at 10 p.m. involves Justified and Parenthood (and The Good Wife, which returns next week — tip, Peter will then record the 11 p.m. Justified repeat). After the jump, watch what you missed if you also found yourself yelling at your TV — the “Like a Prayer” ensemble number, complete with a gospel choir. I got chills. Kurt’s voice has never sounded more angelic.

UPDATE: Fox will repeat the episode Friday at 9 p.m. EST. READ FULL STORY »

'Smallville' creators developing new TV projects

Categories: Television

Smallville creators Al Gough and Miles Millar, who departed the CW show in 2008, have signed a two-year deal with Sony Pictures TV to develop projects for network and cable, says the Hollywood Reporter. No details were given on the sorts of projects they’d be shepherding, but, let’s see: aside from the young Superman saga, their joint credits include Spider-Man 2 and the upcoming adaptation of the alien-takes-refuge-as-a-human-high schooler novel I Am Number Four (for Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg). Also, Shanghai Noon and Shanghai Nights. Do you want to see them keep exploring the angst of supernatural teens — my vote, I can’t get enough — or return to lighthearted, action-packed adult fare (just not Shanghai Dawn)?

Clip du jour: 'ALF' outtakes are foul on so many levels

I learned a few things by watching the bad-language blooper reel from ALF. First, life is too long I guess, because I totally watched the whole thing. Second, Alf was even more grotesque than I remembered. Third, that show was godawful. And finally, ALF was a really terrible place to work. Come for the sexual harassment, stay for the nonsense cursing! Also the regular, non-sexual kind of harassment! READ FULL STORY »
