Miranda Cosgrove: From 'iCarly' to big-screen stardom?

icarly-cosgroveImage Credit: NickelodeonJust two days after the release of her solo debut album, Sparks Fly, teen idol Miranda Cosgrove is already on her way to another showbiz milestone: her first starring role in a Hollywood movie. According to Hollywood Reporter, Paramount is developing the family comedy How Can You Do This to Me? — about a teen who tries to keep her divorced parents from getting back together — as a vehicle for the 16-year-old actress, whose Nickelodeon series iCarly has become one of cable’s biggest hits.

So can Cosgrove really make the jump from the small screen? We wouldn’t bet against it. She’s got an army of devoted fans (a January episode of iCarly drew a record 12.4 million viewers), not to mention plenty of behind-the-scenes support from media giant Viacom, which owns both Paramount and Nickelodeon (last month, Nick re-upped her contract for 26 more episodes of iCarly in a deal said to be worth $3 million). Throw in her natural on-screen charm, and you’ve got the makings of a crossover star who could join the likes of Miley Cyrus in the teen queen A-List, no bleach-blonde wig required.

But what do you think, PopWatchers? Will Cosgrove be the next minor to join Hollywood’s major league?

I’ve watched iCarly with my daughter and it is a 100 times better than Hannah Montana.

I’m 20 and I love this show. I will watch it alone or with my nephew. It is a lot more clever than hannah montana

Bingo. iCarly is the only one of these tweeny comedy-drama shows I let my daughter watch regularly under my belief that if I can’t stand to be in the same room as the show, my kids don’t need to be watching it. It seems to channel the good elements of 80s sitcoms.

Yes! She is cuter, funnier and more talented than Miley in my opinion. My kids (and I) watch iCarly all the time and they are 8 and 12 year old boys.

    • Ktct

Agreed! My boys are 7,10 and 12 and all enjoy iCarly, while loathing Miley/Hannah.

SHE WILL BE. No Doubt. Move over Meelay Cyrus, Saliva Gomeez, and Demaqua Lowvado.

Charles. why r u cracking me up….. anyways shes awesome ,shes gonna be big, I hope she does not follow a certain NICK star footsteps cough *Jamie Spears* cough

eh, it’ll just be more mediocre dreck that the majority will ignore.

Pretty sad when adults have to bag on teenagers… unless you guys are screwing around in study hall…

Anyway, I think she’ll have an easier time because she already has portrayed someone else – the little sister on Drake & Josh. Miley was stuck being Hannah (and the fact that she dealt with the dual role as part of the show, and the concerts, wasn’t helping either).

I also think iCarly is more ‘adult’ than a lot of the Disney fare – but that has always been the fundamental difference between Nick and Disney.

She was also in School of Rock w/ Jack Black.

I actually prefer Miranda as her meaner characters, like her Drake & Josh role or in School of Rock.

  • Dora

Wasn’t she in School of Rock? Or was that someone else?

    • JC

      it wuz her

I’m not sure I’ll watch this movie, but I’ve seen a few episodes of iCarly, and this kid’s pretty talented. She’s got a good career ahead of her if she’s interested.

I’ve liked her since her D&J days – so cute, funny, and more charismatic than many young TV actresses. There’s something so real about her that you don’t see in a lot of the other kid-coms (both Disney and Nickelodeon). Although the push to turn Miranda into a singer as well as an actor just seems like a ploy – like they’re priming her to take Miley’s place, and I don’t want her to be another Miley. I’m a very protective fan :)

    • lefty

They can’t be priming her to take Miley’s “place,” necessarily, because Miley is with Disney and Mirandra is with Nickelodeon.

She was totally in School of Rock–because I remember taking note of her then and recognizing her when she “become” iCarly. She was really great/memorable in that movie (for a kid actor, anyway–enough so that I took note of it)

  • Allie

she’s great! icarly is so much better than hannah montana. loved her in school of rock! when drake and josh first aired, i was thinking “oh there’s the girl from school house rock!” so yeah, she was memorable in it haha. and she actually has a good voice too.

I love iCarly. I don’t have kids, but I still watch it on my own, and it literally makes me laugh out loud. It’s hilarious.
Although, I wouldn’t say that Miranda is the strongest on the show. It works fine for the show and I let stuff slide because it’s still funny, but her acting can be pretty bad sometimes. I’m not sure she’ll translate to the big screen.

  • Lynny

She stood out as a little kid in School of Rock so we know she has some presence. I hope she will make some good choices, not just do what is easy.

  • Melinda65

What I love about Miranda Cosgrove is that she is, by all accounts, still an “average teenager.” She’s not into clubs, or being seen by the paparazzi, and hangs out with her childhood friends. We watch iCarly in our house–with a teenage daughter, we kind of have to–but my husband will watch it even if our daughter isn’t in the room, and he usually hates teen fare. (P.S. Jerry Trainor, PLEASE cut your hair!)

  • JosieG

My daughter loves iCarly and both me and her Dad enjoy it as well. It’s so much better than Hannah Montana!

  • Zero X-tream

    i never liked Hanna Montanna
I’m Pretty Sure That Miranda will do an awsome movie
