Rock nerds unite for the Rush movie trailer!

Move over Iron Man 2. Step aside Robin Hood. Back of the the line A-Team. I’ve just seen the trailer for the film that’s leap-frogged to the front of my summer must-see list — and it stars three of the pastiest Canadian dudes you’ll ever lay your eyes on. That’s right, I’m talking about Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage, an awesome-looking documentary of the prog maestros behind classics like “Tom Sawyer,” “Limelight,” and “Red Barchetta” — the unofficial soundtrack to every Dungeons & Dragons marathon of the past 30 years. You may also recall Paul Rudd and Jason Segel’s loving tribute to the band in last year’s I Love You, Man. READ FULL STORY »

William Shatner as Governor General of Canada?

If a Facebook movement can land Betty White a hosting gig on Saturday Night Live, can it score William Shatner the role of Governor General of Canada? One fan, who has never met Shatner, nor knows if he has any desire to serve in politics, has started a page campaigning for Prime Minister Stephen Harper to nominate him when Michaëlle Jean relinquishes the title in September at the end of her five-year term. “The Governor General’s position is largely ceremonial and I can think of no Canadian who would possibly make the most of those grandiose moments as the great William Shatner,” the page reads. Okay, that is fairly convincing, at least to the roughly 36,000 people who have become fans of the page since March 22. So far, William Shatner has just joked about the campaign on Twitter, most recently replying to his supportive friend Leonard Nimoy, “I believe Governor General means you govern the generals. Does that make me part of the army? My best, Bill.” (If Shatner were to promise to sign all official documents “My best, Bill” like he does his tweets, I could get behind this if that S— My Dad Says pilot doesn’t get picked up.)

What’s the stupidest Facebook page you’ve fan’d, friends?

R-rated movies can cause early drinking, says Science

Tom-Cruise-CocktailImage Credit: Everett CollectionMy parents did not want me to watch R movies. When my big brother watched Friday the 13th Part VI, I was forcefully ejected from the room and had to interpret the death scenes by listening through a closed door. My mother still hasn’t forgiven me for conning her into chaperoning my friends and I into a screening of Go, Doug Liman’s drugs-n’-sex youth opera. (I convinced her it was a quality film with a little help from EW’s rave review; thanks, Owen!) Turns out, my parents might have had the right idea – a new study of 3,600 middle schoolers concludes that watching R-rated films leads to underage drinking. READ FULL STORY »

Rob Lowe to guest on 'Californication': Another reason to be happy he's leaving 'Brothers & Sisters'

Rob-LoweImage Credit: John M. Heller/Getty ImagesI am already a huge fan of Rob Lowe’s post-Brothers & Sisters career. First, he booked a recurring role on NBC’s Parks and Recreation to showcase his comedic side (his first episode airs May 13, and he plays a state auditor); now, The Wrap reports he’ll guest star on the fourth season of Showtime’s Californication. He’ll play “Eddie Nero, an imbalanced yet charismatic, award-winning movie star who finds himself in contention to play Hank Moody (David Duchovny) in the film version of [F---ing & Punching].” It’s a one-episode gig that could be expanded, and I’m already confident saying it needs to be. How delicious is seeing Lowe, no stranger to a sex scandal, guest star on Californication period, let alone as an actor who could be cast as Hank in the adaptation of the book based on his dalliance with then 16-year-old Mia? I’m picturing Duchovny and Lowe (channeling his St. Elmo’s Fire and About Last Night… days) trying to out cool one another, and I like it. A lot.

Both Californication and Parks and Recreation sound so much more fun than Brothers & Sisters these days. That show is refusing to let anyone be happy for longer than 15 minutes. (Justin wants to drop out of med school and re-enlist after all the academic woes we’ve sat through this season? No.) Lowe’s lame duck Sen. McCallister just found out that he was blocked from some kind of top-secret intelligence job because another group wants him for a position that he can’t talk about. I’m still hoping he gets a dramatic death scene, as were 48 percent of readers in a recent PopWatch poll. He’s leaving the Walkers at just the right time. Run, save yourself, Rob! Go toward the light (comedy)!

Would you place bets on a videogame?

The-WizardImage Credit: Everett CollectionRemember The Wizard, the Nintendo advertisement movie starring Fred Savage and Christian Slater? Remember how that film ended with a gladiator-style Super Mario III showdown, complete with ravenous fans and a futuristic arena? Did you find yourself thinking, “This seems a bit unrealistic”? Well, think again! Today, videogames took one step closer to becoming an epic audience bloodsport, with the announcement by online bookmaker Paddy Power that they’ll be accepting bets on an upcoming Super Street Fighter IV championship.

The consensus seems to be that this is the first time a videogame competition will be opened for public betting. The players, Ryan Hart and Femi Adeboye, are apparently the two best Street Fighter players in the UK – and the betting is live! READ FULL STORY »

Snooki wastes alcohol in Miami food fight

snookieImage Credit: John Parra/WireImageI’m not a fan of food fights. But since vodka is more expensive than a pickle, I’m especially not a fan of alcohol fights. So I say “tsk, tsk” to Jersey Shore‘s own Snooki, who, according to sources who talked to People, was captured on camera throwing a drink at — and slapping — an interested male party in Miami, where season 2 is currently being filmed. (See video of the incident below; picture of Snooki not from food fight, but instead fodder for “that’s what she said” jokes in the comment section. You’re welcome.) Also: Can someone tell me whether JWOWW is wearing a black tube bikini, or is naked and being censored by a black bar? Hard to tell the difference, isn’t it?

Should every altercation end with group dancing? READ FULL STORY »

Hugh Hefner donates $900k to save Hollywood sign

hollywood-sign-hefnerImage Credit: Eichner/Retna Ltd.; Hefner: Albert L. Ortega/PR PhotosPlayboy founder (and silk pajama enthusiast) Hugh Hefner has donated $900,000 to a conservation group attempting to save the landmark Hollywood sign from being affected by a nearby development project. Hefner’s gift was the final amount of money needed for the Trust for Public Land to purchase the adjacent lot next to the sign (the total price tag was $12.5 million). Other celebrity contributors to the fund were Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg. Hefner usually prefers to invest in more youthful projects, as evidenced by watching E!’s The Girls Next Door, but that did not seem to be an issue in this decision.

Michael Trucco exclusive: Beckett's new love interest on storming ABC's 'Castle'

Categories: Castle, Television

Michael-TruccoImage Credit: Adam Taylor/ABCCastle returns with a new episode on May 3. To tide us over, we phoned Michael Trucco (Battlestar Galactica), who has the enviable/unenviable job of guest-starring as robbery detective Tom Demming, Beckett’s new love interest, for the remainder of the season before he heads to Vancouver to shoot his own series, USA’s new dramedy Facing Kate with Sarah Shahi (NBC’s Life, Showtime’s The L Word), in June. Note to future Castle guest stars: He reveals Nathan Fillion’s prank of choice.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Why did producers think you were the right man for the role?
Michael Trucco:
I wasn’t totally familiar with the show, but I know in a situation like this, the dynamic between the two leads is very important. It’s not unlike the situation when I came in to Battlestar Galactica. There’s a lot of parallels there because my character [Anders] also came in to thwart the relationship between the two leads on that show, much in the same way this one is designed to throw a wrench in the works. It’s a tightrope for a character to come into a show, especially one that has such a strong fanbase as Castle, one that is gaining such traction, one that is based heavily on the potential relationship between Castle and Beckett. So I tried to make this character really likable, really believable, so that the audience can relate to Beckett and her potential attraction. If you come off as smarmy or sleazy, you end up being the bad guy in the end, then it just feels like the audience gets cheated. So, I wanted to put a real challenge in front of the characters and say, “We kinda like this guy.” At least that’s what I’m hoping for. READ FULL STORY »

'Chuck' returns! What do you want to see by the season finale?

Categories: Chuck, Television

Chuck-and-SarahImage Credit: Jordin Althaus/NBCI am so ready for Chuck to return tonight — the weeks off have been total torture. (Ausiello recently upgraded the show’s chances of renewal to “a safe bet,” or else I’d really be in a panic.) We have six more episodes this season, including tonight’s, and I have assembled a wishlist. Here’s what I’m hoping happens before the end of the season: READ FULL STORY »
