Who should direct the next James Bond movie... if there is a next James Bond movie?

Categories: HeadScratcher, Movies

Quantum-of-SolaceImage Credit: Susie AllnuttJames Bond will return, alright, just like the closing credits always promise. Just not for awhile. As EW previously reported, Bond 23 has been delayed indefinitely, while MGM continues looking for a new owner. The business back story is too long and boring to get into here — suffice to say that after Sony rebooted the series with Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace, the rights reverted back to MGM, which has been in a state of semi-suspended animation since it went up for sale in November — but the bottom line is that 007 has some unexpected time off. A script has already been written (by Frost/Nixon scribe Peter Morgan, along with longtime Bond writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade), and Daniel Craig has promised to wear the tuxedo again, but the delay raises questions about who will direct. Sam Mendes was reportedly attached — he supposedly left Preacher to do the Bond movie — but we be he may now be looking for something else to do.

All of which got us wondering: When Bond 23 does go back into production, and if Mendes has moved onto another project, who should direct? Over the years, some pretty big names have tried to get their hands on the franchise: Steven Spielberg went on to make Indiana Jones movies after he got turned away by Bond’s producers, and Quentin Tarantino tried to buy the rights to Casino Royale before MGM snapped them up. But who else should be entrusted to direct the most successful spy franchise in history? Peter Jackson? James Cameron? Vincent Gallo? Lars von Trier? We’re open to any suggestions, Pop Watchers…

St. Olaf Glee Club presents the music video 'Betty White Lines'

A friend perusing Joe. My. God. just sent me a link to funnyman Frank DeCaro, porn star-turned-singer Fredrick Ford, and The Q Guide To The Golden Girls author Jim Colucci‘s musical tribute to Betty White. It splices together some of White’s best quips (both in and out of character) with original lyrics such as “‘Betty White line/flowing through my mind/ ‘stead of Nightline/We watch her to unwind.” Watch it after the jump. William Shatner sings 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' with Taiwan's Susan Boyle

A reason to tune into Lopez Tonight this evening: Lin Yu Chun, a.k.a. ”Taiwan’s Susan Boyle,” makes his American late-night talk show debut — and sings a duet with William Shatner. Well, it’s more like he belts out the Bonnie Tyler part of “Total Eclipse of the Heart” like he did Whitney Houston’s version of “I Will Always Love You” on the Taiwanese talent show Super Star Avenue, and Shatner turns the man part into his trademark spoken word. Sneak peek after the jump.

Bonus clip: On Tuesday’s Lopez Tonight, Brendan Fraser introduced his new videogame, Brendan Fraser’s Wii Clap. (Still funny.)

Zoe Saldana: Does she win back her fashion all star title?

Zoe-SaldanaI’ve got to hand it to Zoe Saldana: The girl is clearly making up for her Oscar dress debacle with a parade of smart choices on the red carpet recently, including this edgy suede Balmain number she wore to last night’s premiere of The Losers (left).

Taking a step back, Saldana has experienced an interesting trajectory in the world of red carpet fashion. Last spring she came up from what seemed like out of nowhere to wow us with consistently beautiful pieces while promoting Star Trek. Thanks to that summer blockbuster, her name got more bold-faced by the second and pretty soon she was appearing on red carpets left and right, showing off her style acumen. READ FULL STORY »

Johnny Depp as Ferris Bueller, and other awesome re-imagined movie posters

ferris-bueller-johnnydeppLooks like Ferris Bueller is not too happy about missing school. At least, that’s what it might have looked like had Johnny Depp accepted the lead role in the John Hughes series, which he was offered before Matthew Broderick eventually signed on.

File this under A for Awesome: The good folks over at Moviefone decided to re-imagine movie posters with the images of actors originally offered each film’s starring roles, with help from some nifty computer tricks. Some of my favorites: Will Smith as Neo in The Matrix, Ralph Macchio as Marty McFly in Back to the Future, and Al Pacino and Meg Ryan as Edward and Vivian in Pretty Woman. But where’s John Travolta as Forrest Gump? Julia Roberts as Viola from Shakespeare in Love? Leo DiCaprio as Dirk Diggler in Boogie Nights?

Either way, this is cool, no?

'American Idol': Christina Aguilera reveals she'll appear on the finale

Christina-AguileraImage Credit: Lester Cohen/WireImage.comOn the heels of visits from Alicia Keys and Miley Cyrus, American Idol is welcoming yet another diva to this show this year: Christina Aguilera. The singer revealed yesterday during a radio interview that she’ll appear on the show’s season finale on May 26, according to MTV, although Fox would not confirm the report. There are scant few details beyond the fact that she’ll be singing and that her visit is, conveniently, just a week before she drops her new album, Bionic, on June 8. The first single from the album, “Not Myself Tonight,” has already hit the ‘net, but it leaves something to be desired. Hopefully her next, and better, single will be out in time for her to perform on Idol.

Of this news, I must say: It excites me. Granted, it doesn’t sound like she’ll be mentoring since it’s the finale — and goodness knows this year’s crop could use a little bit of help from a superstar like Aguilera. But I’m just happy to see her. I’ve missed Xtina lately, and I’m ready to welcome her and her Bionic self back with open arms. Personally, I’m hoping that her Bionic reincarnation is a little more Stripped, a little less Back to Basics, if you know what I mean, and I hope she showcases it all on the Idol stage.

PopWatchers, does this news excite you? Are you ready for Xtina’s Idol-rific comeback?

New $100 bill: Watch the action-packed trailer!

I’ve been in the market for a new movie trailer to remind me of how rich I am not, so this latest “$100″ installment of the new Bills, Bills, Bills franchise co-produced by the U.S. Mint and Destiny’s Child is perfect. (Watch it after the jump.) The dramatic closeups of the 3-D SECURITY RIBBON and BELL IN THE INKWELL really speak to me. From now on, I will demand that the ATM pay me only in Franklins and I’ll walk around tripping everyone out with my COLOR-SHIFTING 100s. They’ll be like, “Am I in the Haunted Mansion?” and I’ll reply, “No, you’re in Annie Barrett’s House of Holograms.” And then they’ll snatch away the bill and flee, and since I have not-great reflexes and a damn near-daunting capacity for conflict avoidance, I’ll just let them. 'I Dream of Jeannie' movie eyes a screenwriter. I'm blinking in anticipation.

I-Dream-of-JeannieImage Credit: Everett CollectionI have always been a fan of I Dream of Jeannie. I watched every single episode on Nick at Nite in the ’90s, dressed as (a modest) Jeannie as a fourth-grader, and squealed with delight after unwrapping the complete first season on DVD this past Christmas. Yet, I had never desired to see the Barbara Eden-Larry Hagman classic series find its way to the big screen…until now.

You can’t really blame me. We’ve seen the film go through so many iterations, it seemed bound to suffer a disaster of epic, Bewitched-2005 proportions. At one point, Lindsay Lohan was considered for the role of Jeannie. (So was Jessica Alba, Amanda Bynes, and Jessica Simpson. What’s next? Miley Cyrus up for an I Love Lucy reboot? Blasphemy!) But now, the L.A. Times reports that New York playwright Sheila Callaghan is rumored to be attempting a script. One reason I’m optimistic: Callaghan has already penned episodes of The United States of Tara, so she knows how to handle a character that wears lots of different outfits. Also (and more seriously), she has touched on feminist themes in her writing, something she could fold well into an adaptation of a series as dated and feminist-unfriendly as Jeannie.

So does that mean she’ll deliver a script that leads to a movie closer to 1995′s The Brady Bunch Movie than the ’05 Bewitched? I certainly hope so. What better way to deal with a story about a man who allows a subservient to cook, clean, and turn his backyard into paradise than to laugh at the series’ backwards themes? Of course, the real question is how they find an actress without a bellybutton to star.

Are you curious about this possible turn in the Jeannie movie saga, PopWatchers? Or should Jeannie just be contained in her purple lamp bottle?

Carrie Underwood makes a surprise visit to 'Ellen' and talks wedding planning

Fresh off her Entertainer of the Year win at Sunday’s ACM Awards, Carrie Underwood made a surprise visit yesterday to The Ellen DeGeneres show, where the American Idol alum gave away tickets to the show’s charity special, Idol Gives Back, and talked about her upcoming nuptials to Canadian hockey player, Mike Fisher.

What we learn from her visit is: Carrie isn’t a bridezilla, she wants a small wedding, and she thinks Ellen is doing a great job on Idol. And if you want to experience some jewelry envy, check out her massive yellow diamond engagement ring. Carrie simply says, “He did goood.” Good, indeed! Watch Carrie’s couch time with Ellen in the clip after the jump: READ FULL STORY »
